This industry had begun in Bangladesh in 1960, when a cargo vessel named M D Alpine of Greek was affected by violent storm and beached near sea shore of Fauzdarhat at Chittagong. The ship had to remain there for a long time. In 1965, the vessel was scrapped by Chittagong Steel House.
