Truly our lifestyle has changed along with the changes in technology. People’s hobbies have changed as well, this is greatly seen in the growing population of what we could call otakus. In the Western part of the world, this term refers to the people who are fans of anime and manga. In Japan, however, this term is somewhat considered as a negative way of labeling someone. For......

...prints. These would eventually contribute to the development of the modern Japanese comic book or "manga" In 1914, cartoonists were among the first Japanese artists to experiment with animated motion pictures. Japan's first world-wide success was Kitayama Seitaro's short film Momotaro(1918). Although the Japanese animation industry continued to grow slowly, its one, last pre-war milestone was Chikara To Onna No Yononaka. Appearing in 1932, the short film was the first animated "talkie" in Japanese. Elswhere in the world, the animation industry was not only thriving but breaking new ground. The undisputed leaders in the field were Walt Disney and the Fleisher Brothers. People now forgot what a shock it was for Disney to even consider producing a full-length animated feature. But, when Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs appeared in 1937 to overwhelming popular acclaim, Disney demonstrated that animation could be just as expressive and viable a medium as live-action film. The popularity and influence of Disney and the Fleishers' animated films were not limited to the United States. Before World War II, much of their work was seen by receptive audiences in Europe and Asia. These works also inspired the dreams of a young man who would go on to alter the direction of Japanese graphic story-telling forever. The God As unbelievable as it may seem, the success of both the anime and manga industries in Japan rests firmly on the shoulders of one man: Osamu Tezuka Originally an......

Manga and Its Origin

...Manga are Japanese comic books. Manga is often made into Japanese cartoons, or Anime. The art in Manga has a very definite look to it and is often referred to as “Manga Style.” Manga after it’s first international publish, has became the finest and the easiest comics to read in term of entertainment and knowledge. Derived from Manga, Anime is Japanese term for animated films that refers to Japanese animation. Artistically, anime are known for their use of color, their textured and detailed backgrounds and foregrounds, and their complex camera points of view, which approximate those of acted films. Story lines tend to be complex, and many anime appear as long series of episodes, with a multitude of characters and subplots. The word Manga can be translated as, “humorous pictures.” Manga became very popular in the 20th century since it has become a huge part of Japanese culture. Unlike in America, Manga is read by most people in the country. The artists and writer of Manga are well respected for their work, much like the writers of literature in America. There are many characteristics that make Manga very distinctive. The largest thing that Manga art is known for is its characters. Manga characters almost always have large eyes, small mouths, and they also usually have abnormal hair color. These things give their characters a very western look to them. After the domination of Manga since it’s first publish in Western media, many older generations have concerned......

Viz Media - Marketing Proposal

...addressing the issue of online piracy and fan culture. The proposal summarizes the recent manga industry, problems faced by it and current issues regarding Viz Media, LLC. Research has been conducted to support the proposed solutions. From experience in the media field, I have seen a need for Viz Media to address the issue of piracy and technological advances. For this purpose, I have compiled research entailing industry details, practices of other companies, supporting facts regarding my solutions and benefits that come with implementing my solution. These benefits may put Viz Media in a superior position to its competitors and addresses the issues of the 21st century. Sincerely, Enclosure: Marketing Proposal Executive Summary Viz Media, LLC.’s sales are not meeting their full potential as internet piracy increases. With the increase in popularity for manga, so does fan culture. Fan culture includes but not limited to fan-art, fan-stories and manga scanlations. Manga scanlations are the unauthorized translation and distribution of manga. The purpose of my proposal is to address this unauthorized transaction. My research has led me to conclude: The manga industry is still growing, with yearly increases exceeding thirty percent. A rise in manga scanlation groups and free online manga-content hosting websites are hindering the industry growth. Manga piracy has been addressed before in foreign countries that may also apply to North......

Bint- Usman Dedication I would like to dedicate this research to my adviser, teacher Monie. And to all of the people who inspired me, especially my parents for their support and to God for giving me enough knowledge to make this study successful. Acknowledgement Abstract This research explores more about the history of the two Mathematicians and how did they invent calculus with the same idea. This is a study about a controversy in Mathematics where Sir Isaac and Gottfried von Leibniz were involved. It tackles about who was the real father of calculus and who gets the credit of inventing it. Inside this paper, the researcher will also discuss a brief summary about Calculus, and short biography of the Mathematicians that were involved in this matter. Many people debates about this matter and we will also tackle some of it in this study. Introduction: So who really invented calculus first? Was it Sir Isaac Newton or Gottfried von Leibniz? Well let's do some investigation. There is no doubt about it that Newton and Leibniz made great mathematical breakthroughs but even before they began studying Calculus there were other people such as Archimedes and Euclid who discovered the infinite and infinitesimal. Much of Newton and Leibniz's......

...audiences and consequently, a given series may have aspects of a range of genres. Anime is most frequently broadcasted on television or sold on DVDs either after their broadcast run or directly as original video animation. Console and computer games sometimes also feature segments or scenes that can be considered anime. Manga is Japanese for "comics" or "whimsical images". Manga developed from a mixture of Ukiyo-e and Western styles of drawing, and took its current form shortly after World War II. Manga, apart from covers, is usually published in black and white but it is common to find introductions to chapters to be in color, and is read from top to bottom and then right to left, similar to the layout of a Japanese plain text. Financially, manga represented in 2005 a market of ¥24 billion in Japan and one of $180 million in the United States. Manga was the fastest growing segment of books in the United States in 2005. Anime and manga share many characteristics, including: exaggerating of physical features, to which the reader presumably should pay most attention, "dramatically shaped speech bubbles, speed lines and onomatopoeic, exclamatory typography..." Some manga, a small amount of the total output, is adapted into anime, often with the collaboration of the original author. Computer games can also give rise to anime. In such cases, the stories are often compressed and modified to fit the format and appeal to a wider market. Popular anime franchises sometimes......

