Shine & Kung Fu Hustle

...into his wonderful creations. Some attributes of Hicks directorial style demonstrated in my chosen visual text Shine include camera work, music, and the terrifyingly subtle use of lighting to develop the atmosphere and create apprehension in the audience. On the contrary, Stephen Chow’s ostentatious special effects, camera work, lighting and sound in Kung Fu Hustle in no way waned to present the same ideas and rivet the audience on to the end of their seats to witness the anticipated metamorphosis of antagonist to protagonist. In Shine, Hicks’ concoction of multiple cinematic techniques effectively portray the idea of the change and the transition from the suppression of the individual to the strength of the individual. Hicks’ use of specific techniques helps the audience learn more about Peters Authoritarian mindset and further develops the oppression felt by David’s character whilst portraying the idea of change. This enables the audience to understand the more complex underlying themes in the film and makes the audience more aware to the specific role of each character in the film and how they are all intertwined with each other at a deeper level. Consequently, it successfully challenges us, the audience, to consider how we might have felt in David’s situation and helps us draw conclusions about the nature of relationships and family dynamics. A scene, in Shine, that Hicks uses cinematic techniques, lighting, music/sound, symbolism and dialogue is scene ten where......

Essay on Shine

...Question: A successful visual or oral text is one in which a director seeks to create new realities and/or fresh perspectives for old ideas. Undeniably, the visual text Shine is successful because the director, Scott Hicks, seeks to create new realities and fresh perspectives for old ideas such as love. Through his astute concoction of visual techniques such as: lighting and camerawork amidst verbal techniques such as dialogue and music Hicks portrays “…the power of love – both to destroy and to redeem.” Shine follows the story of a piano virtuoso David Helfgott in his struggle to overcome the adversities caused by his father Peter in order to achieve his own dreams and ambitions of becoming a well-established musician by attending The Royal Academy of Music. Shine is successful in the sense that the director, Scott Hicks, creates new realities for old ideas such as love by presenting the power of love to destroy. This is an interesting alteration to the old idea because it contravenes our superficial conception that love is completely constructive. The idea of the power of love to destroy is presented through the character of Peter. Peter is a very harsh and abrasive character: he is a Polish immigrant who now lives in Australia and has lived through the atrocities of the Holocaust. As a child he had his family taken away from him and the psychological after-effects of this horrid experiences is evident in his character. Peter is very over-protective of his family......

Arise and Shine Forth

...As you may know our theme as a stake this year comes from Isaiah 60:1. Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. I have been pondering that scripture for a few weeks now as I have prepared for speaking today. I have thought a great deal about the words “arise” and “Shine” and how they relate to me and my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In reference tot his scripture Elder Orson Pratt wrote: “The Zion that is here spoken of is called to ‘arise and shine, for the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.’ There is no one thing more fully revealed in the Scriptures of eternal truth, than the rise of the Zion of our God in the latter days, clothed upon with the glory of God from the heavens – a Zion that will attract the attention of allthe nations and kindreds of the whole earth. It will not be something that takes place in a corner or on some distant island of the sea, or away among some obscure people’ but it will be something that will call forth the attention of all people and nations upon the face of the whole earth.” Again, as I read that quote from Elder Pratt I thought of it in connection with my own testimony of the gospel. His description of the rise of Zion and the attention that it will draw, along with the words arise and shout, speak to the way we, as members of this church, with knowledge of a risen Lord and a true Zion, should feel about our testimonies and sharing them with the people around us. Many of......

