FATHOM THE CULTURE BEFORE COMMUNICATING There is a Greek saying that ” Every tale can be told in a different way” ,it clarifies the different influence which the culture causes precisely. And it also reflects what we need to do before communicating with people who have different culture background, that is , fathom the culture before you’ve made up your mind to interact with others. So there comes the first question, what role does culture play in our daily life? And how does culture affect the way we communicate? This may be explained from the original aim and principle of communication. First, senders and receivers of messages constitute the two side of the conversation. However, the role is not limited one person, we are not only senders, but also receivers. When we say something and try to make our thoughts and expressions understood by others, we are senders of the message, but when we are the listeners and try to get it, we are receivers. But can we convey messages? We use languages. Language is a tool which we can use to convey messages, and it is language that forms different styles of culture. Language is a kind of magic code, we weave the code by the medium of language, which tells you how to decode it, and the receiver use the same principle to translate the code into messages. Form the program of communication, we can reach the point easily that it is language that forms the difference between communications. Then you may ask, now I believe that language affects the way of decoding when conveying messages, but how can you clarify culture affects the way we communicate? Well, I have to say that it is impossible to separate our use of language from our culture. I will also explain what I learned about the communication process from this exercise and also what seemed to be the main cause of the misunderstandings. I had a customer the other day who was having difficulty getting her phone added to her car through Bluetooth. I had said I would help her but I just couldn’t seem to get her to understand what I was saying. It ended up taking a lot longer than it should have taken but I was able to help her in the end. In this situation I was the sender and my customer was the receiver. A voice channel was being used as well as a visual channel as I had to show her as well as describe to her the steps in the process. ...What I have learned from the Communicating Effectively Module The main focus of the studies in this module was the Myers Briggs Type Indicators. These indicators describe the way in which different people think and approach the world. It tells us that each one of us has preferences from the four descriptors giving a possible 16 personality types, Extraverted/Introverted, Sensing/INtuitive, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving. After reading through descriptions of each type, I assessed myself as having an ISFJ type. However, when my results arrived from the MBTI Test completed online, my results were an ESTJ type. Upon reading into the characteristics I questioned whether I was really an extrovert as I have always thought of myself as shy and reserved. The traits of an extravert are those who are energised when they talk though tasks with others and prefer to act after doing so. They enjoy the company of others especially if discussions and projects are in an area of common interest. I originally chose the Feeling type as I consider myself a people person; however I also like to be objective and to look at things logically and debate the issues.
