We’ve been in class for about two months now and I feel like I’m not picking up the new signs as fast as I was last semester. However, the class this semester is very different from how it was ran last semester. I understand that it’s a different class and that it’s supposed to be harder, but all it’s been is confusing. I’m still not a fan of the packets we’re supposed to do in class because sometimes the terms will be missing or the action will be doubled. It tends to be confusing and takes a lot of time to finish up. I am kind of upset that my professor didn’t have us do video assignments this time around. I felt like those helped a lot when it came learning and reviewing the material more. The slides also tend to be confusing as well, maybe I’m just a confused person, but they seem to be very scattered and not well organized. Also, the terms not being listed at the end of the slides makes it difficult to remember them. I know personally, I write everything down so I can look at it later on and try to memorize them, but that’s hard to do when once I finish writing on word down, we’re onto the next one and I miss the sign completely. Other than that, I’m very excited and nervous about this video project. I feel like it’s going to determine how much we’ve actually learned these past two months and how much we’ve actually committed to memory. So I can’t wait to see that. I think the number of deaf event papers we have to write is a bit unfair considering most of us don’t really have the time available to attend these events when they take place due to work or other commitments. ...Journal 3 Crystal Lafler Introduction to Psychology 100-06 September 24, 2012 Journal 3 Why do people make sounds? Very simple people make sounds when they talk, scream, laugh, and yell. I make sounds all the time when I am talking to friends or even family I even hear sounds when someone is talking to me. Right now I hear my television playing and the baby monitor. When I’m sleeping I still hear sounds only because I have to keep alert for the monitor just in case my daughter wakes up. She is my alarm in the morning I don’t need an alarm clock. When my oldest daughter yells in her room, I have to tell her to use her inside voice, only because it echoes’ in my room because of the monitor. It is never quite at my house there is always a baby screaming or crying or I have my 5 year old running around screaming and yelling. There is not a spot in my house that’s quite except at night when everyone is sleeping. The way I see it deaf people have it made, because they don’t have to deal with high pitch screaming and crying, but it also sucks, because then they don’t understand what people are saying to them unless they use sign language. I’m always telling my daughter to keep it down while her sister is sleeping because she has a tendency to be very loud she has to be louder than the television sometimes. I even tell her you don’t have to be so loud mommy hears you just fine. I’m constantly dividing my attention between both of my girls. It’s a battle......

Deafness, in the early centuries of American life caused many problems for those that were deaf. Doctors did not understand the root causes of deafness and books were rare at the time. Until the most recent years, doctors finally understand why deafness occurs and the deaf communities in the world today are being respected and admired, with the aid of American Sign Language. “ASL has many roots not only is it rooted in the French ideas, but also the ideas of the Great Plains Indians in America” (Butterworth & Flodin, 1995).The man responsible for bringing sign language to light in the United States is Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. Gallaudet studied the French ways and returned to America in 1817 where he founded the first school for the deaf in America, near present day Hartford, Connecticut. The college was appropriately named Gallaudet College, after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. ASL is starting to be referred to as a foreign language. The deaf event I chose to go to was a Sunday morning church service at the Deaf Outreach Church. The purpose was to observe and communicate with others using sign language that weren’t from class. There is a difference from signing signs we are learning in class and holding a conversation with others. I needed to apply what I learned in the classroom to real life. 2. Researchers and doctors define illiteracy as “the absence of knowledge that involves but is not confined to graphic marks. It has been contended that the term may also apply to the difficulty one experiences in interpreting and using written materials in a variety of contexts, as well as the inability to take part in a literate culture despite having mastered its written symbols.” (Massone) The question now is who is categorizes as being illiterate? ...Mariya Vorobeychik ASL 102 Deaf Event paper One of the best parts of taking ASL at UB is that we are required to attend deaf events. I think that going to an event is beneficial to learning ASL because you get to experience an entirely different situation and observe other people and how they sign. I have learned going to each event that everyone signs a little different. Its like slang in English, some people sign a little differently from others depending on where they went to school. The event that I got to enjoy was going to the Canandaigua Wegmans and sitting in on the FLCC ASL Club. They were so welcoming to anyone that wanted to attend, especially other students from different schools learning ASL. Every Wednesday of every month the FLCC ASL Club hosts meetings at the Canandaigua Wegmans from 6pm to 8pm, I attended the event May 7th. I was researching different events online and stumbled upon this one. I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn from other people and go to a different school to see how they learned and what they were learning at the time. Deaf Festival

