Japanese people appear at first glance to be one of the most socially and ethnically homogenous groups in the world. It is reasonable to equate Japan’s rapid post-war economic development to the 1990s with social solidarity and conformism. Despite labour shortages since the 1960s, authorities resisted officially sanctioning foreign workers until the 1980s, relying on increased mechanization and an expanded female workforce instead (1).  Until recently, Japanese workers have associated themselves primarily with the company they work for – a businessman will introduce himself as ‘Nissan no Takahashi-san’ (I am Nissan’s Mr Takahashi). By extension, we might get the idea that a Japanese person subordinates the self to the objectives of society. In 2008, however, long-serving Japanese politician Nariaki Nakayama resigned after declaring that Japan is ‘ethnically homogenous’, showing that the old ‘one people, one race’ idea has become politically incorrect. Criticism of Mr Nakayama’s statement focused on its disregard for the indigenous Ryukyukan people of southern Okinawa, and the Ainu people from the north island of Hokkaido colonised by the Japanese in the late nineteenth century. The primary goal of the study was to increase awareness of the areas in which the owners or managers of Thai restaurants in the U.S. could be further improved. This case study utilized the qualitative research methodology. All of interviewees are owners or managers of Thai restaurant in the U.S., a total of 10 participated in the study consisting of 9 owners and 1 manager. Data for the study was collected from various evidences gathered by systematic interview, direct observation, and participant observation. Little Tokyo proved to be quite the opposite, as I was able to ascertain a much deeper understanding of the Japanese culture because of it, and at the same time was able to reflect on the differences and similarities of my Filipino heritage. From what I was able to gather, the Japanese and Filipino cultures have quite a few significant differences, but have more similarities than I originally anticipated. As the name would suggest, Little Tokyo is fairly little, with its borders spanning a radius of only a few blocks. Walking from one end of the town to the other took no more than five minutes. That afternoon, we started our trip right in the middle of all the activity, into the mouth of a little alley known as the Japanese Village Plaza. People were walking in and out of cosmetic stores, bakeries, bars, gift shops, a brightly lit Sanrio store, cafes, a market, and a number of restaurants serving sushi, shabu shabu, ramen, even Korean barbeque. Many of these shops were playing traditional Japanese music, and interestingly, almost all of the employees that worked in these shops were women. The same could be said about the restaurants, as many of the servers were also women. The chefs on the other hand were all men, which may be one aspect of gender roles in the neighborhood. Maybe the cultural decorations? Or perhaps the strong aroma of sushi and other great Japanese foods being prepared in the kitchen? Or maybe even some fun live entertainment? Whatever a certain Japanese restaurant has to offer, it should provide the customers with complete satisfaction. Kabuki Japanese restaurant does an adequate job of giving the customers a true feel for a Japanese like environment. Kabuki is a Japanese restaurant that is located on Riverpark, Boulevard in Oxnard, California in the new shopping center known by many now as “The Collection”. This food chain has been around since 1991 and it has continued to grow in the western United States. As you walk into the restaurant you will notice a very modern feel to the place with a few chandeliers and the large glass windows spread throughout the restaurant. Along with the restaurant being modern it also has some traditional Japanese touches such as the art, the classic Japanese style lamps, the fire, and even the music playing. The seating of the restaurant is in a fashion of multiple tables lined up evenly and it has a long bar table in the back for those twenty one and over. However, it is not as hierarchical as most of the other Asian cultures. Some foreigners experience Japan as extremely hierarchical because of their business experience of painstakingly slow decision making process: all the decisions must be confirmed by each hierarchical layer and finally by the top management in Tokyo. Paradoxically, the exact example of their slow decision making process shows that in Japanese society there is no one top guy who can take decision like in more hierarchical societies. Another example of not so high power distance is that Japan has always been a meritocratic society. There is a strong notion in the Japanese education system that everybody is born equal and anyone can get ahead and become anything if he (yes, it is still he) works hard enough. Individualism The fundamental issue addressed by this dimension is the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members.It has to do with whether people´s self-image is defined in terms of “I” or “We”.In Individualist societies people are supposed to look after themselves and their direct family only. ...Things we can learn from the Japanese: 1. Honesty * The single most important thing we could learn from the Japanese people is honesty. Very little theft occurs in Japan and for the most part, most lost items are either always returned to their rightful owners or brought to police stations where said items could be claimed. Only 6.6 bikes are stolen for every 100,000 people in Japan. In wake of the tsunami and past catastrophic events you see that the people of Japan were not looting. Instead they were helping each other out in finding their belongings instead of taking advantage of other individuals, unlike what we’ve seen here in the United States after Hurricane Katrina. 2. Indebtedness * Japanese parents give so much to their children when they raise them. For giving life to the child and nurturing them, the child is indebted to their parents, and does whatever it takes to please them. A lot of Americans take what their parents have done for them for granted. I know I don’t, but many do. I wish more of my peers fully appreciate the many sacrifices that were made to fulfill their wants and needs. My siblings and I have been a financial burden on my parents and I see their struggle to this day, but I have high hopes of making it up to them once I attain my degree and provide for them so that they can retire. 3. Translated, Bushido means “Way of the Warrior” and so it can be defined as a type of code of conduct for samurai. Besides being simply a code applied to Japanese samurai alone, Bushido has also been said to be an integral element in the fabric of Japanese culture and society. Although there is no formalized official written document specifically stating what Bushido is, it remains an entity that has become the quintessential element of Japanese society. Of all the interpretations on what Bushido is, two of the most popular are the Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo and Bushido, the Soul of Japan by Inazo Nitobe. However, both of these writings are influenced by the time period in which they were written, and experiences of their respective authors. By evaluating certain influences on the interpretations of Bushido and the contradictions in them one is able to see how each is using their own version of Bushido to justify the author’s position or achieve a certain end.
