GMG to exit wide-body aircraft operation and re-focus on high growth domestic and regional routes using new generation narrow-body aircraft

Dhaka, March 28, 2012:
GMG Airlines is planning to adopt a new business strategy in light of rising fuel prices and changing international competitive environment through a 360 degree restructure of its strategy, organization, fleet and business model. It will redesign its route network to focus on higher yield, higher growth domestic and regional routes using new generation narrow body aircraft.

Mr. Sanjiv Kapoor, CEO, GMG Airlines, shared a new strategy stating that GMG will be focusing on domestic and regional routes, as the rapid rise of Middle-Eastern airlines in recent years with their access to advantaged sources of funding, advantaged location, large scale, and lower cost base (esp. lower fuel costs and taxes) is making many airlines, both in Asia and in the West, review their strategies and focus on routes where the competitive environment is more level. As a result, GMG will refocus more on South, South-East, and Near-East Asia, with a few select narrow-body routes to the Middle-East.

As part of the new strategy, GMG has exited wide body operations, and will be replacing their Boeing 767s with new generation narrow-bodied aircraft with a renewed emphasis on on-time performance, reliability, and customer experience. The existing MD 80 aircraft will be removed from the fleet and for some routine periodic maintenance Dash8 aircraft will also be removed from operation for the time being. Along with the shift from wide body to narrow body operations, the airline is also in advanced stages of new routes analysis, new fleet planning and negotiations with lessors and aircraft manufacturers, as well as of right sizing of its workforce to improve productivity. Mr. Sanjiv Kapoor said, "As we transit to the new strategy, our operations will be temporarily suspended with effect from March 30, as we await the delivery of new generation aircraft, clear legacy issues, execute the rightsizing and organize ourselves better to take up the future challenge".
During this period of suspension, all ticketed passengers will be given a full refund through the airline’s sales offices and employees will be paid compensation benefits in accordance with the labour law. Also, the airline is taking necessary steps to retain all of its AOC, route rights, frequencies and will be in full co-ordination with regulators, stakeholders and valued passengers.
On behalf of the board, Mr. Sanjiv Kapoor thanks everyone for the tremendous support extended to GMG through the years since it started operations as Bangladesh’s one of the first private airline for more than a decade.

In February 2008 the airline added a leased Boeing 747-300 to the fleet starting wide body operations, this proved to be a White Elephant in an era which saw Global economic problems and an unprecedented peak in oil prices, thus causing a substantial loss to the carrier, the 747 was eventually phased out after just five months of service.
On 17 June 2009, a local conglomerate Beximco took 50% stake in the airline, rebranding it and raising service standards to a higher level
In January 2012, GMG Airlines grounded their fleet of wide body Boeing 767 aircraft, as they proved too costly for the airline to operate. One of the three aircraft have been returned to the lessor ILFC, and the other two are currently parked in Dhaka pending return to the lessor.
On March 28, 2012, GMG announced they will suspend all operations in preparation for re-fleeting the airline. In expects to resume operations later in 2012
According to CEO Sanjiv Kapoor "[GMG's] operations will be temporarily suspended with effect from Mar 30, as we await the delivery of new-generation aircraft, clear legacy issues, execute the rightsizing and organize ourselves better to take up the future challenges". GMG has stated it is planning to adopt a new business strategy in light of rising fuel prices and changing international competitive environment through a 360 degree restructure of its strategy, organization, fleet and business model. It will redesign its route network to focus on higher yield, higher growth domestic and regional routes using new generation narrow body aircraft.

Rebranding:

On 1 May 2010, GMG Airlines unveiled their new logo and livery via their newly acquired Boeing 767-300ER. The new paint job consists of a white fuselage, accompanied by butterfly wings, flowers and pterals that are featured on the engines and the tail. The GMG logo can be seen at the front of the aircraft, just behind the cockpit. The company's web address can be found at the rear, near the tail.

Media Bias Issues

...Media studies, Cultural studies and Peace studies) and by independent watchdog groups from various parts of the political spectrum. In the United States, many of these studies focus on issues of a conservative/liberal balance in the media. Other focuses include international differences in reporting, as well as bias in reporting of particular issues such as economic class or environmental interests. One high profile academic survey of American journalists is The Media Elite. The survey found that most journalists were liberal Democratic voters.[citation needed] Martin Harrison's TV News: Whose Bias? (1985) criticized the methodology of the Glasgow Media Group, arguing that the GMG identified bias selectively, via their own preconceptions about what phrases qualify as biased descriptions. For example, the GMG sees the word "idle" to describe striking workers as pejorative, despite the word being used by strikers themselves.[4] Herman and Chomsky (1988) proposed a propaganda model hypothesizing systematic biases of U.S. media from structural economic causes. They hypothesize media ownership by corporations, funding from advertising, the use of official sources, efforts to discredit independent media ("flak"), and "anti-communist" ideology as the filters that bias news in favor of U.S. corporate interests. Many of the positions in the preceding study are supported by a 2002 study by Jim A. Kuypers: Press Bias and Politics: How the Media Frame Controversial Issues. In this......