Why Understanding Today’s Labor Market Is an Opportunity for Managers to Shine

...Carpe Diem: Why Understanding Today’s Labor Market is an Opportunity for Managers to Shine Carpe Diem: Why Understanding Today’s Labor Market is an Opportunity for Managers to Shine The culmination of our nation’s highest unemployment rate in decades and a growingly diverse workforce appears to be the perfect storm for company leaders. As businesses are slashing jobs, managers are required to do more with less. Human resource (HR) managers must be precise on hiring the best employees and offering the most attractive benefits for a diverse labor market. Department managers must maximize employee productivity. Gone are the days when managers can hide behind their desks unconcerned of their department’s work culture. The downward economy has forced senior leadership to take a red pen to wasted resources. Unproductive departments face possible layoffs or consolidation with other departments. Understanding the characteristics of the current labor market creates an opportunity for managers to grow their company’s human capital and propel their careers. Managers must understand today’s evolving labor market, in order to attract the best workers, effectively lead, and successfully motivate workers—create a competitive advantage with little room for error. Why Understanding the Labor Market Attracts the Best Workers. The diversity of the labor market is a reflection of our changing society. According to Mitchell et al. (2003), in the next two decades a......

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, visiting Berlin, urged the German government to do more to boost lackluster domestic demand, which the U.S. and others argue is partly to blame for the anemic economic growth in the euro zone as a whole. Do Tax Cheats Solve the U.K.’s Productivity Puzzle? URL:http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2013/10/22/do-tax-cheats-solve-the-u-k-s-productivity-puzzle/?KEYWORDS=productivity abstract: Economists in Britain have long been scratching their heads over the nation’s troubling “productivity puzzle.” Now Markit, the financial information provider that publishes the purchasing managers’ indexes used to gauge activity in the global economy, has tentatively suggested that former tax cheats might be muddying the waters. Britain has a bigger workforce than it did before it tipped into recession in 2008 yet is producing far fewer goods and services. This mismatch between output and jobs has led to a collapse in productivity, a measure of how effectively an economy uses its resources that’s an important driver of future growth prospects. ...News and Current Affairs Programme 1 ITN National and World News This programme is a national type and is broadcast right across the British Isles on a daily basis. It is not a specialist programme in the sense that it does not focus on one particular genre of news.eg sport, instead it covers every area and delivers it in a formal manner. The particular programme that I have taken notes on appeared on our screens and was broadcast on 10/10/10 at 6:00pm. It was presented by Alastair Stewart and Mary Nightingale and the headlines of each individual story were read out in the studio. This was then followed by images and graphics appearing on screen as the voice-overs of the news presenters could clearly be heard explaining the story. The first story that was covered was about how the Vitamin B could potentially benefit people that suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The first part of this story used graphics on the screen as well as the use of voice-overs to narrate what the diagrams and statistics on screen meant. The story then progressed into interviews with experts on the matter, all of a medical background and with extensive knowledge in Alzheimer’s disease and also the Vitamin B. These interviews were taken in medical rooms with clear equipment and charts visible on camera the whole time to reiterate the issue. Finally the story was concluded with footage of old age pensioners who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and a summary voice over being made on......

...The company “Nutiva” did a re-branding campaign the beginning of 2014 for its product line with new labels. Nutiva is the world’s leading brand of all-organic hemp foods, coconut oil, red palm oil and chia seeds. Their logo is: “Nourishing People and Planets. Revolutionizing the way the world eats”. They are a values-driven brand, dedicated to providing nourishing food and supplements. The beginning of this year, they launched a clean simple new look to the labels of their products which hadn’t had a packaging change in 15 years. Their inspiration for the change was to look as fresh, healthy and vital on the outside of the package as what they have inside. The labels are simple, clean, modern looking white background with watercolor inspired designs of the plant product that is inside. The website article found at Nutiva.com was my choice for this assignment. This re-branding idea is very important in successful advertising to help rejuvenate a product. Nutiva’s original labels were very every day common blending in with its competition. The fresh look will attract new consumers that may be buying other similar products. Media campaigns with the new look that were launched by Nutiva are part of the marketing mix to help this product sell. The internet marketing and advertising Nutiva has done with the “new” look are the campaign mix that the DeVry course in “Advertising and Public Relations” is teaching. Nutiva wants to keep its brand image consistent and also have it......

