I Read It but I Don't Get It

...I read it but I don’t get it[1] The title of my article is a title of a book by Cris Tovani but more of that later! I want to explore why I feel that Ken Rowe’s literacy report misses the complexity of literacy development in young people– at least from my secondary perspective. Of course he covers some bases and on the surface suggests a balanced approach. He is also right that teachers need to be better educated about reading practices. However, the emphasis on phonics which has been widely reported in the media appears disproportionate to its usefulness. Some students can manage to read and spell without phonics so why do we need to occupy their brains with phonemes or phonic practices. Others need them. The informed primary teacher differentiates accordingly. What Ken Rowe does not focus on is the literacy needs of young people in secondary schools where decoding is less of a problem than comprehension. For many students reading is meaningless – particularly fiction. The Four Resource Model of Allan Luke and Peter Freebody[2] outlines what students need to do as they read: Effective literacy draws on a repertoire of practices that allow learners, as they engage in reading and writing activities, to: • break the code of texts: recognising and using the fundamental features and architecture of written texts including: alphabet, sounds in words, spelling, conventions and patterns of sentence structure and text • participate in the......

...PRINCIPALS OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNCATION INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Adjust your speech for your audience: A specific audience will appreciate the use of jargons and acronyms. This means that it would be good to use the slangs and terms the specific audience uses. For example when talking to a group of teenagers using their type of lingo could make them more interested in what you are saying. Don’t use one tone the entire speech: It makes you sound very dry, dull, and boring. It makes you a much better speaker when you raise your voice a bit here and there. When you are talking and you get to an important part or you want the audience to remember a word or a phrase or you want to make emphasis on something. Lip Reading: When someone is speaking and you cannot understand what this individual is saying, you could try and read his lips. Lip reading is a very effective form of communication for deaf people or those that are hard of hearing. They try to make sense of what the speaker is saying by the movements of their mouths. When speaking to someone that is using lip reading it is important that nothing is obstructing their view of the speakers mouth, as they can miss key information. CUES IN VERBAL EXCHANGE Be mindful of nonverbal cues: these are ways of communication without talking these include; posture, body language, hand gestures, facial expression etc. if you notice that someone you are communication with folds their arms and is frowning their face this means that the......

...A Fox’s Tale (Tail) One day a fox was out on a walk, following the same trail that she had once followed when she was just a pup. While walking through the dense woods, it became more and more difficult for her to see where she was stepping. All of a sudden she heard a snap, followed by her own whimpering. Her beautiful tail had been caught in a bear trap. It was only after a tough struggle that she was freed. Although she was no longer trapped, she was still filled with sorrow. Her tail had been cut off and left in the trap. “Oh, how ugly I do indeed look!” Cried the fox, “won’t the other foxes laugh at me?” After racking her brain for quite some time, the fox constructed a plan to prevent being laughed at. Soon after that she called a meeting among her friends and said, “Friends! Have you ever wondered why, after all of the trouble it causes us, we carry these long bushy tails? Let us get rid of them and be free from their nuisance.” To the grief of the fox who was missing her tail, her friends had noticed just that, she was already missing her tail. They laughed aloud and replied, “You used to say that tails looked just fine when your own was okay- and still intact. Now that you’ve lost yours, you want us to lose ours too.” Just as this fox’s friends did, you should always evaluate people's intentions; they may wish to drag you down in order to make themselves feel better....

