September16, 2013 Unions were created in America after the Declaration of Independence was written by many of the skilled craftsmen whom fashioned guilds; these craftsmen formed these guilds in groups of persons who had the skill set to protect their common interests. For instance as the Industrial Revolution begin in America, the basis for the modern unions arose, “to counter balance the wealth and power of a very few industrialists, as well as to battle the widespread poverty, misery and abuse of most workers,” ("Brief History," 2010, para. 7).
There are distinctive types of unions in America all with diverse types of participants. Several of the most common unions currently are Craft (Trade) Unions, and Industrial Unions Craft Unions which are the long-standing types of unions, their beginnings are formed from the skilled workers guilds. These types of unions are comprised of workers from many different trades; the typical union helps their members by bargaining and negotiating with employer on their behalf with regards to labor contracts which comprise of benefits, wages, working conditions, procedures for termination, or complaints. Trade Unions traditionally are diplomatically conventional when associated to other Unions. “US trade unions have been the most "successful" labor movement in the world. Unions won for their members benefits such as pensions, health care, and paid vacations that working people in other industrial countries were able to win only through political as well as industrial action. US trade unionists also enjoy the highest wage premium in any country that is, the difference in pay and benefits between organized and unorganized workers in the same sector,” (Bernard, 1998, para. 9).…...

Changing Landscape of Unions

...Changing Landscape of Unions Unions have been defined as organizations based on collective self interest that focuses on issues relative to work and seeks to bargain on behalf of a group of workers to improve their living and working conditions (Fletcher, B. 2012). In the past century, evolvement of unions has been in part, the passage of much legislation governing union activities and collective bargaining including the Norris La Guardia Anti Injunction Act, the National Labor Relations Act and the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosures Act to name a few. Prior to the 1930’s, these labor laws were not in place and conspiracy doctrine and injunctions were used in attempts to deplete union strength including in house spies, yellow dog contracts and company lockouts. In current times, while union philosophy still parallels with the definition above; union strength faces many challenges. There is a need for unions to adapt to the many external factors affecting the workforce such as technological advances replacing workers and the affects of globalization on our domestic workforce. This evolvement needs to include a reinvention of objectives and possible reforms in order to broaden the appeal of union membership in today’s workforce. The last century has seen the labor union go through periods of growth and decline for many reasons stemming mainly from the nature of the economic state of the country. When the economy is good, there is more bargaining power in......

Week Two Assignment

...Week 2 Assignment 2 Learning styles and competencies The learning styles and competencies outlined by Merlette in chapter two of Keys to Effective Learning are a way to help distinguish what kind of learning style fits you best. The results I got from these exercises were very surprising. I thought I was going to end up a bodily kinesthetic learner, but after completing the exercises, I found that you are not limited to only one learning style. In fact, according to Howard Gardner, everyone has eight different intelligences. Depending on the person, some of these intelligences are more developed than others. Finding a solid way to study and to do whatever works best for you is key to being effective at learning. After doing the exercises and reading chapter 2, I found that the best way for me to be effective at studying is to stay active. When I am doing school work at home I try to take a break every 30 minutes. Doing this helps me stay focused and not zone out. When I study I like to make flash cards and look at them while I walk my dog. Doing these things makes it easier for me to retain information as a kinesthetic learner. Knowing your abilities and competencies is essential to being proficient in anything you choose to do. If you know your abilities and competencies, you can work on them and practice different exercises to make them further developed. Doing this will help you in a professional environment because if you have confidence and you know what your......

Health Care: Changing Landscape

...Changing Landscape of Health Care Review February 2, 2015 HCS/490 Review This week in review it is very apparent that health care is always changing, but with recent advances in technology health and government regulation health care is moving from a business to business model to a business to consumer model. This means that health care is shifting from a provider controlled model to a consumer empowered model. Empowering the consumer to take charge of their health care needs gives the consumer control over their health care costs and management. Government regulation such as the Affordable Care Act has placed the responsibility on the consumer for their health care instead of the provider. This move has presented challenges for the health care industry. These challenges call for the health care industry to make changes that educate the consumer, change marketing strategies, add innovative ways to help the consumer become empowered, reform the way health care is delivered, and train staff to meet these challenges with innovative ideas. To address the challenges presented from this changing market the health care industry has undergone a massive restructuring in the way of how health care conducts business (Berkowitz, 2011). One of the major problems with empowering the consumer is that the consumer does not fully understand the coverage plans and real costs associated with health care like the provider does. The consumer must also understand that coverage and costs......