In the News

...In the News Apple has revealed a new promotional material that lets its users have the ability to switch between major mobile carriers for their data plans. Apple will now ship out in their new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 a built-in sim card that allows users to purchase wireless service on the spot. Previous ipads have always had the ability to let you hop between carriers just by swapping out the sim card; however, Apple has simplified this process further with one sim card that lets you hop onto whichever carriers is listed on their iOS. These carriers include AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S., and EE in the U.K. Apple does plan to expand the list of global carriers in the future. Why does this matter? Well I think this really takes the carriers out of the retail loop and makes it easier for Apple users to be able to switch seamlessly between the three major U.S. carriers for on the go data plans. It makes the carriers a lot closer to the interchangeable pipes that they’re afraid of seeing because it effectively lessens the powers of the mobile carriers since they rely on their control of the retail sales and service channels to prevent customers from switchovers and to be able to upsell additional products. Interestingly enough, Verizon has opted out of this new Apple sim so far, which shows the disproportionate strength of Verizon in our market as compared to the other three carriers. Verizon thinks that they have enough market power to tell Apple what to......

When Light Shines on Literature

...When the Light Shines on Literature The Enlightenment Era is a period of philosophic and scholarly excitement which took place globally in the early eighteenth century. In a historical context, the American Enlightenment led to the American Revolution, American Independence, and the creation of the Constitutional Republic of the United States America (Bailyn 26-27). Influenced by those of the European Enlightenment, such as John Locke and Isaac Newton, and fueled by the colonist’s growing frustrations with the English Crown, the literary soil of the New World was a fertile garden. From this newly enriched land sprung both flowers of poetry and the nutritious fruits of the realistic pen that were deeply inspired by the American Enlightenment. The literature of the Enlightenment period was powerful indeed, as it motivated people to think and to take action. Two superlative examples of American Literature and the influences of the Enlightenment Era are Philip Freneau’s poetry and Thomas Paine’s prose. The influence of enlightenment ideas is in the works of both of these important literary figures. Philip Freneau was the poet of the American Revolution (Bowen 213). From Freneau’s naturalistic poetry, such as “The Wild Honeysuckle, we can see the Enlightenment idea that nature is a revelation of God that holds instructions for mankind. “The Wild Honeysuckle" was America's first major poetic account on the themes of life and death. The poem begins by discussing the types of......

News

...News The News is a wonderful and scary thing at the same time. I personally steer clear of the news as it tends to blow matters way out of proportions and with being in the military I rather be briefed on things of national security by my superiors vice the local news that only gets pebbles from the locals. I think that the news can be good at times, but in my experiences it tends to stress society out way more than it needs to be. An example of this is I have been to Bahrain numerous times, and all my mother would see on the television is riots and unruly behavior there. I on the other hand did not watch the news, got the security brief from my superiors and carried on my mission. While I was there it was nothing as what my mother and the news had depicted. Every time I have been there it has been peaceful and the locals have always been so very nice. Audience The intended audience was originally for locals, as it was broadcasted on the local news channels. The written news article I chose was from New York Times. Since the incident occurred in Phoenix, AZ, I purposefully chose the New York Times as it is located across the country. This choice makes for a better comparison of data from across state lines. Credible MSNBC and the New York Times are both credible sources that individuals rely on everyday to hear anything from the weather to local in international news. Both of these reports were similar in nature. The New York Times tends to go more in depth, so their...

The New Jerusalem

...The New Jerusalem William Blake And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among these dark Satanic Mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my charriot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land. William Blake’s poem, The New Jerusalem, is the one chose because I found it truly amazing. It includes biblical and historical ideas. In my opinion, the poem should be taken literally keeping in mind the hidden messages it portrays. The poem describes that Jesus did not walk on England’s hills; instead, it were the druids who controlled England while Jesus was in Jerusalem, thus England was a place of "Satanic mills." Since Jerusalem was not originally created in England, English must make their own Jerusalem. Personally, I liked Blake’s way of make connections with the words. This makes the poem more interesting and adds more meaning to the story being told. The idea of the poem is to show the transformation of England when it was involved in war and corruption and now, the times of piece. I believe that Blake is trying to express that Earth has the potential to be at complete peace, not......
