Oral Health

...Practicing Oral Health i. Why did you choose this health behavior? The main reason I choose this behavior is because I think taking care of your mouth is the upmost important thing to do as it can affect other parts of your body. I have always taken care of my teeth to avoid the dentist as much as possible and keep cavities at a bare minimum. Oral hygiene is important to keep up with because nobody wants to have rotten teeth. We all want a perfect smile without stained or cavity filled teeth so why not take care of them right the first time so never have to get false teeth. For me, oral hygiene is one of the first things I ever think of and I hope other people feel the same so they can have long lasting teeth and avoid the dangerous cancers and gum diseases. The potential epidemiology of oral hygiene can always lead to a disaster of things by simply ignoring it or putting things in a mouth that causes negative health issues. The epidemiology of oral health is influenced by age, sex, origin which is associated with oral cancer risk and established risk factors including alcohol and tobacco use, for example. Additionally, possible associations between oral cancer risk and oral hygiene, diet, nutritional status, and sexual behavior as well as the influence of genetic factors on oral cancer risk are considered (NIDCR Home). Oral health also has an effect on other persistent diseases. Because of the failure to tackle social and material determinants and incorporate......

Oral Cancer

...Oral Cancer: The Quiet One Imagine for a moment being silent. Imagine having the words to say, but no means to make them heard. Try to envision your life without being able to taste your favorite foods, or perhaps never being able to eat them at all, even though they might be readily available. Picture having all the water you could ever desire, but never being able to quench your thirst. It sounds something like hell, doesn’t it? This isn’t just some make believe version of hell; it is a harsh reality of our world. Each year, thousands of people will experience this nightmare for themselves. “Why?” you may ask. It is all caused by an easily detectable form of cancer: oral cancer. When identified early, the disease can be easily treated and rarely requires radiation or chemotherapy. However, very few people actually get checked for oral cancer, despite the fact that it could save hundreds if not thousands of lives each year. One of the least publicized forms of the disease, oral cancer has very few signs or symptoms in its early stages, can easily and rapidly spread to other areas of the body, and has an extremely high mortality rate. In the early stages of oral cancer, there is often no initial pain. It is difficult to detect without a detailed familiarity with your own body or an experienced professional’s examination. Self examinations can be helpful, but since the mouth often has various bumps and lumps appearing and disappearing, the beginnings of oral......

...The Impacts of the French Revolution Latisha Wilson His 104 Professor Irene Geisler 6/17/13 The French Revolution was motivated by many origins. Many French people were displeased by the political, social and economic disorders, especially those of the third estate. The philosophers of the enlightenment changed publics’ points of view of government and society. Their goals were to expose and destroy the inequalities of the old order. The enlightenment ideals emphasized the idea of natural rights and equality. The enlightenment which was a period of where new ideas were spread throughout France often criticizing absolute government and the injustices of society. Enlightened thinkers believed that through reason humanity could advance into a new and better world. The Philosophers of the enlightenment were a vast political cause. They spread the idea that everyone should be equal. They tried to apply reason and the scientific method to laws that shaped human activities. John Locke believed that people have three natural rights. Life, liberty and property. The most impressive of the philosophers was the writer Voltaire. He fought for tolerance, reason, freedom of religious beliefs, and freedom of speech. Montesquieu wrote about separation of powers, dividing power among to separate branches of government. Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote in favor of human freedom. The enlightenment movement opened up citizen’s minds about positive change, respect for a person’s place...

