The Soccer Mom: A Case Study on the Nervous System by Jennifer Bolognese, Misti Coronel, Anita Intorre, and Phil Stephens Biology Department Villanova University

Part I—At the Soccer Game
Thirty-two-year-old Phyllis Jackson was sitting on the bench at the side of the soccer field, sipping a bottle of Gatorade. Her husband, Steven, sat next to her with a concerned expression. “I’m really worried about you, honey,” he said. “I’m just a little dehydrated; I’ll be fine.” “If this were the first incident, then maybe I’d agree with you. But your boss has been on your case about your lack of concentration at work, you forgot to pick up the kids from school last week, and quite frankly, you haven’t exactly been yourself with me lately. Now you’re having fainting spells during games? Something doesn’t seem right.” “I know things haven’t been going well for me lately, but I don’t know why. I try so hard at work, at home, with the kids, to be a good wife. So maybe all this stress has made me a little unfocused and disoriented. What do you want me to do about it?” Phyllis said, blinking back tears. “I think you should see a doctor,” Steven replied, putting his arm around her and drawing her close. “The kids are getting worried, too.” Phyllis sighed. “Alright, if it will make you feel better. I really just think I need some time to relax, though.” “Well… I could drop the kids off at my sister’s tonight; that would give us a little free time…” “That’s really thoughtful of you. I could definitely use a quiet night at home, maybe even go to bed early.” Steven seemed disappointed.

Questions
. . . . What problems does Phyllis seem to be experiencing? Which of these problems could be caused by dehydration? Which of these problems might make you consider that there’s something more going on? Why? Suppose Phyllis does have a more serious problem. Can you think of any neurological…...

Amanda Want Help

...Amanda Wants Help NAME Axia College of University of Phoenix HCA—250 DATE Amanda Wants Help At 30, Amanda has been abusing different types of substances for about 15 years. Today, she has nicotine, alcohol, and pain medication addictions; and her habits are taking a toll on her health and lifestyle, as currently, she can neither hold a job nor pay her bills. Clearly, Amanda needs help; however, for any support system to have an effect, the addict must express a desire for changing his or her circumstances. In this case, Amanda wants help, so as part of her support system, finding the appropriate recovery program for her will be crucial. Besides the pain medication, drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes are extremely risky combination. Though it may seem impractical to quit smoking and to stop drinking at the same; Axia College (2010) states that, studies reveal that undergoing treatment for nicotine and alcohol addiction at the same time helps alcoholics to kick the smoking habit. This means that it is possible Amanda can receive treatment to address each aspect of her addiction simultaneously. Few factors that will make the recovery process more difficult for Amanda may have to do with her history with depression that may cause her to turn to alcohol and cigarettes to cope, and her current dependence on painkillers for her back injury. Not finding alternate ways to address these problems could cause her major set-backs. Substance abuse affects men......

...January 9, 1986 There was no phone, and the window to the outside was too small for anyone but a small cat or a large rat to crawl through. Slitting her fingers through the envelope and withdrawing the letter yet again, she felt her remaining hope disappear instantly. The envelope that had been left in her office mailbox was supposed to have interested her. At first she had been excited but with every reading of it from agitation gave way to despair. Amanda Hylen had been awaited for this rendezvous for months now but it appeared as though it may never happen. Amanda had never been a patient person or a very caring one either. She was best known around her office for disregarding other peoples’ opinions and rarely did she consider the impact her action might have on another person or their feelings. Behind her back, her colleagues often referred to her as being selfish, uncaring, arrogant, and unkind as well as many other names that shouldn’t be repeated. The fact that she was short and had a prosthetic leg didn’t help her temperament. Fits of rage filled with flailing arms and spit had a reputation through her office. Her chestnut hair sprinkled with golden highlights that resembling the leaves of a poplar tree in autumn allowing her turquoise eyes to look even brighter and more welcoming. Her features allowed her to conceal her true employment with almost anything while she was away. ...

...concerned with how the contractor does it, so long the outcome is achieved. Using control test from the common law, we can determine that Amanda is an employee of the company as the company control her working hours. We are concerned with the nature of the control and the degree of the control – Federal Commissioner of Taxation V J Walter Thompson (Aust) Pty Ltd (1994) Case. In Walter Thompson case, the company hired artists to perform radio plays for advertisements. The High court of Australia found that the producer controlled the actors during rehearsals and performance and held that there is an employment relationship here. Thus , we can use this case to prove that Amanda is an employee of the company. We can use the multi factor test to determine whether Amanda is the employee of the company. The multi factor test is the primary test used in Australia to identify a contract of employment and is seen in Performing Right Society V. Mitchell and Booker ( Palais de Danse (1924 ) case, where Macardie J stated :- It seems, however, reasonably clear that final test, if there be a final test, and certainly the test to be generally applied, lies in the nature and degree of detailed control over the person alleging to be a servant. This circumstance is , of course, one only of several to be considered, but is usually of vital importance. Amanda is also required to wear standard make up and dress as stipulated by the company. This condition is similar to the Hollis V.......