...and provide customers what they need, when they need it, where they need it. What are some different ways that a convenience store supply chain can be responsive? What are some risks in each case? A convenience store can be more responsive by doing exactly what Seven-Eleven Japan is doing; many locations, rapid replenishment, appropriate technology deployment, and an equally responsive supplier (vertical integration for many of their SKUs). The risks associated with this system are the costs coupled with demand uncertainty. If demand patterns change dramatically, or the customer base changes, then Seven-Eleven is left with an operation that is not needed. In Seven-Eleven Japan’s case, multiple operations might be shuttered if an apartment building or large employer shuts down or relocates. 2. Seven-Eleven’s supply chain strategy in Japan can be described as attempting to micro-match supply and demand using rapid replenishment. What are some risks associated with this choice? Micro-matching supply and demand using rapid replenishment assumes that each store will repeat the same demand pattern on a daily basis. The tour bus phenomenon, where a group of unanticipated customers comes to the store and buys all of a type of product will cause difficulty for regular customers. During such an event, the store will likely stock out and customers may visit the next Seven-Eleven site down the block to make their purchases. Some of this demand may permanently......

Answer for Some in a Teachers' Manual

...Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMICS A TEACHERS’ MANUAL Undergraduate Level By Herminia A. Francisco Bui Dung The Pham Khanh Nam August 2005 1 PREFACE This manual was written to support the teaching of undergraduate environmental economics course in Vietnam Universities. Some time in 2003, a number of senior researchers of the Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA) requested that EEPSEA offers a 3-week training course for teachers of Environmental Economics in the country. The request in turn was precipitated by the new mandate from the Ministry of Education in Vietnam that makes Environmental Economics a required course in all Bachelors’ Degree in Economics and Management for all colleges and universities. Aware that the capacity of teachers to teach Environmental Economics varies across the country as training of teachers varies also from selfstudy, short-term training, to a formal course in an undergraduate/graduate degree from local universities or abroad, EEPSEA acceded to the request and offered the course in August 2005. The course though can be used also in other colleges and universities in Southeast Asia. The training course was designed to teach both the subject matter contained in an internationally-comparable undergraduate environmental course and to enhance teachers’ skills in teaching this subject. A teachers’ manual was developed to support the teaching of the......

...Andreas Balasis 4/25/15 Mark Zeigler Persuasive Essay 1 “According to news reporters, every year it’s getting warmer, these violent weather patterns, some say it’s just nature’s karma.” These lyrics from Tallahassee’s own, Dead Prez, go to show the immutable fact that “global warming” is applicable terminology for our current state of existence. I believe it is beyond our intellectual capacity to examine whether or not the weather is changing, because any rational person could do the research and understand that it is quite apparent. If Dead Prez isn’t credible enough, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, “Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal”. The only thing I can conceivable try to persuade people of, is that we are living within system a being ran by incomprehensibly short sighted and perceivably destructive people. This essay will examine the idiocracy of Republican leaders in Florida, the economic manipulation behind environmental destruction, and simple solutions to a simple problem. “I’m not scientist, man”. These are the words of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) He is also quoted saying, “I do not believe that human activity is causing the dramatic changes to our climate the way scientists are portraying it”. I think that’s pretty hysterical, given the fact that this man, who is not a scientist, was appointed a chair on the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard. Get Some Get Up and Go About Ya!

...potatoe pie, with the flakiest buttery crust. When I see sweet potatoes I think of her pie and her wisdom. "Have some get up and go about ya." This is a snippet from my past, my Grandma Callie would say this to me when I would sit back and feel sorry for myself. Why me, what about me, I can laugh about it now but this was the way I thought, always being the victim. You may know a person like that. This sort of person does not want to take responsibility for their life and wants to hold other people responsible for their mistakes. I did not come from the best home but it was not all bad. One thing I learned was perserverance and to take moments to get away to think. I would runaway to my Grandma's house and stay with her for a few days. I find that a lot of times when you are pressed for time that is when you make bad decisions. People who appear strong, self reliant are the usually people we all go to when we have problems. I appear to be one of those people but I did not get that way overnight. These people are the caregivers in society and this is a form of charity. Now I am at a point in my life where I am a social worker. Why did I not go to school and pursue a degree in this field because I am great at it. I find myself calling for people being their advocate, making complaints and giving support. This is something I love and I believe I am good at it because I want good for people like I want for myself. How many people can honestly say this when we live in a society......
