1. Ch. 17/7 – You conduct a survey of a sample of 25 members of this year’s graduating marketing students and find that the average GPA is 3.2. The standard deviation of the sample is 0.4. Over the last 10 years, the average GPA has been 3.0. Is the GPA of this year’s students significantly different from the long-run average? At what alpha level would it be significant?
Null hypothesis H0: µ=3.0
Alternative hypothesis H1: µ≠3.0
Given the sample mean xbar=3.2, sample standard deviation s=0.4 and sample size n=25. We can use t-test.
The test statistic can be computed as follows:
T=(xbar-3.0)/s*sqrt(n)
=(3.2-3.0)/0.4*sqrt(25)
=0.2/0.4*5=2.5
Note that the degree of freedom df=25-1=24. So, we can get p-value=P(T>2.5)
=0.0197
So, if we use significance level alpha = 0.02, then since p-value=0.0197<alpha=0.02, we should reject Null hypothesis H0.
Hence, at a 0.02 significance level, we conclude that the GPA of this year’s students is significantly different from the long-run average.

2. Ch. 17/9 – You contact a random sample of 36 graduates of Western University and learn that their starting salaries averaged $28,000 last year. You then contact a random sample of 40 graduates from Eastern University and find that their average starting salary was $28,800. In each case, the standard deviation of the sample was $1,000. a. Test the null hypothesis that there is no difference between average salaries received by the graduates of the two schools.
TO determine if there is a significant difference between the average salaries received by graduates of the two schools; you would use the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis, which forms the basis for a test of hypothesis inference. The alternative hypothesis will take the form of a two tailed test with alpha = 0.05. This means that we are 95% confident that we will make the correct inference…...

Healthcare Finance Chapter 17 Problems

...Financial Condition Analysis Chapter 17 ANSWERS TO END-OF-CHAPTER QUESTIONS 17.1 a. Financial statement analysis, which focuses on the data contained in a business’s financial statements, is designed to assess the financial condition of the business. Operating indicator analysis, which focuses on operating (as opposed to financial) variables, attempts to identify the underlying operating parameters that contributed to the assessed financial condition. b. Of course, it is extremely important to understand a business’s financial condition, because any future plans must be supported financially. However, it is equally important, especially for managers, to understand what operational actions are required to ensure that the business maintains the financial condition needed to accomplish its mission. 17.2 Analyses that examine historical data provide managers and investors with an appreciation of the business’s current condition, which is important. However, the future is more important than the past, and the most important use of a historical analysis is as a springboard for preparing for the future. When plans are being made, pro forma (forecasted) financial statements are prepared and analyzed, so that managers can gain insights regarding the impact of alternative strategies on the business’s financial and operating condition. 17.3 The inventory turnover ratio indicates how well a business is utilizing its inventories. It tells managers how many dollars of......

Cost Accounting Chapter 17 Notes

...Chapter 17 Process Costing ➢ Process Costing – the method of assigning total cost to many identical or similar units. Each unit receives the same or similar amounts of direct material costs, direct labor costs, and indirect manufacturing costs. Unit costs are computed by dividing total costs incurred by the number of units of output from the production process. The main difference between process costing and job costing is the extend of averaging used to compute unit costs of products or services. o Focus on individual units o Focus on cost components (Beginning WIP and Currently added. o Focus on when costs are introduced into the process. o Focus on beginning and ending inventories and percentage of completion. o This system in the assembly department has a single direct-cost category (DM), and a single indirect-cost category (conversion costs: DL and MOH). Assuming that we only use direct materials are added at one time and conversion costs are added evenly after that ➢ Equivalent Units of Production (EUP) – a derived amount of output units that (1) takes the quantity of each input (factor of production) in units completed and in incomplete units of work in process and (2) converts the quantity of input into the amount of completed output units that could be produced with that quantity of input. EUP is calculated separately for each input (DM, DL or MOH (CC). Ex: If 50 physical units......

Chapter 17 Primary Source 1

...Industrial Supremacy Primary Source #1 ← Refer back to the section of the chapter under the heading "Capitalism and its Critics." The great industrialist Andrew Carnegie built his fortune on steel, but he also built a lasting reputation as a philanthropist because he spent millions of dollars on the establishment of libraries. Carnegie's Gospel of Wealth was a call for other rich people to share their wealth with the worthy poor. Consider the following questions: How does Carnegie's view exemplify Social Darwinism? What is the essence of Carnegie's argument against socialism? On what social values and assumptions about human nature was the gospel of wealth based? The price which society pays for the law of competition, like the price it pays for cheap comforts and luxuries, is also great; but the advantages of this law are also greater still, for it is to this law that we owe our wonderful material development, which brings improved conditions in its train. But, whether the law be benign or not, we must say of it, as we say of the change in the conditions of men to which we have referred: It is here; we cannot evade it; no substitutes for it have been found; and while the law may be sometimes hard for the individual, it is best for the race, because it insures the survival of the fittest in every department. We accept and welcome, therefore, as conditions to which we must accommodate ourselves, great inequality of environment, the concentration of business,......
