Understanding How We Learn

...Understanding How We Learn Cinthia Bachtel Family-Centered Health Promotion July 29, 2012 Understanding How We Learn Learning, according to Wikipedia, “is acquiring new or modifying existing, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types of information”(Wikipedia, June 2012). Learning begins when we are born and ends when we die. How we learn is a complicated process. Depending on whose research you read, there are varied opinions as to how many styles of learning there are. In 1992 Neil Fleming designed a tool to identify individual’s preferences for learning which he named VARK. VARK is an acronym for Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic. Answers from a questionnaire are tallied. Based on the responses, it is then determined where a person’s preferences fall. VARK can be used to develop strategies for learning and improving communication. The results point out how one takes in information, processes that information and is able to communicate the information to other people. In the most recent questionnaire the learner’s results showed a four-part or multimodal learning profile. The four scores were high enough and similar enough that the learner can approach learning in many different ways. They have each mode available depending on what is being presented. The fact that this learner chose forty four answers out of sixteen questions signals that more than one mode is......

How Children Learn to Read

...How Children Learn To Read Krisy Green Ashford University Author Note This research assignment is being submitted on March 4, 2013 for Professor Lisa Edmunds EDU411 Reading & Cognition course How Children Learn To Read The success of a child’s educational future is dependent upon their ability to read, and without their ability to read, a person cannot enjoy all this world has to offer, such as reading about world history, reading a letter from a friend, or learning a new language. Reading unlocks doors that would otherwise be locked forever. In recent years, there has been a great deal of debates on the methods used to teach our children how to read; parents and teachers need to determine whether the whole language, phonics, or the combination of both methods is the most adequate approach for teaching children how to read. Thomas Hopkins Galluadet first developed the whole language method in the early 1800s. The method was originally developed for deaf mutes because they were completely unaware of phonetic sounds for letters. The whole language method teaches children how to read with complete words, rather than breaking them into parts or syllables. Children are repeatedly drill with simple words until they can recognize the by sight, and then they are introduce to more complicated words. The whole language approach is considered more creative and interesting for a child who is eager to learn. In a whole language learning......

How Do I Learn

...Title : How do I learn? “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever” (Mahatma Gandhi 1869-1948). Throughout life humans go through learning process. Learning is defined as obtaining information or skills through observation, study or experience. There are different types of learning styles according to Kolb’s learning theory (Payne,E. and Whittaker. L, 2006). Each individual learns in a different way, simply because they perceive and execute information or experience in their own preferred style. Kolb (1984) describes that there are four learning styles which would be Converger, Diverger, Assimilator and Accommodator respectively. I see my-self best fit into Diverger and Accommodator learning styles. According to Kolb, a diverger learner is good at applying concrete experience and reflective observation. A diverger is able to view things from different perspectives and often learn through observation. They also tend to solve problems using imaginations and carries feeling oriented personality. Divergers prefer to be an observant rather than taking part in any situations or issues. Kolb says that divergers perform well in situation where it requires generating ideas such as brainstorming. They often influenced by others, enjoy working in a group, like to receive positive feedback, and prefer to learn via logical instructions. For example, I had an interesting learning curve during my past working experience as a software programmer. For......

Understanding How One Learns

... I believe that having an understanding of how one learns is absolutely essential in the success of any career field of choice. For any individual to know how they learn will be of a great benefit in how they take in and retain information. Not everyone processes information and learns at the same pace this is why it is so important to know how one learns so that the he or she may get the best out of their learning ability. In order for an individual to be successful in their career goal of choice he or she must know how to carry out the work appropriately in their career field of study in order to have a promising career. For instance, some people are visual learners, while others are more hands on learners. Some people need object lesson illustrations to process the information given, while others can take the information in just as is and understand it clearly. For any individual to know how they learn will ultimately determine how far their lifelong journey of learning goes. Some people are not where they should be from a learning standpoint because they have not taken the time to know how they best learn; therefore they are struggling to obtain information as it is given in their lifelong process of learning. The career that best peaks my interest is the career study of Pastoral/Evangelistic Ministry. Do to this career choice of mine I know that the lifelong learning that I must go through will have a lot to do with how to interact with individuals from all......

