1. What is nutrition? Why is nutrition essential to our daily lives? | Nutrition is the selection of foods and preparation of foods, and their ingestion to be assimilated by the body. Nutrition is important because it fuels your body and gives you chemical building blocks like amino acids for making protein and calcium and magnesium for building bones and teeth. It provides fatty acids for building the membranes of cells and their components. |

2. What is the connection between nutrition and health? | A balanced mixture of foods can usually offer all the health and nutrition necessary to excel at most daily activities. Daily needs for most everyone include four or more servings of fruits and vegetables, three or more servings of protein, and four or more servings of breads and cereal. |

3. What are the six classes of nutrients? What are essential nutrients? What are the sources of nutrients? What do nutrients do? | Water- Water accounts for as much as 60 percent of the human bodyCarbohydrates- They're your body's main fuel source, especially for your brain, kidneys and muscles. Your body breaks carbs down to glucose, deriving 4 calories of energy from each gram. Protein- Your body needs proteins to grow normally, maintain or repair tissues, make hormones and enzymes, help your body fight disease and preserve your muscle mass. Fats- Your body needs some fat in order to grow and function normally. The living organism needs energy to function continuously; this energy is derived from food with the help of enzymes that break it down into nutrients. Body cells depend on insulin to get the needed glucose for energy. Insulin deficiency leads to glucose build up in the blood stream leading to organ failure.
