..."Eccentric." Needless to say, the Wall Street Journal did not publish a splashy feature on Darwin Smith. But if you were to consider Smith soft or meek, you would be terribly mistaken. His lack of pretense was coupled with a fierce, even stoic, resolve toward life. Smith grew up on an Indiana farm and put himself through night school at Indiana University by working the day shift at International Harvester. One day, he lost a finger on the job. The story goes that he went to class that evening and returned to work the very next day. Eventually, this poor but determined Indiana farm boy earned admission to Harvard Law School. He showed the same iron will when he was at the helm of Kimberly-Clark. Indeed, two months after Smith became CEO, doctors diagnosed him with nose and throat cancer and told him he had less than a year to live. He duly informed the board of his illness but said he had no plans to die anytime soon. Smith held to his demanding work schedule while commuting weekly from Wisconsin to Houston for radiation therapy. He lived 25 more years, 20 of them as CEO. Smith's ferocious resolve was crucial to the rebuilding of Kimberly-Clark, especially when he made the most dramatic decision in the company's history: sell the mills. To explain: shortly after he took over, Smith and his team had conclude that the company's traditional core business -- coated paper -- was doomed to mediocrity. Its economics were bad and the competition weak. But, they reasoned,......

...Doctor In kindergarten, my class was asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Crayons danced across sheets of paper to illustrate our dream occupations. Our drawings were hung in the hallway for our parents to see at Back to School Night. I remember looking down the line and seeing pictures of ballerinas dancing, firefighters putting out a blaze, and astronauts leaping across the moon, careers that were seen as typical dreams of five year olds. My picture showed a girl throwing a ball in the air, being a professional athlete, but as you can see my point of view of my future has changed. Now I want to be doctor because I want to cure cancer and do the impossible by helping people and not just work out and play my whole life. A question could be asked like why choose to be a doctor and not a professional athlete, well I believe a doctor can make a change, inspire people, be a leader and etc. Being a doctor you have to be able to be a directive, supportive, coaching, and delegating leader. A directive leader finds aspects to positively acknowledge and give direction, and ensures that those under their management understand what is expected of them in which a doctor must do his or her colleagues or patients. He or she must be able to coaxes ideas from those working under them, listens and encourages, and keeps the decision making process collaborative by asking open questions. They also have to be capable to find topics to praise, lead with novel ideas, explain the......

... The Doctor “Magistrate Communication Style” “Transformation” XXX TMGMT 314: Interpersonal Skills in the Workplace G. Kent Nelson, Ph.D. University of Washington – Tacoma 03 June, 2009 The Doctor Introduction The Doctor is a film that outlines the ways that doctors around the world think. It is about a doctor who finds out the hard way that there's more to medicine than skill in the operating theater in this emotional drama. The main character is Jack McKee, who is a gifted but arrogant surgeon. He cares little about the emotional welfare of his patients and is little more than a benign stranger to his wife Anne and his son Nicky. He has been suffering from a nagging cough for some time, and when he begins coughing up blood one morning, he finally allows another doctor to take a look at him. The doctor discovers that he has a malignant tumor in his throat that could rob him of the ability to speak, or even kill him. He now becomes a patient instead of a doctor, and learns first hand about the long stretches in the waiting room, the indignity of filling out pointless forms, and the callous attitude of the professional medical community. He also gets to know June, a terminal cancer patient whose joyous embrace of life as her time draws to a close is an inspiration to him. After recovery, Jack becomes more determined to be a caring healer and strives to be a better husband and father. But his new outlook on life turns former friends into foes, and dislike co-workers in...

...Doctors Without Borders Crystal Stophel ETH/316 August 6, 2013 Leslie Ann Dunn Doctors without Borders According to “Medecins Sans Frontieres”(2013). “Doctors without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) works in nearly 70 countries providing medical aid to those most in need regardless of their race, religion, or political affiliation”. This international medical humanitarian organization was established in 1971 by doctors and journalist. There are several reasons MSF provides medical aid to those in need. Epidemics, malnutrition, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare are some of the reasons the MSF would provide help. The organization also advocates in situations where issues are neglected. The MSF reserves the right to bring attention to any situation that the organization sees as abuse or neglect. MSF operates independently and are separate from any political, military, or religious affiliations, and remains neutral. The MSF evaluates certain areas to determine how great of a need there is in that particular area before opening a program. Since the MSF operates independently, funding for the organization comes from private, non-government sources. In 2009, MSF had 3.8 million individual donors and private funders worldwide. (“History and Principles”, 2013) Ethically the MSF believes it not only important to help one in a time of need, but also to advocate for one in need. They believe no matter race, religion, or political affiliation everyone......

