Germany as a federation is a polycentric country and does not have a single economic center. Only 3 of Germany's 100 largest companies are headquartered in the capital Berlin. The stock exchange is located in Frankfurt Am Main, the largest Media Company Bertelsmann AG is headquartered in Gutersloh; the largest car manufacturers are in Wolfsburg, Stuttgart and Munchen. Germany has a social market economy characterized by a highly qualified labor force, a developed infrastructure, a large capital stock, a low level of corruption, and a high level of innovation. It has the largest national economy in Europe, the fourth largest by nominal GDP in the world, and ranked fifth by GDP (ppp) in 2009.The service sector contributes around 70% of the total GDP, industry 29.1%, and agriculture 0.9%.
Industry and construction accounted for 29% of gross domestic product in 2008, and employed 29.7% of the workforce. Germany excels in the production of automobiles, machinery, electrical equipment and chemicals. With the manufacture of 5.2 million vehicles in 2009, Germany was the world’s fourth largest producer and largest exporter of automobiles. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Germany expanded 0.20 percent in the third quarter of 2012 over the previous quarter. GDP Growth Rate in Germany is reported by the German Federal Statistical Office. Historically, from 1991 until 2012, Germany GDP Growth Rate averaged 0.3 Percent reaching an all-time high of 2.1 Percent in June of 2010 and a record low of -3.7 Percent in March of 2009.
Unemployment in Germany is expected to continue to decline by over 100,000 to some 2.8 million. This is due to new jobs and demographic change. Older individuals are…...

By 1910, Germany had almost caught up with Britain on the production of industries such as coal and steel, with the rate of growth overwhelmingly surpassing that of the Britons. Germany was also home to new industries, like that of chemicals, which quickly saw 90% of the world’s hair dye exported from Germany alone. However, the impact of a healthy economy was not entirely positive. Rapid economic growth brought an increase in class divisions, as the traditional system came under threat as a result of changing methods. Further, the industrial revolution saw urbanisation become a growing trend as people relocated to the job-filled cities; nonetheless, overcrowding saw a fall in living conditions and a rise in discontent with the working environment, leading to increased membership in trade unions. Being one of Europe's largest national economies Germany has had some recent trouble concerning their national output. Their GDP took a decline in the second quarter of 2014 and news came that “the government this week slashed its official growth forecasts from 1.8% to 1.2% for 2014, and from 2% to 1.3% for 2015” economist (2014). Being a manufacturing industrial giant with companies such as Volkswagen, Bosch, Nivea and numerous more the fact its exports dropped by 5.8% in august shows that this could have been partial reason to the GDP decline. Germany realise heavily on the export of the goods they produce within its country's borders so any decline in this will have a definite affect on the countries economy and as we can see this is what has happened here. The graph below shows Germany's recent forecast of exports which has plunged in the second half of 2014 to -5.8%. Another factor would be Germany’s adjustments on their fiscal policy “a sharp decline in capital investments contributed to a 0.2 percent contraction in the second quarter” Reuters (2014). Poorer economic data and a far from solved debt crisis are making analysts more skeptical about the future. How companies view the situation is more important though. This will be revealed by the Ifo business climate on Friday, which is also set to fall again. Financial analysts give an increasingly negative assessment of the outlook for the German economy. The ZEW index for the economic expectations in Germany dropped again in October. At -48.3, it came in slightly below expectations (Commerzbank forecast and consensus: -45.0). Well over half of the analysts surveyed meanwhile believe that the economic situation in Germany will deteriorate in the next six months. That said, Germany is the only country for which the index for the current situation is still clearly in positive territory, at 38.4. For the euro zone and the other surveyed countries, the figure is already in deep negative territory. These figures do not really bring much news; the fact that analysts have reduced their growth estimates again for next year – meaning they assess the outlook less favourably – is already in the newspapers. However in recent years, German re-unification and changing global economic conditions have caused this economic growth to slow down, until it has become stagnated at the current point in time. I will be looking at the different institutions present in Germany that have contributed to the country’s economic performance, how they actually helped, and why now certain institutions, and certain changing conditions, are now constraining the economic growth into utter stagnation. Perhaps what differs Germany to many other countries is its constitution. Like many other countries, it guarantees the rights of its citizens. However, it goes one step further, committing private property for the public good. This has important consequences for the German economy and its society. The main idea behind the German economic model is that it mustn’t be thought of as a “free market”, such as the economic models that can be seen in the United Kingdom and the United States.
