Lyons Case

...Introduction The Lyons Document Storage Corporation was a family business established in 1993. It faced up to a recession due to the growth of its competitors in 1990s. Thus, the company started to issue bonds on July 2nd 1999 to fund its growth. However, currently, in year 2008, the company is considering issuing a new bond to replace the old bond and the purpose of this case is to analyze both the old and new bonds as well as their impacts to the company. Also, the choice would be made between those two bonds under a certain market interest rate. Part I: Analysis of the old bond Currently, Lyons Document Storage Corporation is suffering a long term debt which includes the bond being issued on July 2, 1999 and would be due on July 2, 2019. Interest is payable semiannually on January 2 and July 2 but the company only received 9.1M in cash with regard to the bond face value of 10million. When a bond is issued, the difference between the amount of money the borrower actually received and the face value of the bond is called either the “premium” or “discount”. Premium bonds are the bonds sold at a price higher than the bonds face value while the discounted bounds are referring to the amount received less than the face amount. The bond would be sold at a premium if the current market rate of interest is less than the coupon offered. If the yield rate is greater than the bond rate, a discounted bond would be issued. Thus, the discount of the bond for the company would be......

A quote from the historian Fernand Braudel has the wealth and complexity of the history of Lyon: "The fate of Lyon is not simpler than the river. Every city, no doubt, is to be complicated, Lyon more than another, that strikes the historian by his wealth, his sudden transformations, its originality or its strangeness. William Lyon Mackenzie King

...William Lyon Mackenzie King William Lyon Mackenzie King was the leading Canadian politician beginning in the early 1920’s till 1940’s – he was elected as the 10th Prime Minister of Canada in the year 1921 for a five year term that ended in the year 1926 and again for the following term from 1926 to 1930. After absence from office for the subsequent political term, he again held the office of the chief executive from the year 1935 till 1948. Best described politically as a Liberal, he has had twenty-two years’ worth of experience in public office and is recognized as the premier having served the longest term in the history of the country. Taught and trained in social work and as a lawyer, he displayed a strong curiosity towards the condition of humans, ultimately playing a key part in establishing the groundwork for turning Canada into a welfare state (Welfare State, The Canadian Encyclopedia). As stated by historians and his personal biographers, Mackenzie was short of the emblematic personal qualities of prodigious frontrunners, particularly when compared with the likes of Charles de Gaulle of France, Winston Churchill and Margret Thatcher of England, Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States of America or even lesser known personalities like Joey Smallwood of Newfoundland – the masses were not enthralled by him. He did not possess a forceful presence or a charismatic personality. He lacked the necessary rhetorical talent and failed to stand out on the media of his time...

...Abstract: “To solve the problem of time-cost tradeoff in project management with available models, a choice must be made between heuristic approaches and algorithms based upon restrictive assumptions about the shape of the cost-time functions of the activities. The algorithm presented in this article involves a dynamic-programming approach to determine the allocation which minimizes the duration of the project (critical path). The main advantage of this model is its ability to determine the optimum allocation among activities with arbitrary cost-time functions. Also, computational shortcuts for functions with special properties can be used to increase the efficiency of the model” (Don Robinson 158-166). Programming solutions . Developers who program for any project has multiple requirements to be met. The key is understanding the problem to be familiar with the business. A visionary understanding the management of the business. Then a visual plan must be drawn with a step by step process to understand the goals of the company. It is easy to do this if you are the owner of the company and it is difficult to bring it to the IT/developer of the company. I have experienced this personally via my small business even though I tried desperately to bring my ideas, there was always a gap bringing the need and the vision. IF we discuss the need, we had to set multiple meetings where the developer had researched the system and saw the flaws with his own ideas on how to improve it.......