...Smoking Smoking is probably the worst thing you can do for your respiratory system. It is the greatest cause of respiratory diseases. Smoking is known to cause lung cancer, bronchitis, oral and throat cancers and also heart attacks. The main 3 substances in cigarettes that cause problems for our respiratory systems are nicotine, carbon monoxide, and tar. Nicotine is actually a natural insecticide produced in tobacco plants to kill insects. It is an addictive chemical. Carbon monoxide affects the reparatory system really badly because it affects the ability of the respiratory system to deliver oxygen to the body cells. Carbon Monoxide actually diffuses into the blood stream instead of the opposite. Tar is also very bad because of its stickiness it accumulates in the alveoli and of Corse this can lead to problems in gas exchange. The tar itself is also made up of hundreds of different chemicals that are toxic and some are cancer causing. Some of these chemicals irritate the airways causing swelling and increased mucus. Tar also stops the cilia and bronchi from being active. There is not much you can do to prevent this because its not a disease its ultimately your choice if you want to do it or not but its highly not recommended. Also if you don’t smoke but have a smoker in your family try to stay away from them when they’re smoking to prevent second hand smoke. As far as treatment goes the main thing is to quite smoking. There is a thing called FLAP......

...overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system. In history major changes take place often. One example of a major change was the French Revolution. The French Revolution occurred in France during the late 1700’s. The French people wanted to replace their Absolute government with a democracy. The ideas of the Enlightenment encouraged members of the 3rd Estate to revolt against Louis XVI. Revolution is change. The French Revolution is an example of change. There were many causes that led to the Revolution. One cause was the 3rd Estate wanted freedom. The 3rd Estate had a meeting to declare their equality within the French government. They produced a document known as the Declaration of the Rights of Man. Another cause of the Revolution was the need to lower the tax burden on the 3rd Estate. The 3rd Estate paid most of the taxes in France. A third cause of the Revolution was people wanted to have a democracy. In order to achieve this democracy the French people felt they had to execute Louis XVI by guillotine. There were many effects from the French Revolution. One immediate effect was instead of getting a democracy Napoleon took control of France. Napoleon was a dictator. However, over time France becomes a democracy. Today France is a democracy. One of the most important long term effects of the French Revolution was the inception of the Napoleonic Code, which influenced revolutions in other countries. It instilled the spirit of hope and freedom......

...The post has just arrived and in it a very nice surprise, the discovery that Jacques Seguela, one-time adviser to President Mitterrand, now close confidant of President and Madame Sarkozy (indeed he intoduced them), and something of a legend in French political communications, has dedicated his latest book to little old moi. With apologies for the missing accents here and in the French bits of the long posting which follows – the dedication to ‘Le Pouvoir dans la Peau‘ (Power in the skin) reads ‘A Alastair Campbell, mon spin doctor prefere’ (three missing accents in one word – mes excuses sinceres). So what did I do for this honour, you are asking? Well, perhaps the fact that he asked me to read his book, and write a ‘postface’ assessment both of his writing and of the issues he covers, and the fact that I said yes, has something to do with it. He says some blushmakingly kind things in his ‘preface to the postface’, which I will have to leave to French readers of the whole thing (published by Plon). But for the largely Anglophone visitors of this blog, I thought some of you might like to read the said ‘postface’ in English (apart from the bits where I quote direct from his book). I hope all those students who write asking for help with dissertations will find something quotable in it. Meanwhile I am off to Norway for a conference and a meeting with the Norwegian Labour Party. I’m looking forward to being in the country with the highest ‘human development index’ in......

Oral Language

...------------------------------------------------- Oral Language: Introduction Oral language is about speaking. This section describes what happens when people talk. For most of the time, we take oral language for granted. Young children appear to learn to speak without the intervention of parents or teachers. It just seems to happen naturally. When something goes wrong with speech - through deafness, strokes, accidents - we begin to realise what a complex achievement it is. Someone learning or teaching English as a second language will also be conscious of the complexities of oral language. In writing this section, we were very aware of the unsuitability of the written medium for discussing spoken language. It is much easier to describe syntax and morphology because these appear in the written form of the language, which is what books are designed for. Writing involves no sound; the symbols are taken in by the eye. When we speak, however, we are using organised sounds that are taken in by the ear. It is very much harder, therefore, to convey spoken language because understanding depends on being able to hear different sounds, rhythms, and patterns of intonation. The examples need to be heard rather than seen. This part of the book can deal with only some of the concepts and information about speech and suggest other elements to look for. A videotape, entitled Oral Language, accompanies this book. We were also aware that for most teachers, the study of oral language is......