British Airways Debacle

...The British Airways Debacle 1. From the perspective of organizational development; there should be a planned, top-down, organizational-wide effort to increase the organizational effectiveness and health. On the other hand the wild cat strike happened because there was forced imposition. There was a unilateral decision taken to introduce swipe cards (Palmer, Dunford, & Akin, 2009). It was not thought out well because it was introduced at the beginning of the summer quarter, which is also at the start of the peak holiday season. From the perspective of sense making; the management needs to form an awareness of the key elements relevant to the situation. In addition, the management must form an understanding of the means in some bounded context, based on past experiences, training, education and cognitive capabilities. Finally making decisions by generating alternative response action to control the situation, identifying the objectives, constraints, and factors that influence the feasibility and desirability of each alternative. In BA the management did not form an awareness of key elements; they did not realize that the move was being interpreted to manipulate their working patterns. The management did not understand the importance of not introducing an unpopular system before the peak season. Finally, this was not a decision made by examining different alternatives and evaluating them properly. This was an ad hoc decision taken by the management without......

Second, the overseas Filipino worker has to leave her family and friends behind in his/her country of origin while he/she works in a foreign country to meet the needs of his/her family. Third, some workers settle for less than what they deserve – by this, I mean, underemployment. For example, some people who have graduated as doctors in the Philippines can find no jobs here, so they would rather work abroad as nurses (Ruiz, 2004). Fourth, Filipino migrants often face racial discrimination and degradation at all stages of the migration process from the processing of papers to the process of working abroad (GMG, 2010). Fifth, there are employers abroad who are very abusive – may it be physically, sexually, or verbally. There are, however, positive effects of migration as well. First, the OFW is able to make more money abroad than he/she will ever do here in the Philippines given his/her kind of employment. In relation to the first positive effect, the second is that the Filipino migrant is able to meet the needs of his/her family back here in the Philippines. Third, the migrant is able to widen his/her horizon by being exposed to a different culture from what he/she experienced while growing up in his/her hometown. ...2013 MIS - 7650 12/2/2013 2013 MIS - 7650 12/2/2013 Analyzing the HealthCare.gov Debacle Analyzing the HealthCare.gov Debacle Overview On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, putting in place a comprehensive reform designed to improve access to affordable health coverage for American citizens and to protect consumers from abusive insurance company practices (The White House, 2013). To achieve their goal of providing affordable health care to citizens worldwide, the government set up a Health Insurance Marketplace, also known as Healthcare.gov. Under the law, the online marketplace was to act as a centralized portal in which millions of uninsured Americans would have the ability to compare prices and shop for a variety of quality, affordable plans that best met their health care needs (Lee, 2013). In order for the marketplace to be successful, it needed to carry out a slew of tasks including: verify a person’s identity, legal residence, and income; check eligibility status; calculate subsidy; and allow enrollment (Carmody, 2013). In addition, the site would have to interact with a large number of databases operated by various federal and state agencies. Therefore, the website needed to be interfaced with various entities including IRS, Social Security Administrations, and the Department of Homeland Security and credit bureaus (Carmody, 2013). The government assigned Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services......

British Airways Swipe Card Debacle

...Running head: British Airways 1 British Airways Swipe Car Debacle Christopher Michael Worthington MGT351 ~ Organizational Innovation and Change Colorado State University ~ Global Campus Dr. Demuth, Ph.D. March 6th, 2015 BRITSH AIRWAYS 2 Introduction The case study, British Airways swipe car debacle, British Airways (BA) introduced an electronic clocking in system that would record employees work start and finish times for their work day. The decision was made by management to introduced swipe card but, lack proper and adequate consultation with the affected staff members (Palmer, Dunford, & Akin, 2009). As a result, the BA staff held a twenty-four hour wildcat strike which caused BA to cancel its services to over 10,000 passengers stranded during the onset of their busy season. The lack of change management is apparent as management did not communicate thoroughly and reassure staff there would not be turn-overs and pay cuts. The changes in perspective, such as organizational development, change management, sense making, from the strikes are key issues to understand. Because all employees who operate the airline’s frontline employees were unintentionally not involved, the organizational plan to increase in efficiency by implementing the time card swipe system, resulted in a disaster, an employee walkout. BRITSH AIRWAYS 3 Changes at British Airways British Airways mission, strategies and goals of management, in regard to a swipe card introduction,......

Nfl Superbowl Debacle

...NFL DEBACLE Being one the biggest events of a year, Super Bowl is an American football championship game organized by National Football League (NFL). The location of the game is designated by NFL in advance, generally three to five years ago. Although it was one of the days that many Americans had looked forward to, Super Bowl XLV played in Cowboys Stadium Arlington, Texas was a frustration for many people. While 850 people were accommodated in different places, 400 people had to give up their seats. Today, any kinds of institutions are increasingly utilizing benefits of project management, especially for the projects that involve hundreds of people. Therefore, it would not be wrong to say Super Bowl XLV was one of the events that could have benefited from project management. As known, project management starts with planning. It sets the goal of the project, emphasizes critical points and provides opportunity to be ready for possible negative outcomes while project proceeds. It works like guidance throughout the project. However, it should be open to revisions because problems faced as project proceeds might require modifications. Also, it should be capable of answering a long list of what-if questions. Essentially, it is the most important step because most of the time failures during the project stem from mistakes made in planning phase. For sure, the mistakes made in Super Bowl XVL case go back to planning stage. It was known that Super Bowl XLV would be played......
