Shades of Red

...The Shades of Red By Angela Yohey We were children pushed together by marriage. We became sisters by choice much later in life as adults. Colleen Michelle was born August 28, 1971 in the Bloomsburg hospital just nine months after me to a woman not yet my mother. Her birth was just like her, in a hurry to start living life. She decided to leap into the world a whole 19 days early; no one, not even a doctor was going to tell her she needed to wait one more second to do what she was ready to do. She has continued to live her life with enthusiasm and energy. She was raised as an only child in a family that now has three daughters. I was raised with my biological sister Stephanie by our mother in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. Our parents divorced when I was five and Stef was eight. Colleen was four when her parents divorced. Her mother and my father married, and soon after they moved to Pittsburgh where Colleen would be raised. I always thought she had the best of him, and for that I was envious. I did not know their relationship had struggles from so far away. It would take years before a child would become a daughter and a stranger would become a father. Her very nature is flamboyant, as are the many shades of red in her personality. When she enters a room, the door flings open with a flurry of activity and chatter. It is straight to kisses and hugs that are not your average embrace. She takes you into the fullness of......

Shade of Being Human

...rest of my life. Mother brought flowers and candy. Grandmother came with fruit and my uncles clumped around and around my bed, snorting like wild horses. When they were able to sneak Bailey in, he read to me for hours. Her family loved her all the way through her trauma, and she moved from despair to hope with their help. Alice Walker and Maya Angelou are both extremely courageous writers. From each we receive a rare and poignant gift. As her book suggests, Alice Walker challenges us to search for resolution in the face of loneliness and despair. Maya Angelou, who "knows why the caged bird sings," reminds us that loneliness and despair never have the last word. She gently points us to a window of hope. Both women bless us with shades of being human....

50 Shades of Religion

...The mystics say you can find God anywhere. I believe many women have found him in “Fifty Shades of Grey.” The trilogy has sold more than 10 million copies, mostly to women over 30 who can’t put the books down. Publishing rights have been sold in 37 countries and movie rights have been secured by Universal. Even British hotelier, Jonathan Denby, has decided to remove all the Gideon Bibles from his hotel's 40 rooms and replace them with the book in the Damson Dene Hotel in the Lake District of England. The books chronicle the relationship between a dominating male entrepreneur, Christian Grey, and a young female college graduate, the submissive Anastasia Steele. The series has been mulled by many writers who have debated whether or not this is a setback for women, to be attracted to a submissive relationship, or a breakthrough, to be able to openly read and discuss a book so sexually explicit that it is often referred to in the media as “mommy porn.” I think the “Fifty Shades” phenomenon is a thinly veiled rewrite of religion. Not religion in the conventional sense of the word, but in how we are redefining faith practices today as more and more people, especially women, shun man-made traditions yet continue to yearn for religious experiences. Something, yet again, to reassure those afraid of the unknown. Diana Butler Bass writes in “Christianity After Religion,” that millions of people share her story “of growing up in a formal religion, finding that somehow chilly or......

Fifty Shades

...” I reach up and stroke his face as he gazes at me, his eyes wide. “And if you can do that—give me that—I’ll move in with you,” I add softly. He inhales sharply, surprised. “You’d do that?” he whispers. “Yes.” “But you don’t know me.” He frowns and sounds choked and panicky all of a sudden, very un-Fifty. “I know you well enough, Christian. Nothing you tell me about yourself will frighten me away.” I gently run my knuckles across his cheek. His expression turns from anxious to dubious. “But if you could just ease up on me,” I plead. “I’m trying, Anastasia. I couldn’t just stand by and let you go to New York with that . . . sleazeball. He has an alarming reputation. None of his assistants have lasted more than three months, and they’re never retained by the company. I don’t want that for you, baby.” He sighs. “I don’t want anything to happen to you. You being hurt . . . the thought fills me with dread. I can’t promise not to interfere, not if I think you’ll come to harm.” He pauses and takes a deep breath. “I love you, Anastasia. I will do everything in my power to protect you. I cannot imagine my life without you.” Holy cow. My inner goddess, my subconscious, and I all gape at Fifty in shock. Jeez, three little words. My world stands still, tilts, then spins on a new axis; and I savor the moment, gazing into his sincere, beautiful gray eyes.jvjvjchchcgxgxgxgxhxhchcjcjchxhchxhxhc vjfhxhchchcufufufh fjcjcififuduffuxhxxhxfuxucuxuufhffiufufifjfifj fufufufuchxuxysjsbs...

Title Vii, Fifty Years Later

...Ashley Kelley Professor Keith Syska LEB 323 Final Paper Title VII, Fifty Years Later Introduction July 2nd, 2014 will mark the fifty year anniversary of the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VII of the act made workplace discrimination illegal. However, fifty years later we are still debating the issue and there is overwhelming evidence that discrimination in the workplace still exists. Alarmingly, workplace discrimination claims based on race filed at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) have reached record highs within the last three years. In 2010 alone, there were 93,727 charges reported to the EEOC . This article will review current law regarding discrimination by employers. It will determine if these laws are effectively preventing or reducing discrimination in the workplace. Finally, this article will explore what changes, if any, should be made to the law. I. Relevant Law Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is intended to make illegal discrimination by an employer based on race, color, sex, religion, or national origin. Title VII applies to employers who have at least fifteen employees. Originally, the minimum was twenty-five employees until the Equal Opportunity Act of 1972 reduced the number to fifteen. The most recent modifier of Title VII is the Civil Rights Act of 1991 which kept the employee minimum at fifteen but allowed for monetary damage awards for victims of discrimination. The Equal Employment......

Missing Shade of Blue

...Michael Wenc Professor Stewart PHI 255 4/20/16 Missing Shade of Blue During David Hume’s time in Scotland during the 18th century, he made many contributions to the philosophical community. One of his best workings during his time was that of the copy thesis. Along with the thesis is an example supporting his thesis, known as the missing shade of blue example. Hume puts forth a well thought out example showing how the copy thesis works. However, Hume, also gives his own counter example to his example, which destroys his own example. In order to grasp what is actually going on with Hume, I will lay out his copy thesis and define what he calls impressions, put forth the missing shade of blue example, as well as try to decipher his reaction to his counter example. It is given a few different names throughout time, but we will go ahead and stick with the name copy thesis. The copy thesis is simply stated as such, every simple idea is a copy of a corresponding impression. For Hume, one’s perception or ideas, are partly made up of things called impressions. When Hume says impressions, he is referring to one’s sensory or emotional states. An example of someone having an impression would be someone being sad and then having the impression of sadness. Impressions hold varying amounts of force and vivacity. We can think of force and vivacity as a kind of volume knob for our conscious, or a consciousness knob showing a level of consciousness. It can also be seen as a casual......
