A franchise business is a business in which the owners, or franchisers, sell the rights to their business logo and model to third parties, called franchisees. Franchises are an extremely common way of doing business. In fact, it's difficult to drive more than a few blocks in most cities without seeing a franchise business. Examples of well-known franchise business models include McDonalds, holiday inn, FedEx, and burger king. In the United States, there are franchise business opportunities available across a wide variety of industries. To invest in a franchise, the franchisee must first pay an initial fee for the rights to the business, training, and the equipment required by that particular franchise. Thereafter, the franchisee will generally pay the franchise business owner an ongoing royalty payment, either on a monthly or quarterly basis. This payment is usually calculated as a percentage of the franchise operation’s gross sales.
After the contract has been signed, the franchisee will open a replica of the franchise business, under the direction of the franchiser. The franchisee will not have as much control over the business as he or she would over their own, but may benefit from investing in an already-established brand. Generally, the franchiser will require that the business model stay the same. For example, the franchiser will require the franchisee to use the uniforms, business methods, and signs or logos particular to the business itself. The franchisee should remember that he or she is not just buying the right to sell the franchisers product, but is buying the right to use the successful and tested business process.
The franchisee will also usually have to use the same or similar pricing, in order to keep the advertising streamlined. For example, if you saw an advertisement for buy one get one free from a well-known fast food franchise, you would…...

Reflection Webinar: How to Start a Global Health Career

...Reflection Webinar: How to Start a Global Health Career Time: Feb 25th, 2016 @1pm, PST During the webinar: How to Start a Global Health Career, I acquired a great deal of valuable information about career preparation. Six leading experts in global health and social entrepreneurship shared their experiences about how they got started in the industry. Specifically, they talked about the best ways to connect with global health opportunities, skill sets that one should develop, how to conduct oneself in a job interview, strategies for cover letters, etc. When talking about skill sets, one idea that they brought up and I found very interesting was having cultural competency skills. Cultural competence is defined as “the level of knowledge-based skills required to provide effective clinical care to patients from a particular ethnic or racial group”, according to Wikipedia. Indeed, cultural competency skills are very important for those who are achieving global health career. The language barriers sometimes become a problem for medical professionals to give meditation effectively. Therefore, paying attention to develop cultural competency skills is crucial for medical professionals. Reference Wikipedia. (n...

How to Interview a Rock Start

...interviews such as occasional silences, body language and questions order what would otherwise be missed. First of all, it is worthy to introduce the myth of the rock community. Frith (1981) stresses the importance of this point because for most rock bands “music is little more than the background sound of activities” (1981:167). According to this author, “in understanding the myth of the rock community we have to understand how the street experience of leisure -dance-hall drunks, doing nothing, tedium and laughs, fighting and male fellow-feeling- has been sentimentalised, distanced, organised into the rock 'n' roll experience” (1981:1981). One of the best examples to illustrate what kind of skills a rock journalist would have is clearly represented by an icon of the popular culture such as the magazine Rolling Stone. Founded in 1967 in San Francisco (USA), the magazine is well-know for its creative and provocative style. Although this publication is an essential reference for rock interviews and these particular professionals know better than others how to carry out an interview with a rock star, most of the standards for interviewing difficulty vary. However, there are some aspects of the magazine, especially in its early days, which must be mentioned: the particular aggressive and gritty style, at times breaking the rules of the journalism; the use of personal experience and emotions and sarcasm. In particular, this style is commonly represented by one of the......

How to Start a Business in Canada

...contrast, industries with little to no barriers to entry, such as the restaurant industry, make it very easy for new businesses to enter. In order to start a business in Canada, you first need to come up with a business idea and then methodically turn it into a structured plan, while ensuring to consider the degree of competition in your respective industry. This is a critical first-step, as the smoothness of your day-to-day operations will rely a great deal on the organizational model you established in your business plan. In Canada, there are four legal forms of business to choose from: sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, and cooperative. In sole proprietorship, the business owner is directly responsible for all debts and obligations related to their business. In turn, all profits generated by the business are for their keeping. Some of the advantages of choosing a sole proprietorship form of business are: simplicity and inexpensiveness, direct control of decision-making, and a limited regulatory burden. Disadvantages of sole proprietorship include an unlimited liability for the owner, which can result in creditors going after personal assets if the owner’s business lacks the financial resources to cover their debt obligations. In sole proprietorship, it can also be difficult to raise capital on your own, and depending on how successful your business is, your income will be taxable at a personal rate. Similar to sole proprietorship is a partnership. This is......
