The Age of Baroque was between 1600 and 1750. “The term ‘baroque’ is associated with such features as ornateness, spatial grandeur, and theoretical flamboyance” (Fiero, 2011, p. 10). The Age of Baroque follows the Renaissance, which means ‘rebirth.’ Therefore, the Age of Baroque can be in comparison to the years of adolescence, where the events and cultural patterns are contradictory and full of emotional statement. This paper will highlight two examples of art, music, descriptions of architecture, philosophy, and literature of time as well as reflect how each example reflects both world events and the cultural patterns of the time.
Examples of Art The first two examples of the Age of Baroque are those of art. Art during this age used the contrast of light and dark and effects that produced illusions to evoke emotions by the viewers. Religious subjects were often the theme of the portraits to portray a dramatic scene to give viewers the sense that he or she were active participants in the scene. This was reflective of the world events and cultural patterns focused on religious matters, such as the Catholic Reformation and the cultural events that were emotional for individuals. The first example is The Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio (1571-1610). The painting uses the strong contrasts of light and dark and shows the religious subjects of Christ and his disciples. The emotion produced in the painting by using technique to give the illusion that Christ is reaching out to both the viewer and the bread in the painting. More emotion is felt from the disciples, especially the disciple to the left of Christ. This disciple appears to rise from the painting with a look of astonishment. The second example of art is the…...

Effect of a Paper Plane’s Different Masses on Its Time on Flight

...Effect of a Paper Plane’s different masses on its time on flight The following experiment (underneath) is to do with a paper plane and its mass and time of flight. Here is a chance to experiment with different masses of a paper plane to observe how it affects it’s time of flight. Research Question: How does the mass (g) of a paper plane affect the time (seconds) of its flight? Hypothesis: It is expected that, the more mass on the paper plane’s wings, the time of flight will decrease. This is because more mass; the faster gravity will pull it down. *Independent variable: Number of paperclips (amount of mass in grams) Dependent variable: The time of flight –measured in seconds. X Controlled variables: Throw it with the same force in each throw, and same angle of the throw. Materials:  Stop watch  3 pieces of A4 paper to make paper planes  1 balance  12 paperclips Method: Make 3 ordinary paper planes from A4 sheet of paper Find someone who is willing to throw the paper plane for all the trials in the experiment. Take the paper plane and weigh it using the balance (weighing scale), to note down its mass. Find an open space for the plane to fly freely and take your planes there. Throw 1 paper plane from shoulder level and start the stop watch at the same time of the throw. Stop the stop watch the moment when the plane touches the ground. Record your data and repeat steps 4-6 four more times. For the second trial, add 1 paperclip to each......

Time Capsule

...Final Project: Time Capsule Jack B. Gilmore Kaplan University Final Project: Time Capsule 4/18/2325—I received a phone call this morning, requesting my presence at the site of an archeological dig. I was informed that what appeared to be an intact “time capsule” with a “1/1/1970” date-stamp was found in the rubble of Old Washington D.C. America was a different place then—people were free to eat red meat, the internal combustion engine was everywhere, and procreation was not regulated, to name just a few of the now seemingly barbaric practices that were commonplace in that America. Knowing this, the contents of this capsule should hopefully shed some light on our ancestors, and the information contained within will most certainly be invaluable to historians studying the era of the 1960’s. Item #1: An intact and remarkably well preserved newspaper dated August 8, 1964 with the headline “Johnson Declares War!” The paper is of course referring to President Lyndon B. Johnson and his declaration of war on Vietnam with the Tonkin Gulf Resolution (Chambers, 2000). While the United States had been gradually entering into war with Vietnam for approximately a decade by this point (Britannica.com, 2013), it was the incidents in the Tonkin Gulf and Johnson’s resolution immediately following that solidified the war in America’s psyche. Before this, the Vietnam conflict was simply just that—a “minor conflict” to the majority of America, and as this was a far more preferable......

