Integrated and Collaborative Working within Childhood Practice
Introduction
In this Essay I will discuss how integrated and collaborative working is a better approach in Childhood Practice than previous approaches which were fragmented. This fragmentation created a system where unnecessary cost and bureaucracy was incurred as agencies worked in isolation. This can lead to policies and procedures not being followed to the required standard expected within childcare practice. I will discuss the advantages and barriers to collaborative and integrated working and will identify how I believe this approach works well in my workplace.
Main Body
Integrated and Collaborative working within childhood practice is vital and it is imperative that all agencies are working together. This approach will prevent any loopholes or local arrangements developing and results in non-conformance with policies and procedures and leads to a disjointed system occurring which ultimately may result in Child poverty, Inequality, Social Exclusion, Educational Underachievement and Poor Health & Well Being.
The Advantages of Collaborative working is that all staff implements a “Holistic Approach” with the child and families concerned to ensure that their needs are being met and enables adherence to the appropriate guidelines, policies and procedures from Inverclyde Council, Care Inspectorate and HIME. In Kenya, he said, everyone is very community-focused; but people from the United States function as completely separate individuals. Bella described how he and his Kenyan friends get together frequently for an entire day to cook, talk, and watch the women braid each other’s hair. One definition is: activities involved in the production of a document by more than one author, then pre-draft discussions and arguments as well as post-draft analyses and debates are collaborative components. [1] Based on this definition, the collaborative authoring process includes the writing activity as well as group dynamics. Another definition is "...any piece of writing, published or unpublished, ascribed or anonymous, to which more than one person has contributed, whether or not they grasped a pen, tapped a keyboard, or shuffled a mouse." [61] This definition alludes to the complexity of identifying and acknowledging contributions and their contributors. With collaborative authoring, there is a meshing of the complexity of (technical) writing along with the challenges of collaboration. Given that writing is a complex , open-ended task, there are many ways of stating meaning. With multiple authors, this adds to the complexity. The acts of collaboration and writing as they relate to collaborative authoring include: establishing an agenda or goal of the collaboration effort, identifying writing tasks and dividing those tasks among group members, tracking individual idea generation, defining rules for document management, identifying roles for group members, communicating ideas, and managing conflict. Page 1 Page 2 Collaborative writing, or writing in groups, is a method of writing that can achieve results faster and more efficiently than writing independently. Our team interviewed several professionals to gather their perspective on writing in a group environment. We were able to obtain the pros and cons of writing in a group as well as some advice to those new to the process. Our results are presented this report, which is itself an example of collaborative writing.   The method of research conducted by this team involved nine individual interviews where we asked specific questions regarding collaborative writing. The research was done via telephone, email, or face to face over a one-week period. Our first group of questions dealt with what the interviewee did and how writing fit into their work - whether it was formal, casual, or both. We also touched on how many people they worked with and if those people did any of the revising.   Secondly, if the interviewees were leaders, for whichever reason, what did they do to ensure the project ran smoothly? This group tried to find answers in how to manage conflicting ideas in a way that ensured the project was done well and on time. However it was noted that “nurses working in receptive environments more amenable to the use of EBNP in terms of individual and organisational attitudes” (Fawcett, 1984). In comparison to Fawcett’s article, the concepts from Newman’s system that relate the most to environment are patterning and mutual process. Patterning is defined as the evolving configuration of the relationship. Using patterning, nurses are able to assess different interactions between the patient and their environment; to tailor specifically-focused and culturally-sensitive nursing interventions in order to provide better care. In contrast to the traditional metaparadigm, Newman’s system looks to assess the environment, instead of changing it to enhance the relational capacity of the nurse to provide patient care. The second concept that relates to environment is mutual process. The nurse is able to promote mutual process by being self-aware and assisting the patient to do the same. “Nurses are central to creating an environment that fosters relationship and health” (Newman, Smith, Pharris, & Jones, (2008). Collaborative means united, combined, shared and so by saying collaborative practice it means working together as a team, not just nurses, but the whole multi-disciplinary team all working together to achieve the best possible outcome for the individual person/patient as their goal. Many of us here today may already have an idea or good understanding of what some of the other health professions do. To care /help the individual person/patient to the best of our abilities, providing the highest standard of care is of course the common aim we all share, but what do we really know about the other health professional teams?, From the GP surgeries, to the hospitals, community care and nursing homes. For example; I always thought of occupational therapists as the tea + sympathy brigade with maybe a game of scrabble or some knitting thrown in? Obviously I had no idea!!! I now know and understand that they are at the heart of patient rehabilitation long after the client has been discharged from hospital, devising and implementing individual therapy programmes for all in their care ( children, adults, elderly ), in order to promote, help regain or maintain health and well-being for the individual person/patient.