...approached about not being able to talk to Anne, he really started to need Anne in which he relays to her shortly after his surgery. It is ok Jack, I have always wanted to slit your throat…now I have the chance to do just that. To Jack, it is very much a boys game sort of like a clique and if colleagues do not play the game his way, colleagues do not get respect. Jack has his “guys”, the ones whose back he covers and vice versa then he has his colleagues that he completely disrespects for the compassionate way they practice. It was not until he, as a patient, was treated how he initially treated his patients that he realized, compassion is such a big part of what he does on a daily basis. In the end, it is profound how he realizes that every doctor becomes a patient somewhere down the line. When he realizes that, it is no longer a boys’ game and he starts standing up for what is right, especially when he finds out his colleague, before performing surgery on a man who is now suing them, tore up a patients’ records. As for the colleague who he continually disrespected, he later became the surgeon that Dr. MacKee needed the most. When you have thirty seconds before a guy bleeds out, I would rather you cut straight and care less. Dr. MacKee is so callous towards his patients in the beginning. The initial scene, the audience witnesses where Dr. MacKee is saving a man who attempted suicide, after the surgery is completed, his associates ask if there is anything that he......

Doctors Story

...A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery. He answered the call ASAP, changed his clothes & went directly to the surgery block. He found the boy's father pacing in the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the dad yelled, "Why did you take all this time to come? Don't you know that my son's life is in danger? Don't you have any sense of responsibility?" The doctor smiled & said, "I am sorry, I wasn't in the hospital & I came as fast as I could after receiving the call...... And now, I wish you'd calm down so that I can do my work" "Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would U calm down? If your own son dies now what will U do??" said the father angrily The doctor smiled again & replied: "I will say what Job said in the Holy Book "”From dust we came & to dust we return, blessed be the name of God". Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go & intercede for your son, we will do our best by God's grace" "Giving advises when we're not concerned is so easy" Murmured the father. The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy, "Thank goodness!, your son is saved!" And without waiting for the father's reply he carried on his way running. "If U have any question, ask the nurse!!" "Why is he so arrogant? He couldn't wait some minutes so that I ask about my son's state" Commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left. The nurse answered, tears coming down her face:......

...Official and a contact person responsible for receiving complaints and train all members of their workforce in procedures regarding PHI. An individual who believes that the Privacy Rule is not being upheld can file a complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR).[19] However, according to the Wall Street Journal, the OCR has a long backlog and ignores most complaints. "Complaints of privacy violations have been piling up at the Department of Health and Human Services. Between April of 2003 and November 2006, the agency fielded 23,886 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act complaints related to medical-privacy rules, but it has not yet taken any enforcement actions against hospitals, doctors, insurers or anyone else for rule violations. A spokesman for the agency says it has closed three-quarters of the complaints, typically because it found no violation or after it provided informal guidance to the parties involved."[20] However, in July 2011, UCLA agreed to pay $865,500 in a settlement regarding potential HIPAA violations. An HHS Office for Civil Rights investigation showed that from 2005 to 2008 unauthorized employees repeatedly and without legitimate cause looked at the electronic protected health information of numerous UCLAHS patients. 2013 Final Omnibus Rule Update In January 2013, HIPAA was updated via the Final Omnibus Rule.[21] Included in changes were updates to the Security Rule and Breach Notification......

The Doctor

...even with the very best of treatment - will identify with this film. "The Doctor" tells the story of an aloof, self-centered heart surgeon who treats his patients like names on a list. In comparison with the film to the Six Principals of Care, the characteristics of the healthcare professionals lack the importance of these six principals which is dignity, independence, safety, communication, infection control, and privacy. Here are some examples that I gathered from the film that should have been handled a better way. A client is waiting to see the doctor for a routine check-up. As the doctor walked in to the examining room, he said hello, avoids eye contact with the client, and immediately took off the client’s gown without communicating the procedure to her. He continued to examine her numbingly and then said “You’re ok”. The client was speechless, and she accepted the doctor’s un-quality of care. There were two principals that the doctor did not provide to the client during her examination; which is dignity and communication. When the doctor walked in the examining room, he must communicate the procedure by explaining that he will be removing her gown, and there will be some therapeutic therapy of her body. By communicating this information with the client, she will feel safe, secure, and unviolated because the doctor is informing or asking for her consent. At the end of the examination the doctor should try to make the client comfortable, ask how she is doing......