1960 Time Capsule

...1960 Time Capsule Vickie Canzenza Kaplan University The first of the five items that were found in the 1960 time capsule was a newspaper with “Kennedy Assassinated” on the first page. http://www.theguardian.com/theguardian/from-the-archive-blog/2011/nov/22/jfk-assassination-tragedy-world-archive Late in his brief term of a thousand days, Kennedy took up the civil rights issue because of the increased in violence in some of the southern states. He called for increased federal power so that voting rights could be enforced. The major civil rights acts included public accommodations opening and an end to job discrimination. (Salem, 2009) After the Bay of Pigs incident he became “hard line,” by appointing militant anticommunists such as John McCone as CIA director and General Curtis LeMay as commander of the Air Force. He also insisted that western powers remain in West Berlin. (Salem, 2009) The major event of Kennedy’s foreign policy arose in 1962, when Khrushchev tried to establish nuclear missiles in Cuba. Kennedy used information and ideas from his task force and his advisers and blockaded Cuba and to threaten Khrushchev, Khrushchev then withdrew the missiles. (Salem, 2009) He was interested in “peace as a process,” and in 1963, the United States and the Soviet Union ended the nuclear threat. Kennedy listened to advisers who insisted that the United States should send troops to Vietnam to show the South Vietnamese army how to fight, even though skeptical, Kennedy...

1960s Time Capsule

...Time Capsule Unearthed - The 1960’s Revisited Kim A Murphy SS31-10RP1 March 11, 2014 Evelina Panayotova Time Capsule Unearthed - The 1960’s Revisited In the 2325 there has been a monumental discovery at the historic site of the Woodstock Music Festival held in Bethel New York in 1969. Our archeologists have unearthed a time capsule filled with a treasure trove of items that seem to remarkably symbolize the 1960’s as a whole. The items found were: a contraceptive known as “The Pill”, A Peace sign, a picture of Martin Luther King Jr., Beatles memorabilia, and a newspaper article from 1963 on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Development of oral contraceptives In 1948 with the help of a small grant awarded from the Planned Parenthood organization (Parethood, 2014) and with the assistance of Dr. Min Chueh Chang American Biologist Dr. Gregory Pincus, began working in the early 1950’s on a hormonal contraceptive (Bio.com, 1996-2013). The experiment was using progesterone to inhibit ovulation. They were later joined by a fertility specialist Dr. John Rock and began human trials in the late 1950’s. Margaret Sanger, the Founder of Planned Parenthood, Medical Director, and Vice-President of the organization was a champion of the work being completed by Dr. Pincus and his colleagues. Frustrated with the meager amount of the Planned Parenthood grant Sanger joined forces with Katharine McCormick, biologist, millionaire philanthropist, and activist who was highly......

...My Time Capsule Paula Perry Kaplan University My Time Capsule If you are reading this letter, then I know you have uncovered my time capsule. I know the times have certainly changed from my era to yours. It is my pleasure to tell you a few things about my society and give you an example of what life was like in the year 2013/2014 for me. My daily routines would start like this: I would wake up at 7am to start my routines. This includes cleaning my house, taking my two dogs outside, eating and doing my school work. While doing my school work I would listen to love songs from the 80’s to relax and concentrate (Perry, 2014). At present, I am enrolled into Kaplan University online pursuing my Bachelors in Psychology. During my day, I have to read my books and post to the discussion boards and comment to two classmates’ posts with minimum 250 words. I also have to attend one seminar a week for one hour online with my classmates and the Professor. During the ten week course we have three essays due, so I am constantly working on them early. Once my school work is over, however, I spend my time surfing the internet such as, Facebook, Yahoo mail, and playing games online. On the weekends I am more active with working out and walking, and spending time with my family. I believe to have a positive balance in my life is by staying in shape (Perry, 2014). In 2013/2014, in our society we judge people by the way they look, I have heard people say if you are......