...Deaf Festival I turaly enjoyed this event so many Deaf people coming together for a celebration. I was able to witness every type of communication a Deaf person can utilize. I saw how Deaf-Blind receive information and I couldn’t peel my eyes away. The performancy were amazing especially the dance interpretation with ASL. I meet so many Deaf people from all over the nation even meet someone from Cuba who knew Cuban Sign Language but not ASL that was a new experience sharing signs but her and a Deaf women were able to get by really really interesting to see 2 different Sing Languages but able to understand one another. Experising my thoughts again on the way communication was shared during the performances was jaw dropping: multiple interpertors for specific use either, translating for those needing Enlgish, ASL for needing ASL but on both ends of the stage and the amazing teaming for voicing. We discuss a lot how much a conflict between the hearing world and Deaf but for the first time I was able to witness both worlds not segergatated but intertwinging with one another, I witness people speaking enjoying themselves and Deaf people speaking enjoying themselves but what I enjoyed was Deaf people weren’t entirely outnumber outside Deaf events I’ll run into a Deaf person here or their always outnumbered by hearing, not on this day Deaf people flourished. Deaf in the Military

...Grandfather and Great Uncle had. But there is one reason this dream could not become a reality, Keith Nolan was born deaf, therefore does not according to current Military standards qualify to do so. Keith has spent a decade applying repeatedly to the Army's ROTC program. After many letters and responses back telling him no, he finally received a yes. This positive response was given to him by the Bravo Company at California State University at Northridge. Keith not only passed all of the required academic tests and studies, but he also surpassed the physical requirements as well. And although he was told at first that he would only be able to participate in only the learning aspect of the program and not be given a uniform like the other cadets, he was given a whole gunnysack of equipment for showing such respect and heart for the Army. He had in fact become one of the top performers in his class. That’s why in May of 2011 is his dream was brought back to reality, and he was instructed to turn in all of his gear and say goodbye to his fellow cadets and commanding officer. He could advance no further under the military's current policy that requires cadets pass a hearing test to be commissioned. Nolan has contacted the Army and is waiting for a response as to what the difference is in allowing a soldier who has lost their hearing in combat to return and allowing an already deaf person to be admitted into a non-combative position, within the Army as well. According to the Gualledette Research Institute there are currently over a million people between the ages of 6 and 65 who are Deaf (Harrington 1). While several state and federally funded programs have been implemented to support early and post-secondary education for the Deaf, evidence points to a significant lack of job placement assistance for Deaf young adults transitioning from college to independent living. Deaf graduates often return home to live with family due to an inability to obtain employment reflective of their academic achievements. Currently in America the most common type of employment held by Deaf individuals is limited primarily to the service and manufacturing industries. The objective of this research is to investigate the professional sector of employment in the United States to uncover the driving mechanisms behind the non-presence of the Deaf Community, specifically those with post-secondary education, and to examine what steps are being taken to resolve this apparent disparity. ...Have you ever thought been deaf and blind? Annie Sullivan is a teacher in the story The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. When Annie first saw Helen’s family, Annie explained, “Language is more important to the mind that light is to the eyes” (Act I). Some people think that they are perfect, but they do not think about an outside world. Most of people are not really strong or they just give up to the world. When Annie was teaching Helen, Annie cried, “Helen, Helen! The bird must come out of its shell. You come out too” (Act III). Annie developed and grew up through this wonderful story, working really hard. At the beginning she was strong and determined, but Annie evolved at the end to be successful. At the beginning of the story, Annie was strong willed and determined. Annie was an orphan, her entire life. Annie lost her family but she lost her brother at the same orphanage she lived. It made Annie see how horrible it was to live that life is. So Annie did not want Helen to experience the same as she did. ...On Deaf Culture Deaf culture is usually found in Deaf schools, and Deaf Clubs. Having Deaf culture depends on the person and how they accept being deaf. This is different for every deaf person, depending on their situation. At Deaf school is where culture begins. Here everyone is equal and they can interact with other deaf kids. This gives them a since of actually belonging somewhere. Hearing people see the Deaf schools as a dumping ground for deaf kids. When in actuality it is a place for the Deaf to identify themselves. Deaf of Deaf acquire their culture from infancy, but only about 10% are Deaf of Deaf, others get this culture from attending Deaf schools. And yet there are still others who are put in mainstream schools who aren’t exposed to Deaf culture until college or even when they start attending Deaf Clubs. Deaf communities consider themselves family and believe in taking care of each other, Deaf take care of Deaf. Deaf value Deaf of Deaf, they want to preserve deafness. While hearing people want to do away with deaf by cochlear implants and even hearing aids, are hearing people’s way of fixing their deafness. Deaf people do not need to be fixed. They are very capable of leading a normal life. They think this would destroy Deaf culture; besides cochlear may improve only environmental sounds but it does not cure deafness completely.