Essay on Manga

...Introduction Management refers to the process through which activities in an organization are co-ordinated and controlled in order to achieve the goals and aspirations of the organization. To do so, management requires co-ordination of labor and other available scarce resources as factors of production. The factors of production that are essential in the management process include human resource, time, technology, money and knowledge. Another aspect of management is that it aims at carrying out activities in a manner that is not only effective but efficient as well. Management as a social science can be described as the study of social organizations. This implies the study of the social aspect of any given organization and how it affects achievement of goals in the long run (Newton 12). A key element in management is the decision-making dynamic, which is key and fundamental if any management is to take place effectively. It can, therefore, be stated that management is an art of decision making that decisions influence the operations of an organization towards goal achievement. This report shall highlight effective management in today’s organizations. It shall attempt to discuss and explain one aspect of management in terms of the challenges and problems that are synonymous to that facet of management. I shall also elaborates on how I went about to investigate that facet in the organization. This report shall further give recommendations on how to better improve on that......

...ESSAY #1 From a historical standpoint, just about every culture on the planet has venerated males as dominate figures, while scorning females as the lesser sex. Japan is surely no exception to this method of opinion. Although, ironically male writers paved many of the pioneering days of shojo manga, many female writers emerged and revolutionized the shojo manga market and further gave women within Japanese society who read Shojo manga a sense of exemplification and ‘an air or authenticity’. This was an important mark within Japanese society, because it very closely related to the rise of femininity within Japan, as there were not many female artists before or after the World War. In came the era of the 1970s, and many female artists appeared to express their opinions by manga; their work met the demands of Japanese girls to read manga written from the female point of view. The development of manga had portrayed reality quite well, and sales within these girls’ magazines skyrocketed. As female artists maintained and developed more individuality within their art, Shojo manga in turn depicted the social roles and reduced responsibility that Japanese women had in society. Many of these magazines ‘pushed the envelope’ within society, as many of the relationships created within the stories were doseiai, or same sex romances. The writing and imagery reinforced a “visual of monotony, as many of the characters had similar facial features, and wore identical school uniforms as......

Environmentalism in Manga and Anime

...Environmentalism in Manga and Anime  In Western news stories, Japan and the environment usually only come up together in one form: Japan is ruining the environment. Japan is hunting endangered whales; Japan is overfishing depleted fishing stocks; Japan has walled up the last of its wild rivers; Japan is building up all its wild areas.  All these accusations are, unfortunately, true to some large degree. Even in anime, all too often what we see are images that point to a continuation of the current trend: metal and concrete mega-cities, like those in the anime Dominion, Akira, Gunnm, or in Bubblegum Crisis, or any of the other hard science-fiction worlds. Not a pleasant picture --- and in fact, in those "cyberpunk"-ish stories, the world is not a pleasant place to be in, in general.  But, running through other works is a thread of a different hue. Listen closely, and a different voice is heard --- the voice of dissent, the voice protesting the loss of green spaces and clean waters and open air.  Where has this voice come from? I'm not quite qualified to say for sure, but I can guess. Some of it is obvious: people who are tired of seeing tranquil forests razed, or seeing their favorite beach turned into a concrete nightmare (such as in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan); people who read the news and hear of oil spills and extinctions and pollution problems. But another aspect is surely the traditional sense of Taoism that runs deep in Japanese culture. Taoism was the......

...Ronin—Frank Miller’s Graphic Novel 1. A ronin was a masterless samurai during the feudal period (1185-1868) of Japan. 2. There is a strong influence of the manga style, both in the artwork and narrative style. The manga style is characterised by Japanese comics. ‘Manga’ translated means “irresponsible pictures”. They are considered professional comics in Japan, has roots in 17th century Japan. The painting style of ‘manga’ is less concerned with the minute details and more with entertaining and meaningful connotations. For Frank Miller, the influence of ‘manga’ was predominant through the use of strong emphasis on visuals and character interaction over more plot-oriented pacing that was commonly seen in American comics. Miller incorporated the style into his noir style of graphics in a fusion of manga, noir and the pop culture spectrum—what is called OEL (Original English Language) manga today. The use of exaggerated facial expressions, emphasis on emotional (rather than plot-like) storytelling, and continued development of the characters over the course of the story blur the boundaries between the Japanese comic industry and the English comic industry in format, content, style, storytelling, and origin. 3. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic New York City populated by mutants and impoverished squatters. 4. Billy Challas, born limbless due to a birth defect—the Aquarius Complex “biocircuitry” company has enabled him to become a cyborg ronin. His......

... GRADING AND STUDENT LEARNING At a teacher inservice, a teacher described a problem that probably all of us have encountered. She had developed a curriculum based on the standards, using teaching strategies that promoted intrinsic motivation, creativity, willingness to take risks, a focus on mastery, etc. But all this disappeared when the concern for grades began to dominate shortly before the first grading period. How, she wondered, could she reconcile such a student-centered learning situation with the threat inherent in the traditional practice of grading? This column will describe some teachers’ solutions to the dilemma of maintaining positive classroom climate and productive teaching/learning/assessment strategies along with grading. The Problem with Traditional Grading Ironically, despite grading’s basic problems, teachers and students can become addicted to grades. The teacher mentioned above confided that she felt a real need for the “leverage” afforded by grades. And students quickly learn to ascertain what will count for grades and concentrate on this rather than on mastery itself. Many teachers routinely use grades as external motivators, often based on proxies for learning – points for attendance or worksheets, activities, etc. This is doubly problematic – they don’t deal directly with the Standards’ artistic processes of creating or responding, and the points (and the grade) become the focus of students’ efforts instead of those processes and......
