...WK 9 Expository Essay Final Project Bridget Sherman COM/150 September 9, 2012 Elliot Courtright Social Networks and Teens Essay As a single parent with a pre-teen, it is often hard to make the right decisions in knowing how to keep them safe. It is the hope that the information provided in this paper, will inform the reader of the pros and cons of what it is to have a teen using a social network. As parents, it is a never-ending duty to ensure the safety of the lives that have been given to them as parents. One must ask themselves is this environment a safe place to be in and who will their teen be interacting with. Frequently children in 4th-6th grade levels engage in social networking activities. In the process they post personal, potentially exploitable, information about themselves online. (Social Networking Statistics, 2012) Social networking sites provide many opportunities for adults, but leave adolescents vulnerable to predators, addiction, and lack of social interaction. The beginning of social networking started with a site call BBS (Bulletin Board System). This was a site that allowed user to use text only exchange. This was a popular thing in the 1980s and late 1990s. (Nickson, 2009) The Internet was still new at this stage and did not catch on until AOL (America Online) ventured around in the mid-1990s. Soon sites such as Yahoo and Amazon came alone catching the eyes of the young generation. In August......

...Secondhand Smoke: How it Affects the Health of Others Stephen E. Smith IRN 9047136049 COM/150 02/10/2013 Tracey Fida Smoking cigarettes is a habit many people have these days, and fortunately those numbers are going down. If compared with the 1940’s, the number of smokers had a huge decrease nowadays. Mendes  (2011), “Gallup and Healthways find the national smoking rate stuck at 21%. Although this is much lower than the historic highs of around 40%, Gallup found from the mid-1940s to the mid-1970s, there remains significant variation across states, with smoking levels in many states still at 25% or higher. The number of Americans who smoke has fallen to 20 percent, tying the all-time low first recorded in 2009.” (8). However, the health problems it brings to the smokers and their surroundings still a big concern and something people need to learn more about. Unfortunately, what some non-smoker does not realize is how bad that smoke is for them as it is for the smoker, the reason they are known as involuntary or passive smokers once they are breathing in the second hand smoke taking in the nicotine and toxic chemicals the same way smokers do. When a non-smoker sees somebody smoking a cigarette the first thing that crosses their minds is how bad that habit is, not juts because the harmful effects it causes to the smoker's health, but the odor impregnated in the clothes, the bad breath,......

...None Coms 2 Professor Reams 2/7/2013 Reading Response for Chapters 1-2 The one concept that I feel that I can apply best to my life is what Wayne Brockriede describes some arguers as rapist, seducer, and lover. In my own words rapist arguers are just people who attack and do not let people get their words out or their point across. These kinds of arguers are people who feel that what they are saying is right and cannot be wrong no matter what. The seducer is someone similar to the rapist but just in a smoother, sneakier way. He will listen to your side but he will not take it into consideration. The rapist is more about power than about reasoning. The seducer wants you to see things his way and he will do that by trying to sweet talk you or seeming to be extremely nice. His tactics are the same as the rapist but just are delivered differently. The seducer is about power but not as much as the rapist. Now the lover, he is absolutely different from the rapist and the seducer. The lover wants your opinion and will actually make it into consideration. The lover considers you as an equal and not as someone who is lesser than he is. They do not mind their views being changed unlike the rapist and the seducer. The lover is all about sharing the power; he is all about equality in arguing. I have experience this when my friends and I argue about something. We all have been the rapist, the seducer, and the lover in are arguments. We argue about everything and anything every day.......

...Social Security and Retirement Erin Darby COM172 June 7, 2011 Louise Gerdes Social Security and Retirement In the United States, Americans need to plan for retirement. Social Security will not cover people’s needs when retiring. Americans who retire should use savings based on their personal investments, private savings accounts, employer’s pensions such as 401K, and Social Security so that they can live the rest of their lives comfortably. Americans that retire can receive full Social Security benefits depending on their year of birth. For example, baby boomers have the retirement age increased to age 67 for those born after 1960. The generation of baby boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y should be concerned that Social Security benefits will be exhausted when reaching the age of retirement. Without Social Security, what security do Americans really have? Americans should not depend on Social Security for early retirement for several reasons. The Social Security benefit amount might be less than what retirement recipients need, the retirement benefits might disqualify them from receiving full Social Security benefits, or the benefits may no longer be available. One reason Americans should not depend on Social Security is that the benefit amount might be less than what Social Security retirement recipients need. Some workers who have contributed to their Social Security could possibly fall into poverty. According to Laura Sullivan (2008), “future......

...Individuals without health insurance coverage have a harder time keeping up with their health, as opposed to individuals with insurance coverage. Americans’ without healthcare coverage have a harder time living happier productive lives than those who do have healthcare. Most American’s main reason for not having healthcare insurance is because they cannot afford the skyrocketing premiums. Approximately 47 million American’s are living without health insurance because they do not have extra expendable income at the end of each month. Congress created the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in order to increase the number of American citizens covered by health insurance companies and decrease the cost of the rising healthcare system. According to the New York Times health insurance has gone up over the last decade by 15 percent since 2001. Some health insurance companies jack up the cost of healthcare because they dominate the healthcare market within their respective state. This simply provides for an unfair market because it leaves consumers only having to deal with the one Healthcare Insurance Company or not having healthcare insurance. Some insurance companies will only cover part of the doctor’s visit or emergency room visit and still require you to pay a co-pay making it harder to keep your insurance while paying for your regularly monthly expenses. According to the International Federation of Health Plans, the average routine......

...Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder Stephanie Feeser COM/155F3 August 25, 2013 Judith Rottsolk Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder Not every disability is visible by looking at a person. Imagine living in a world surrounded by many people yet feeling alone, flawed, damaged, and unable to function in society. A patient suffering from mental illness can have these feelings every day. Education is the key to understanding mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Even though Schizophrenia and BPD share similar symptoms, they are often confused and misunderstood. There are a large number of similarities between BPD and Schizophrenia. Studies have shown that there is a genetic link with both mental illnesses. Childhood trauma, such as physical, sexual, and mental abuse, is a common history for patients with these diagnoses. Neglect of a child has negative effects that last a lifetime. The neglect causes symptoms such as inappropriate mood control, fear of abandonment, and attachment issues. No matter the history, whether it is genetics or abuse, facts show mental illness is prevalent. People who suffer from mental illness have a hard time functioning daily. Individuals with mental illnesses suffer from poor self-esteem and isolate themselves when they are in crises. Patients with these illnesses have contemplated, attempted or were successful with committing suicide. One in ten...

...Final Essay Katie Beauchamp COM/155 June 16, 2013 Dr. Andrews Many people know someone who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. It is confusing how some people use these names interchangeably. While Alzheimer’s disease and dementia have similar characteristics, the treatment for the disease is based on symptoms as well as how the diseases are acquired. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia so they are very closely related. (Fraller, 2013) Knowing the slight differences between the two diseases could, in some cases, mean a cure. Both Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are caused by a dysfunction in the brain. In Alzheimer’s disease, there is a loss of brain cells brought on by age. Studies have shown that 10% of all people over the age of 65 and 50% of people over the age of 85 have Alzheimer’s. Out of all those people, only 1% of them inherited the disease. Someone who has experienced multiple head injuries or high insulin levels are also at a greater risk of acquiring Alzheimer’s. On the other hand, dementia is caused by changes to the brain. These changes may be caused by a stroke, brain tumors, or even head injuries. Diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, hyperthyroidism, B12 deficiency, and fluid build-up on the brain have also been known to cause dementia. (Healthwise Incorporated, 2011) Once the causes of the two diseases have been determined, it is important to discuss the symptoms. The similarities between the symptoms of Alzheimer’s......

...Even though credit cards can be a source of paying for college-related expenses; credit card companies should not be on college campuses because most students will misuse the credit card, go into credit card debt and not realize the full financial hole they are in and struggle for years to pay off the debt. The first reason why credit card companies should not be on colleges marketing to college students is that it is very easy for a college student to misuse the new credit card. A college student most likely has limited financial means and a credit card could help today but hurt substantially more down the road. With a limited income, it would be very easy for the student to become financially dependent on the card. A 2009 Survey by Sallie Mae concluded the following. “The economic downturn has most Americans tightening their spending habits, but not all. College students are even more dependent upon credit cards, according to a survey conducted by Sallie Mae, the nation’s leading provider of student loans. The organization released its survey results last week in its National Study of Usage Rates and Trends. The study focused on undergraduate student’s ages 18 to 24 who were enrolled in public and private four-year colleges and universities during the spring of 2008.” [ (Phan, 2009) ] Another misuse of credit card spending occurs when the student is trying to fit into a social crowd among its peers. Many students feel a need to be part of socially acceptable “cool” crowd...

...Although of The Twilight Saga books are fictional with a mystical story line; these books will be remember for many years. The Twilight Saga has become so surprisingly popluar in the past two to three years. Reminding all of us of the Harry Potter novels. Though both groups of books targeted different age groups; the overwhelming popularity reached out to all age groups. Including children, teenagers, young adults, and grown adults. I look back to my childhood, and the books that were popular then were part of the bubble gum culture of the 1980's. When my children are adults, they will remember the Twilight Saga, and even Harry Potter. Then relate those types of books to their childhood. Which does a have different type of culture. I call it the fantasy and reality culture. I am positive there is a more specific name for it, but in my mind everything in today's media culture is either reality based, or fantasy based. Yes both are far from each other, but when one does not want to live reality, they are most likely to chose fantasy. I think that is why Twilight Saga and Harry Potter books have become so vastly popular. The only issues I can see coming from the fantasy part is the need for children to know how to decipher the difference between reality and fantasy. If this is not done, then there could possibly be all different types of issues for the children readers when they become adults....

...This essay will discuss how my use of online information has grown from being merely a consumer, to now being able to critically evaluate online sources for credibility and suitability for use in academic work. My role in producing an online informational resource has been enhanced by both the readings, and the experience gained in the collaborative process involved in working as a team. This is my first experience at online collaboration and I will examine the challenges encountered using this medium of communication, how I dealt with them, the lessons learned, and what I would do differently during future collaborative work. Before this course, my experience with online sources of information had been limited to an observer status, and although I had read from a variety of sources online, and considered myself capable of sorting truth from fiction, I had never realised the extent to which information can and should be evaluated. A study conducted by Scholz-Crane 1998 (cited in Metzger, 2007, pp. 2080-2081) explains that a lax attitude toward proving the accuracy and credibility of websites is prevalent among college students. This information has encouraged me to be more critical in regard to information found on the web, and I now apply the criteria espoused by Tate, (2010, pp. 35-36) of checking for accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency and coverage. According to Treise et al (2003, cited in Cronin, 2007) sites in the .gov domain are considered more credible than......
