When working in the global commercial environment, you need to consider the cultural mandates of each country in which you do business, and you will also need to ensure you obey both local and international laws. Knowledge of the impact of cultural differences is one of the keys to international business success. Improving levels of cultural awareness can help companies build international competencies and enable individuals to become more globally sensitive to the social norms of different countries. Cultures vary widely from country to country, and what might seem polite in the United States can be rude and unprofessional in another location. In some countries, for example, in China you'll be expected to dress very formally and be highly direct. In others, however, small talk, getting to know your client and frequent informal business meetings are the norm. Doing business always involves meeting and greeting people. In China, meetings start with the shaking of hands and a slight nod of the head. Usually clients aren’t overly vigorous when shaking hands, the Chinese may interpret this as aggressive. The Chinese are not keen on physical contact, the only circumstance in which it may take place is when a host is guiding a guest. Even then contact will only be made by holding a cuff or sleeve. Also, it is not wise to slap, pat, or put your arm around someone's shoulders. The giving of gifts does not carry any negative connotations when doing business in China, business gifts are always reciprocated. Cross cultural understanding is an important tool for any international business person, company or organization to acquire when doing business abroad. ...Like it or not, we are connected with each other in many ways. Seeing our country progress economically is not the only basis for development. We need to educate every Filipino people. We need to increase employment rate. We need to lessen poverty rate. We need to raise the level of awareness during calamities, and urgently need to address issues in our government to gain trust from Filipinos. Taxes straight to pockets of greedy officials is discouraging magnified by the pork barrel scam the country is facing now. What is more heart breaking is that the empire of pork barrel scam is made possible by private individuals. Thus, rather than paying correct taxes for the development of the country, businessmen would opted to help in their own little ways. On the lighter note, according to anti-graft organization Transparency International's 2012 Corruption Perception Index (CPI), “The Philippines' ranking in the list of the most corrupt countries improved this year. While the country's ranking has improved, its actual CPI score shows the level of perceived corruption is still significant. The Philippines' CPI score was 34 out of 100, still among the lowest”. It seems that Western culture has picked up on more civilized methods, whereas 3rd world countries rely on much more barbaric practices. One of the biggest questions in today’s society is “Who is to say what proper punishment for wrong doers is”? How can you measure what is cruel and what is proper when each country has a very different view. After taking a closer look into United States punishment for crime and other countries punishment, we can decide which is humane and which is truly cruel. It is true that most look down on the practices used by countries such as Pakistan, which still uses the method of flogging lawbreakers in public. It is not only a form of punishment for the lawbreakers but also a mass form of entertainment for the thousands of law-abiding Pakistanis.
