Successful Learning

...Successful Learning To be successful, a student learner must know so much more than the topic they are studying. The first thing they need to know is what type of learner they are and the best strategies to use for their learning style. Next, they need to be aware of what types of learning resources are available to them. Once they know what is available, they need to know where (i.e. library or internet) and how to find it. Once they have found the information they are looking for, they must know how to evaluate the information for accuracy and reliability. Finally, they need to be able to use the information correctly and effectively. There are resources available today that provide a wide array of opportunities for learning. The most important being the internet, which makes almost anything available to anyone at any time. The variety and amount of information available on the internet can be extremely daunting to any learner particularly to a scholarly student conducting academic research. Students in an online learning environment expect to be able to complete all of their course requirements using only online resources. This is not easy to do unless the student knows how to navigate search engines, virtual libraries, and digital databases. Students should be able to find the information they need and determine the accuracy and reliability of the information they find. Instruction for this should begin as soon as a child learner begins to use......

Successful Online Learning

...Online learning has become one of the largest growing educational systems in America. Not only in America, but it has also spread to other parts of the world as well. In a recent study by New York Times, more than 500,000 Americans take online courses. According to collegeclasses.com, the first online course was known as “correspondence courses” and began in the 1700’s with pamphlets and textbooks that were sent to the students. However, the success of an online student isn’t something that comes easily but is earned through self-discipline and other vital characteristics. According to the article, “Individual Factors and Successful Learning in a Hybrid Course” by Kelly Arispe and Robert J. Blake, success in online courses is a hybrid language. With this in mind, Blake and Arispe point out what the five main important personality traits to contain, which are, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and neuroticism. Before Arispe and Blake go too in-depth, a common question may be, what is a hybrid class? A hybrid class is “a course where a ‘substantial proportion of the content is delivered online [a course that] typically uses online discussions, and [one that] typically has a reduced number of face-to-face meetings” involved (pg.4). However, even though certain personality traits do play a role in the success of learning, success also relies on the learner’s preferences as well. According to Blake, “It is important to know which types of learners thrive...
