What do you think of this research suggestion?
I believe that the research suggestion is a little vague. There could have been a lot of reasons as to why the sales of beef went down. Sale of beef could be down due to the fear of E coli which is one way of think, or maybe people in the area just wanted to eat better or healthier. That could have also affected the sale of beef. Sales could have also dwindled due cheaper prices in fish, chicken and tofu or waitress not recommending beef, which might have led people to cut down on their consumption of beef products. I think that the manager jumped to an early conclusion when there might have been several other factors that contributed to the reduction in sales. As it is stated in the text, business research is a systematic inquiry that provides information to guide managerial decisions (Cooper, & Schindler, 2011). More planning, acquiring, analyzing, and disseminating of data should have been done first.
How, if at all, could you improve on your boss’s formulating of the research question?
In order to improve my bosses’ formulation two things could have been done. One is to create a model and the second is to do a survey asking customers why they are buying less beer products. As stated in our text, a model purpose is to increase our understanding, prediction, and control of the complexities of the environment (Cooper &Schindler, 2011). With these in place, the manager would have been able to have a stronger and more accurate research questin.

...Written Assignment Week 2 Yolanda Kounkou BUS 642 Alston Mason September 10, 2012 Distinguish between the following exploratory and formal studies. Exploration helps when researchers lack a clear idea of problems they will meet during the study. With exploration researchers develop concepts more clearly, establish priorities, develop operational definitions and improve the final research design. Exploratory studies tend toward loose structures with the objective of discovering future research tasks. The purpose of exploration is usually to develop hypotheses or questions for further research. The formal study begins where the exploration leaves off it begins with a hypothesis or research question and involves precise procedures and data source specifications (Cooper, Schindler). Experimental and ex-post facto research design. In an experiment researchers attempt to control or manipulate the variables in the study. Experimental design is appropriate when one wishes to discover if certain variables produce effects in other variables. Experimentation provides the most powerful support possible for a hypothesis of causation. With an ex-post facto design investigators have no control over the variables in the sense of being able to manipulate them. They can report only what has happened or what is happening it is important for researchers using this design not influence the variables to do so introduces bias. There research is limited to holding......

...Discussion Questions Timothy Vallin BUS 642 Business Research Methods & Tools Instructor: Donald Platine August 19, 2012 Discussion Questions 1. What is business research? Business research is a systematic inquiry that provides information to guide managerial decisions. It is also a process of planning, acquiring, analyzing, and disseminating relevant data, information, and insights to decision makers in ways that mobilize the organization to take appropriate actions that, in turn, maximize performance (Cooper & Schindler, 2011). Why should there be any questions about the definition of research? There is a variety of a different type of research projects grouped under the label “business research”. The definition of research is not a simple standard that is the same for every individual. It is based on the person that is conducting the research. It has to be defined so that everyone understands what they are doing when they hear the word research. This is due to it having such a broad definition with many different meanings. 2. What is the difference between applied research and basic or pure research? Applied research has a practical problem-solving emphasis. Pure research or basic research aims to solve perplexing questions or obtain new knowledge of an experimental or theoretical nature that has little direct or immediate impact on action, performance, or policy decisions. Even though both forms of research are problem-solving based,......

...Cost Improvement Timothy Vallin BUS 642 Business Research Methods & Tools Instructor: Donald Platine September 24, 2012 Introduction In this study, we will be focusing on restructuring and how it relates to cost improvement. This information has been investigated in order to gain a good knowledge on the importance of restructuring. In order to test this theory, I used random sampling of 20 different data reports relate to the issues that the company faces concerning expenditures, labor and necessary spending. Each month every section of the company has a major meeting and part of the meeting is to discuss the financial reports of the company. Many companies may not find this to be important but it is necessary for our company to do this to track spending. Companies typically do not discuss financials with everyone but they do with us because everyone is given a credit card and a budget for their particular section. We are able to access the other part of company’s financial documents if we want to use them as a tool to improve our budgets. What prompted me to do this is I started working for the company in the year of 2011. After working 5 months for the company, the employees received a letter stating that there will be pay cuts due to the government cutting funding for the program that we are in. There were many complaints from employees who have been there for many years. The employees complained stating that they were told the last pay cut they received would...

(Exercise 1-9) Zoya Arbiser, regional manager of Gold Medal Sports Shops, is reviewing the results of 15 stores in her region. Store managers are moved annually. Each store manager’s income is very dependent on the direct contribution margin of that store. For the past year, Store 9 has been managed by a person who has operated several other profitable stores in recent years and is about to be promoted to a larger store. Zoya notices several items that bother her. Store 9 has almost no personnel training expenses relative to other stores. Store 9 has stopped participating in numerous community events that gave the store significant visibility but did incur substantial expenses. Store 6, where this store manager worked the prior year, has had a severe drop in profits due to higher operating expenses. The advertising budget was spent almost entirely in the first four months of the year, with almost nothing spent in the last several months. Discuss a possible negative managerial scenario that the regional manager may be......