...Renaissance. Michelangelo’s sculpture of David has come to be one of the most renowned works of Renaissance sculpture, becoming a representation of both strength and youthful human beauty. The next item that I see is a large painting. Upon closer inspecting I see that it is The Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt by Peter Paul Rubens. Rubens painted The Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt in 1616. He was a true Baroque era artist. Rubens use of dramatics and visual diagonal to broaden the sense of immediacy and movement and redirected attention downward into the center of action truly represent the Baroque era style of art. As we search deeper into the chamber we continue to find more and more fascinating items from such a unique and interesting time in human history. In a dark corner of the chamber we have discovered a rare find, the manuscript of Missa de Beata Virgine by Josquin de Perez. Missa de Beata Virgine is a musical set of the “Ordinary of the Mass”. It is believed to have been composed around 1510. Missa de Beata Virgine was the one of Perez’s most popular works in the 16th century. Josquin des Prez was a Renaissance composer from the Netherlands. Perez was a leading composer of the Renaissance bravura of polyphonic vocal music. The second musical item that I discovered was a Violin once used by Arcangelo Corelli. Corelli was an Italian violinist and composer in the Baroque era. Corelli played second violin to the legendary Carlo Mannelli at the San Luigi dei......

Renaissance Time Capsule

...Renaissance Time Capsule Rodney A. Mathis HUM/102 June 2, 2014 Dr. Julie Kares Renaissance Time Capsule As part of my introduction to humanities class, I was required to probe for a concealed time capsule from both the Renaissance and the Baroque ages. Thereafter, I was required to identify at least two examples of art, music, architecture, philosophy, and literature depicted during the periods. By doing so, I expected to identify how these examples reflected world events and cultural blueprints of their periods. The Renaissance refers to the cultural transformations witnessed in Europe between the fourteen-century and the sixteen-century (Cheremeteff, 2000). The transformations originated in Italy before spreading to the other parts of Europe. Owing to the transformations, Europe came out of the economic crisis experienced during the middle ages. As such, the period was marked by robust financial growth. Similarly, the period saw changes in art, music, architecture, philosophy, and literature. On the other hand, the Baroque refers to the cultural style witnessed in Europe between the 17th century and the mid 18th century (Cheremeteff, 2000). The style was depicted by the use of overstated motion and interpreted features to create stage shows, tension, enthusiasm, and sumptuousness from monuments, work of arts, literature, and songs. Detailed below is what I expect to unravel from the two time capsules. Art From the Renaissance period, I expect to find the Last......

...acquisitions, including a practice known as "spring-loading." In "spring-loading," the pre-acquisition earnings of an acquired company are underreported, giving the merged company the appearance of an earnings boost afterwards. The investigation ended with the SEC deciding to take no action. In January 2002, the accuracy of Tyco's bookkeeping and accounting again came under question after a tip drew attention to a $20 million payment made to Tyco director Frank Walsh, Jr. That payment was later explained as a finder's fee for the Tyco acquisition of CIT. In June 2002, Kozlowski was being investigated for tax evasion because he failed to pay sales tax on $13 million in artwork that he had purchased in New York with company funds. At the same time, Kozlowski resigned from Tyco "for personal reasons" and was replaced by John Fort. By September of 2002, all three (Kozlowski, Swartz, and Belnick) were gone and charges were filed against them for failure to disclose information on their multimillion dollar loans to shareholders. The SEC asked Kozlowski, Swartz, and Belnick to restore the funds that they took from Tyco in the form of undisclosed loans and compensations. Where Are They Now? Kozlowski and Swartz were found guilty in 2005 of taking bonuses worth more than $120 million without the approval of Tyco's directors, abusing an employee loan program, and misrepresenting the company's financial condition to investors to boost the stock price, while selling $575 million......