Letter to Amanda

...Dear Amanda, first of all, so many start-up small businesses like yours often ran in to the difficulty of mismanagement because of so many assumptions based on establishing the business mission, vision and philosophy statement; human resource management; lack of employee motivation; lack of properly defined working standards for employees and other final results measurable; not taking concern of negative information about the organization especially from the clients which costs the organization’s image and remaining too busy to pay any attention to the establishment of problem solutions, lack of fairness among employees and lack of proper follow up on the employees work. All these are consolidated in the four functions of management which are organizing, planning, controlling and directing. I acknowledge the fact that you had the right qualifications as the manager in Smith accounting and Tax service business, and I noticed that you also had a good start as you identified, an opportunity to expand your business and did just like that (Gronkiewicz, & Churchill, 2006). Your work is noteworthy. However, the most important part of overseeing the business is what you put aside with the objective of acquiring more clients and shuffle more rejoinder. Now Amanda, planning is quite important for any business large or small. This is because all other functions associated with management fall under planning and lack of planning is planning to fail (Guzzle, 2011). On one......

Ultilitarianism

...instead treats people as an end in themselves. Part II: These ethical theories played a role in analyzing the decision making of characters, Patrick (Casey Affleck), and Captain Jack Doyle (Morgan Freeman) in the film Gone, Baby Gone. The case of Amanda McCready grew complicated as Patrick discovered that Captain Jack Doyle had kidnapped her, with the help of the uncle, because they felt that Amanda's mother was neglecting her child. It was here that Patrick had to decide whether to let Amanda live this alter life with Captain Jack Doyle, where she would have sleepovers, play dates and grow up in a traditional american home, or to report his findings to the authorities. Ultimately, Patrick reported the kidnapping and Amanda was returned home to live a neglected life under the care of her mother and Captain Jack Doyle was to receive the wrath of the authorities. Captain Jack Doyle ethical beliefs reflect those of a utilitarian. “When the lights go out and you ask yourself,'Is she better off here or better off there,' you know the answer.” Consequentialism plays a role in evaluating this quote. Whether the kidnapping is right or wrong is determined by the value of consequences that arise in the given situation. Kidnapping Amanda was not wrong because he was saving her from a life that was hurting her. “I did what I did for the sake of the child. All right. For me, too. But now, I'm asking you for the sake of the child. I'm begging you. You think about it.” Doyle is......

English - a Short Essay.

...foolishness. And that's exactly what happened for Amanda Lindhout and her ex-boyfriend Nigel Brennan. Amanda Lindhout wasn't afraid at all when she went down to Somalia. She and Nigel Brennan even gave up their two armed guards. And that is exactly what is described as foolishness in the book review. Amanda Lindhout also admits her mistakes. She admits her foolishness. And that again is, by my opinion, the overall topic. To pay an extremely high price if you don't use the better half of your brain. What views are presented in the article? The views presented in the article are, from Amanda Lindhout's point of view, about forgiving. Even though that the captors locked her up in chains for several months and gangbanged her several times, she still strived to forgive them. She knows about her mistakes and foolishness, and believes that she was the one at fault. Nigel Brennan's point of view in this matter is first of all, that he had blamed Amanda Lindhout for their kidnap. Second is that he was treated much better than her. He was sitting on a madras bathing in sunlight with a drink. And probably at the same time Amanda Lindhout was gangbanged. So he had it quite nice compared to her. By this we can tell that Nigel Brennan hadn't felt true terror as Amanda Lindhout did, and must have had a quit different overall view. But even in spite of the fact that he wasn't tortured, he must in some way have felt sorrowful by Amanda Lindhout's painful screams. Do you......

Mama in Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” and Amanda in Tennessee Williams “The Glass Menagerie” have some comparisons and difference. Mama and Amanda both live in modest homes. Mama’s house, “It is three rooms, just like the one that burned, except the rood is tin; they don’t make shingle roofs any more. There are no real windows, just some holes cut in the sides, like the portholes in a ship, but not round and not square, with rawhide holding the shutters up on the outside” (Walker 71). Amanda’s house, her front porch is a fire escape, so her house isn’t really that nice either (Williams 991). Also both Mama and Amanda are single mothers with two children. Both of their husbands left them with no say. Mama’s husband really doesn’t say why he left. But Amanda’s husband left with a phone call: TOM. This is our father who left us a long time ago. At dinner she tells her daughter, Laura, to stay nice and pretty for her gentlemen callers even though Laura has never had any callers and expects none. Amanda remembers the time that she had seventeen gentlemen callers all on one Sunday afternoon. Amanda then tells Laura to practice her shorthand and typing. A few days later Amanda comes home from Laura's school after finding out that Laura had dropped out several months earlier. Amanda is shocked and wonders what they will do with their lives since Laura refuses to try to help and spends all her time playing with her glass menagerie and her old phonograph records. Amanda decides that they must have a gentleman caller for Laura, and Laura tells her that she has liked only one boy in her whole life, a high school boy named Jim. When Tom goes out to the movies that night, Amanda accuses him of doing something else rather than going to the movies every night. They have an argument, and the next morning after Tom apologizes, Amanda asks him to find some nice gentleman caller for Laura and to bring him home for dinner. A few days later, Tom tells Amanda that he has invited a young man named Jim O'Connor home for dinner. Amanda immediately begins to make rather elaborate plans for the gentleman caller. On the next night, Amanda oversees Laura's dress and adds some "gay deceivers" to the dress......