Changing Landscape of Healthcare

...Changing Landscape of Healthcare HCS 490 The healthcare landscape is always changing as organizations develop new techniques and processes in response to the challenges they face on a daily basis. For example, with the new law that President Obama signed, the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama Care, made a huge change to health care reforms. This new law gave citizens healthcare regardless of pre-existing conditions or income. The Obama Care does create shifts and challenges in the healthcare landscape. Obama Care does have its benefits. People with pre-existing conditions can now have insurance without being turned down because of condition, this includes children as well. Young adults can now stay on their parents insurance up to the age of 26 and applications cannot be denied like in the past because of errors made on the application. Obama Care also covers services without co-pays, like mammograms and colonoscopies or other preventive test. Individuals and families will pay insurance based on their income, if you don’t have insurance by March of 2015 you will be fined. Even though people will get coverage with pre-existing conditions, this allows insurance companies to raise their rates. The insurance can’t cancel you because you are sick, but citizens do have the right to appeal a health insurance company if the citizen does not agree with a health care plan (Obama 2014). One of the biggest challenges of the new reform will be Integrated Health Care......

I would then investigate the rumors further to verify if they are true or false. During the investigation I would gather information from the employees and look into the information to make sure that I have enough evidence to back up my findings. My next step would be to speak with upper management about what I have discovered. I would show them the evidence I have collected and discuss possible solutions with them. I would offer to speak with the employees to find out what they are feeling, what it would take to change their feelings, and ask what part or parts of the process they would like to see change. Changing Landscape of Health Care

...Changing Landscape of Health Care: Week One Changing Landscape of Health Care: Week One Health care is making major changes. One of these major changes is pushes for preventative care versus acute care. Many facilities are faced with debilitating diseases becoming a normal occurrence amongst their patients. By promoting preventative care, diseases like obesity and diabetes could potentially be avoided, delayed, or better managed. This shift towards preventative care could also reduce the amount of long term spending a patient might be subjected to. Challenges for Health Care Systems The current and continuing problems would be chronic diseases. “Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are responsible for 7 of every 10 deaths among Americans each year and account for 75% of the nation’s health spending. These chronic diseases can be largely preventable through close partnership with your healthcare team, or can be detected through appropriate screenings, when treatment works best.”(CDCP, 2013). Diseases such as cancer can be detected early to reduce the likelihood of complications with the disease. The main challenges is getting patients to participate in preventative programs. These programs can sometimes come off as expensive to some individuals, or they may feel that they don’t have the time. Whatever the case may be. Not enough Americans are using the preventative programs that are readily available to them. Many individuals often don’t......

...XECO212: Principles of Economics Week Two Assignment Supply and Demand Paper Deborah Johnson 03/18/2012 Angela Rogers Assignment: Supply and Demand Paper For this assignment I am to chose a good that I have had experienced purchasing. This is a tough assignment has I have not had the pleasure of purchasing any of these goods. What I can do however is pick one of these goods and complete this assignment as best as I can. The topic I chose is other. I wanted to use purchasing a new home as this is something I have always dreamed of doing but having 12 children the possibility of owning my own home someday is slim to none. Now when I look at purchasing a new home a factor I see that could possibly affect supply and demand would be economy. I mean without the economy how will people be able to afford buying a home? Home purchases require a lot of money. Without the income a person can fall into major debt. There are many financial factors to consider such as the asking price, the monthly mortgage fees, closing costs, homeownership expenses, insurance, and additional income for routine maintenance costs or major repairs/replacements. When the economy is stable people tend to make more money and therefore the demand for houses increase. When the economy is unstable or low the demand for houses decrease. The reason this factor can affect supply and demand is because when the demand for homes increase the price for homes increase as well. This is due to having more......