A Time for Choosing Rhetorical Paper

...Description of “A Time for Choosing” By Zachary Riggan Ronald Regan’s “A Time for Choosing” campaign speech for Republic President Nominee Barry Goldwater was aired on 27 October 1964. This speech was actually given a few weeks prior at a fundraiser in Coconut Grove in Los Angeles. After the speech Mr. Regan was approached by “a delegation of high-powered Republicans” and asked to record that same speech on national TV. This speech raised 8 million dollars for the Barry Goldwater campaign. This speech was also the launching pad for Ronald Regan’s political spotlight. According to President Regan, he never gave this speech a title. A brief history of President Regan is important to the description of this artifact. President Regan was born on February 6, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois. He attended Eureka College, there he studied economics and sociology. President Regan was a known actor and appeared in a total of 53 films during his career. In 1966 he was elected Governor of California and re-elected in 1970. On January 20, 1981 Regan became President of the United States overwhelmingly defeating President Crater 489 electoral votes to 49. On March 30, 1981 just 69 days into his presidency President Regan was shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr. During his first presidency, Regan focused on stimulating economic growth and sought to curb inflation. During his second term Regan focused on foreign policy and to achieve “peace through strength.” The 1960’s were...

...reduced the deaths via disease, whereas water supply to all denizens could have reduced dehydration sickness and improved the overal morale of the public as well as their personal health. 1855 through 1950's birth rate grew from exponential in stature to diminished gradually due to the educational opportunities provided to women at the time. Contraceptive methods were relatively devoid at the time and sex education was demonized by public morality just as female education was limited and impeded by public ideals, making the birth rates rather slow to fall. (E): During the 1980's, the emergence of a serious immune system disease known as AIDS began to run to among the denizens of the US. Along with it came increased mortality rates, albeit not drastic rises in death, but apparent none-the-less. AIDs caused quite a stir in the population due to the fact that it exposed weakness in the human body to other diseases, such as influenza, which would then come to kill them. So in a sense, it was as if AIDS opened a window for other diseases to be let in, which would then cause a small spike in the mortality rate in the 1980's. 2: (C): It is many times more efficient to produce grain for anthropogenic needs than it is to produce meat for human consumption due to the fact that that meat isn't as easy to produce as grain is, which can be amplified into mass-consumption, whereas cattle and other organisms subjected to consumption may overgraze. Grain also provides more energy, as......

...Time Capsule Assignment Stephanie Sorrell Humanities 102 March 7, 2016 Joan Canby Time Capsule Assignment As part of my very first humanities class, I was asked to dig up a time capsule that had been buried with items from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods of time. I did indeed find this time capsule, but there were way too many things in there to tell you about it all. With that being said, I will pick two from a few different categories and discuss those. This means I will be writing on two pieces art, music, architecture, philosophy, and literature. After telling you all about these findings, I am required to tell you how these items reflect world events and cultural patterns of time. The Renaissance refers to the cultural transformations witnessed in Europe between the fourteen-century and the sixteen-century (Cheremeteff, 2000). ...Time Capsule Holly Lara May 1, 2012 HU300: Arts and Humanities: 20th Century and Beyond Prof: Ellie Schamber My Day-to-Day Life My name is Holly Lara and I am married and have four kids, two of which are my step kids. During the day I clean my house and make breakfast lunch and dinner for my family. I like to go to the mall at times to shop and to take my kids to the park. I try not to let things in life stress me out, though sometimes it can be hard with so many expenses. At night I am a bartender, I love my job very much. I love to sing and play around with music on my spare time and even teach my kids how to play instruments. I think music is a big part of our world in the 21st century. I personally like living in the 21st century with the new technology that come in every few months. I don’t think I could have lived in a previous century where there was no technology invented. I do wish that we lived in a healthier environment though. There is too much pollution in the air and way too much littering everywhere. In the future I would like to own a house for my family, somewhere where I can have my kids visit me and bring my grandkids to. I want a huge backyard for them to play in. I would also like a plan to be made to make our environment cleaner, so it will be a safer environment for my kids and grandkids. Morality and Decision-Making The biggest morality question today and probably will be on-going for many centuries to come is should abortion be allowed...