...Why do you want to be a doctor? A few months ago my answer would’ve been that that’s what I’ve been told I should be ever since I could remember or I would say that ‘ I want to help people’. All doctors help people though. It was only recently I came across my true reason. “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi. I am truly fascinated with human anatomy. Its complexity intrigues me and I would love to continue learning more about it. However, learning about it just on a scientific level will never be satisfactory for me. Being able to interact with people and have them put that trust into you will be an honour. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service to others” – Mahatma Gandhi. This is my way of giving back to my country, where I can help and even save others. Through medicine I can reach out to the less privileged. It will also help me in gaining experience in understanding the complexities of diseases and be a part of curing these diseases. I feel a pull to doing medicine, like it was meant to be. So back to the question, “Why do you want to be a doctor?” This is my way of brightening someone’s day every day. I want to be the person someone can trust when they are in their greatest need and make some change in this world. I want to save lives, operate on inoperable tumors and cure diseases. A doctor has a fascinating, rewarding and challenging career. This is one challenge I’m......

...will make your learning much easier if you will just remember that di hadapan means "in front of" or ahead of so evidently the word hadapan in the above three sentences denote something that is going to take place in the future. "Will it rain?" is simply translated as Akan hujankah? I hope you will not need to use the next sentence during your stay in Malaysia but learn it anyway in case you have a bad experience. The sentence is Saya akan panggil polis and it means "I am going to call the police". Lesson 16 Kalau… (If…) hujan = to rain, is also a noun datang = to come (pergi = to go) Kalau hujan dia tidak akan datang. If it rains he will not come. sakit = sick Kalau sakit pergi jumpa doktor. If you are sick, go and see a doctor. jumpa = to meet someone Kalau tidak faham tanyalah saya. If you don't understand ask me. faham = to understand Kalau begitu saya tidak akan pergi. Note that in sentences two and three above anda (you) is not necessary as it is obvious you are referring to the person whom you are addressing. The suffix lah in Kalau tidak faham tanyalah saya is meant to soften the tone so that it does not appear as a harsh order. Doctor Faustus

...indeed Doctor Faustus that summed the evil form of Mephistopheles and bargained with the devil for control over him, it is really Faustus who is being controlled by the Evil Trinity. The Doctors free will, one of the distinguishing factors of humankind, one of Gods greatest gifts given to man, has been taken away from him. The Evil Trinity is subtly controlling his every move, poking and prodding him so that he stays on the path they have laid out for him, the path to Hell. Whenever Faustus begins to question his decision and seek repentance, either Mephistopheles distracts him with earthly pleasures or facts of hell, the Evil Angel whispers some doubt in his ear, or the Devil himself appears and threatens John that it is all over and far too late. Pitiable Faustus is being persistently brainwashed by evil, yet he is under the influence that he is still in control of his life and the decisions that he makes. The infernal powers are incessantly tugging on the strings of their marionette, Doctor Faustus, leading him to his impending doom. God never gives up on John though, as His love is boundless and His mercy endless. God can be seen in Faustus’s life through the beauty of God’s creation, the Good Angel on his shoulder, and even in the pious man who urges John to repent as his end is drawing ever nearer. God never turns His back on the doctor, and continually tries to hail him, yet Faustus never truly turns around and acknowledges God’s calling until it is too late. Doctor......

...Doctor Faustus Christopher Marlowe Prologue * Chorus comes on and tells audience that the play isn’t going to be about war, valiant deeds, or love, but all about the fortunes of some guy named Faustus * Faustus was born in a town called Roda in Germany and was raised by relatives in Wittenberg * He excels at his studies of Theology, so much that he’s very quickly given the title of doctor of divinity and can out debate anyone * Faustus’s pride is a serious problem * Because Faustus is so proud he’s not happy being a mere theologian, so he opts instead to study magic Act 1 Scene 1 * Meet Faustus, he’s busy figuring out what he wants to do with his life – he mulls over the options: philosophy, medicine, law – he rejects them all for being too boring and too pointless * Every time he reads the Bible Faustus can’t help but conclude that man’s sins give him no hope of heaven anyways * Faustus decides to study magic because a magician is almost like a god * He tells his servant Wagner to fetch Valdes and Cornelius, his friends, who happen to be a couple of magicians * Before they stop by the Good Angel enters and tells Faustus to lay the books of magic aside and to read the scriptures instead * Bad Angel disagrees & thinks Faust should go ahead with his plan because he’ll be godlike * Faustus is convinced and begins to wax poetic about all the thing he’ll do once he masters magic – especially excited about the whole...

Hospitals and Doctors

...Hospitals and doctors’ offices need to have interpreter when seeing a patient, someone that knows the common languages spoken in that particular city and printed information for less common languages. In the long run, it will void malpractice and lawsuits. When a patient goes to a hospital, a legal document needs to be sign and some will complete such form without really understanding the procedure or what the document says, therefore, the lack of knowledge based on language barriers needs to be eliminated. If we look at lawsuits, an attorney can well say that the client signature means that he agree to all the terms. Such statement can be argued but in the end, the patients name is on the legal document, a document that stays that they agree and understand the terms. Further, minorities often depend on family members and friends to interpret when they go to the hospitals, doctors and when reading health related information.