How Adults Learn

... Kathryn Nivins Module 1 Assignment How Adults Learn The study of adult learning has been a major focus of educators since the 1920s. Prior to the post war era, there was very little debate regarding the learning differences between adults and children. Pedagogy is the study of teaching/education with a primary focus on theory instruction. This structure base for educators was a widely accepted practice for all levels and student types. Malcolm Knowles developed a theory in his MA thesis that challenged the ideas of pedagogy with respect to adult students. His thesis focused on the learner rather than the teaching method. The main idea was that the learning process differs greatly between children and adults for a variety of reasons. This idea was further refined in future books written by Knowles in the 1970s and he coined the idea with the word “andragogy” or the “adult focused teaching approach”. [1] The characteristics that define this new approach are: a need to know, experience, readiness, applicability, and motivation. Throughout this essay, I will discuss the characteristics of adult learning as defined by Knowles and identify the differences for each of these qualities with respect to the learning process for children. The first quality that Knowles identified is that adults are “self-directed” or need to be engaged in what they are learning. Most adults that have returned to the classroom are there most likely by choice. They are engaged in the......

How Children Learn

...What is Your Philosophy of How Children Learn? By Kate Wright April 24, 2013 Parents, I wanted to welcome you to my class and fill you in on my philosophy of how children learn. This information will help you understand the reasoning behind why we do the things we do in class, and will help build a school to home connection for all families. There are many theories about how children learn by many different theorists. After much studying of the way children learn, I have come to identify most with the theorist Urie Bronfenbenner. Bronfenbenner’s theory is called the Bioecological Theory. It states that a child’s environment deeply affects the child’s development. A child’s environment includes not only his home and school, but also his relationships with the people in these settings, the experiences he has here, and the child’s culture and family beliefs (Marotz, 2012). All parts of a child’s environment work together to influence the child’s development. In addition to this, I also identify with the Essential Needs Theory. This theory states that our physical needs, psychological needs, learning needs, and need for respect and self-esteem must be met in order to properly develop (Marotz, 2012). Through several years of teaching my experiences in the classroom and the observations I’ve made support each of these theories. My first year of teaching, I had a sweet boy in my fourth grade class, for the sake of privacy, I will call Tim. Every day Tim came to......

How to Learn Bulgarian

...How to learn Bulgarian By: Geri Emiri As an AUBG freshman I immediately became fascinated with Bulgarian culture and language. Although Bulgarian language seemed very difficult to learn at first, I overcame those barriers by pure motivation and careful consulting with AUBG upper graders. I gathered all my current knowledge and experience into this short guide directed to AUBG non-Bulgarian speaking students who wish to learn Bulgarian. Despite this guide’s brevity it contains all the necessary steps for you to speak like a real Bulgarian. First of all you need to find a bunch of Bulgarian friends to start with. Disturb them and abuse them by asking every possible moment about different Bulgarian words. Repeat this step until you have mastered the usage of some words in Bulgarian, like greeting for example, or until your Bulgarian friends get tired of you and do not want to hang out with you anymore. In the second case you will need to replace your friends with others. Try to be all the time surrounded by Bulgarians. After getting your friends you can go grab something to eat together. This step is important because if you want to learn Bulgarian you have to eat like a real Bulgarian. You have to go where authentic Bulgarian food is made, and observe how Bulgarians order food and eat. If you do not know what “binicka”, “airan”,” byrek” or “bakllava” are, you will have a hard time grasping the essence of Bulgarian language. Remember, you are what you......

How I Learn

...There are many different ways people can learn. I think the way you have grown up influences the way we learn. There are 7 different learning styles, Visual: You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding. Aural: You prefer using sound and music. Verbal: You prefer using words, both in speech and writing. Physical: You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch. Logical: You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems. Social: You prefer to learn in groups or with other people. Solitary: You prefer to work alone and use self-study. But I don’t think you can put a person in just one learning style. For me I use several different styles solitary, logical and visual. I like to be alone, study and memorize. I’m very dependent on lists. I like using pictures, charts and diagrams to show relationships with the learning. With learning more about myself on how I learn. I think I can improve on my learning. Read stories, assignments out loud. I can create a personal interest in my topics. Make an association with what I’m studying to recall it better. When I make my list I can extract key points that I need to know. I think one thing I learned is the library. We have databases that give you a lot of resource that we can trust. Then just hitting the internet and hoping it’s correct. You can also email the Librarians, which is very cool. Read the syllabus. It’s a very critical resource, it’s like a road map for your class. Make......
