General George C. Marshall

I selected General George C. Marshall for my leadership and management paper. Born George Catlett Marshall, December 31, 1880 in Pennsylvania, he was both a military leader and a diplomat. Regarded as one of the principal architects of America’s defeat of both Germany and Japan during World War II; I will define the ways in which he was a leader and manager. The leadership roles he had and their similarities. The obstacles he had to overcome and whether or not he was effective.

How He Was a Leader and Manager

General Marshall was one of a rare breed of people who are successful in all they do. While we all know people who are successful in one thing or another, seldom do we see someone who consistently are effective in such a broad range of jobs. If you look at General Marshall’s career, regardless of the challenge given him, his leadership and management was guided consistently by a set of never-changing principles. “His traits of honesty and candor gained the trust of millions of Americans and the respect of world leaders during his 50 years of selfless service” ("About George Marshall", 2009). He managed people, programs, and materials during both a time when the world was at war or during peace time. He strove to do the right thing in everything he did and quickly became a master of any situation. He earned the undying loyalty of those who either served him or served with him.

Leadership Role Similarities and Differences

He approached every leadership role with nine basic principles. They were integrity, taking action, selflessness, candor, preparation, learning/teaching, fairness, vision, and caring. ...GEORGE WASHINGTON THESIS Coming from a modest family and not having a superior level of education, George Washington would prove worthy to become a true leader at a young age. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Colonial Virginia and was the first child of his fathers’ second marriage. His father, Augustine Washington and mother Mary Ball Washington were owners of a tobacco plantation and gained a reputation as being moderately prosperous. As a young boy, George Washington suffered many family tragedies with the loss of several of his siblings and by the age eleven the loss of his father. I'm immersed in his career right now, viewing all of the silent features and many of the shorts with students at the University of Chicago. Having already written about Keaton's "The General" (1927) in this series, I thought to choose another title. "The Navigator," perhaps, or "Steamboat Bill, Jr.," or "Our Hospitality." But they are all of a piece; in an extraordinary period from 1920 to 1929, he worked without interruption on a series of films that make him, arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies. Most of these movies were long thought to be lost. "The General," with Buster as a train engineer in the Civil War, was always available, hailed as one of the supreme masterpieces of silent filmmaking. He would not make that mistake in his next election. His sense of appealing to the majority and his beliefs in the status quo of segregation drove his beliefs until the status quo changed. Desegregation came and people accepted it and his sense of appealing to the majority caused his own view to change. He’s always telling him what to do and how to behave much like a father would with his child, which would suggest George cares about Lennie “I ain’t gonna let em hurt Lennie”. However this is not always shown to be true as George doesn’t always treat Lennie very well in the novel, he often shouts at him and calls him a “crazy bastard.” But George does help Lennie stay out of trouble, and sorts things out if they have any problems “like [they did] in weed” as George says “you do bad things and I got to get you out.” Killing Lennie shows how loyal George is him as he knows it’ll be kinder to kill Lennie while he’s imagining their dream farm than to let Curley shoot him painfully in “his guts.” George is reasonably smart, he’s clever as far as finding work is concerned. He often says he’d be better off alone and sometimes it seems like he’d rather do this than own a farm with Lennie “if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an’ work, an’ no trouble.” But George isn’t just with Lennie because he feels responsible for him. Lennie gives him companionship and lets him believe that the dream of owning a farm could come true. George is a realistic character when he lies under the stars in chapter one, he seems happy “tonight I’m gonna lay right here and look up.