Lyons Case

...Lyons Document Storage Corporation 1) Prior to maturity, a bond may be selling at either the face value or at an amount lesser than or greater than the face value. Bonds that sell at a price greater than the face value are said to be at a premium. Discount bonds sell at a price lesser than face value. The price at issue depends on the yield required by investors and the coupon offered by the bond. If yield required is greater than coupon offered, then the bonds will have to be issued at a discount to face value. If yield required is lesser, the bonds can be issued at premium. Regardless of required yield, the bond price will approach face value as the bond approaches maturity. - Cash received by Lyons from 8% bond issue (refer excel sheet):10,000 bonds @ PV = $9,079,920.78 (40 periods, 4.5%, $400,000 payment, $10,000,000 FV) - Recomputed amounts from balance sheet for 2006, 2007: $9,258,589.55 & $9,292,611.26 Recalculating the amounts for long term debt (at 6% effective rate) shown in the balance sheet 2007($) Bonds Payable Less: premium 10,000,000 2006($) 10,000,000 1,741,314,77 11,741,314,77 Unamortized 1,644,360.84 11,644,360.84 Carrying Value Current market value of bonds outstanding at current interest rate of 6%: $ 11,541,502.41 (10000 bonds) in Dec 2008. ..."I am a student at the University of Kansas studying English and American Studies, and this may be a bit unorthodox, but I wanted to say that your book Writing Essays About Literature was one of the best books I have ever read in the world of academia! I am taking a Critical Theory class, and we were assigned only the first 55 pages, but I really could not put the book down. Your writing is magnificent, and I am constantly referring to the book when writing papers. You have done a brilliant job making essay-writing easy, structured, and actually enjoyable!" - Lauren Gaylor, University of Kansas "Katherine O. Acheson's Writing Essays About Literature is a concise, fully portable and very well-priced guide that gets it right. Acheson's emphasis on inductive reasoning is wonderfully refreshing. It really helps English professors persuade their students to argue from the specific to the general, to found their arguments on the details of evidence and on the careful—and affectively sensitive—analysis of that evidence. And the very best thing about this book is that Acheson's casual and unassuming prose style makes students want to read it. And they do. And then they bring it to class!" - Glenn Clark, University of Manitoba "For those of us interested in teaching writing through literature, Katherine O. Acheson's guide is an indispensable companion, teaching students that writing is more about process and less about imagined giftedness. The book begins by teaching students how...

Lyons Document Storage Corporation: Bond Accounting

...For exclusive use at University of Pennsylvania, 2015 3215 REV: JUNE 21, 2010 WILLIAM J. BRUNS Lyons Document Storage Corporation: Bond Accounting In December 2008 Rene Cook sat in her cubicle trying to remember what she had learned in business school about bonds and bond accounting. Ms. Cook, a new MBA and special assistant in a training assignment with the company president, had just met with David Lyons, president of Lyons Document Storage Corporation. He had asked her to think about the possible consequences of repurchasing company bonds outstanding using cash that he felt could be obtained by issuing new bonds with a lower interest rate. Mr. Lyons had asked Rene to focus on how much the company's annual interest payments could be reduced, how reported earnings would be affected, and how the refunding would change the company's financial position as referenced on the balance sheet, if at all. The Company The Lyons Company was a family business in the stationary supply business until the document storage opportunity appeared in the early 1990s. Lyons Document Storage Corporation was incorporated in 1993 to compete in the emerging and rapidly growing industry that provides secure, off-site storage of documents for other corporate customers. The demand for storage was fueled by the need for corporations to retain records of sales contracts, employment records, compliance records, and other documents. The convenience of secure storage and easy recovery in......

The knowledge and skills provided by both undergraduate degrees is highly valued by a range of other employers. Many of our outstanding graduates choose different careers despite the strong demand for actuaries and financial analysts and the high salaries currently on offer. * Why study at UCT? UCT was the first University in Africa to set up a course to produce qualified actuaries. The old adage that success breeds success is clearly appropriate. Our strong past record of success at producing qualified actuaries has allowed the department to attract the best students and staff with relevant professional qualifications and experience. UCT has produced more qualified actuaries than any other university in Africa and our analysis of performance in the professional examinations indicates that our graduates are more likely to qualify than those from other courses in South Africa. Students within the actuarial program are often able to obtain bursaries from employers especially after they establish a good track record in our examinations. We recommend that students apply for financial aid (and accommodation) well in advance of the closing dates even if they are not sure that they will need it. * Students from previously disadvantaged communities At present the overwhelming majority of actuaries and financial analysts are white males. ......
