Reflection: The Sermon On The Mount

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the significance of the Sermon of the Mount and how it relates to me personally. It is important to recognize that the principles underpinning Judaism is not a single belief instead a variety of belief systems. Through my research, I have drawn parallels and differences between Judaism and Christianity with respect to their belief system, and worldview. The paper affirms that Judaism has had a profound influence on the overall lifestyle, social interactions, cultural practices, and the religious history for the Jewish community.

Introduction What does Judaism mean in the life of a Jewish person? In order to properly analyze “Judaism” one must first understand both the origin and the significance of the term Judaism. The term was first used in the intertestamental period by Greek-speaking Jews to distinguish their religion from Hellenism. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Judaism is defined as “a religion developed among the ancient Hebrews and characterized by belief in one transcendent God who has revealed himself to Abraham, Moses, and the Hebrew prophets and by a religious life in accordance with Scriptures and rabbinic traditions.” Simply put, Judaism is the intricate religious and cultural history for the diverse people known as the Jewish community. Judaism plays a significant role and is influential on the cultural holidays, dietary practices, social structure, and entertainment for its followers.

After reading and reflecting on Matthew 5:1-7:29, write a 600-word essay in which you describe your understanding of this sermon and how it applies to you personally.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus covers many topics concerning the life to lead and salvation. In Matthew 5-7, he lays out what will later become the basics of Christianity. Jesus' teachings are very metaphorical and hard to find true meaning. I may be taking some of this too literally but, I found it very hard to follow. This is supposedly Jesus talking, yet he says one thing and then totally shoots it down
…closing, the Sermon on the Mount is a great life lesson for myself and others. I definitely learned a lot from the Sermon because I finally took the time to thoroughly read and understand it. From the Sermon I can clearly understand that it takes good works and kindness towards others in order to receive them back. Based on this lesson, I will now try to live that way for the rest of my life.
Sermon on the Mount is a guide for us to live together in harmony and enjoy the life God has promised us both on earth and beyond. Although the teachings and parables that Jesus delivered seem impossible to live by, most of us in some way live by these guides every day without giving it a second thought. Our society is based on the laws of the Ten Commandments, and is followed even by those who consider themselves atheists. Most of the laws created in our justice system are based on the Ten Commandments. I will show why the Ten Commandments are important and how they affect our everyday life.

Most of us respect and love our parents. We do so unconditionally, not because we’re supposed to. It’s just automatic, but it is the 5th Commandment. Honor Thy Mother and Our Father.

The 6th Commandment, Thy Shalt Not Kill. Although our prisons are filled with murderers, the general population is not killers. We all get angry and sometimes may even lose control, but we don’t kill. Why is that? Is it because we’ve been taught that it is wrong or is it because as human beings we don’t automatically have the instinct to kill when things don’t go our way? Why is it a crime to kill someone? Imagine what our life would be like if it weren’t a crime.
Simple and straightforward, yet endlessly captivating, the Sermon on the Mount is a startling invitation to inhabit an alternative world-where the new creation has come in Jesus himself.
Rather than laying down laws and calling us to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, the Sermon offers "verbal icons through which we may see into God's will and be empowered for the moral life," writes Charles Talbert. Its call for radical obedience is not "for conformity to legitimate external rules, but for the total transformation of a person," Bonnie Thurston agrees. "To be obedient to Jesus is to become as he is, humble and gentle."
Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove calls the Sermon's opening poem, the Beatitudes, the key to living faithfully in a broken world. Shane Claiborne asks how we should make discerning judgments without being judgmental. "Folks are hungry for a Christianity that mirrors Jesus," he notes, "not the judgmentalism that has done more to repel than to woo people towards God's grace."

Introduction
The Sermon on the Mount has held a primary place in the teachings of the church throughout the centuries (11). But, even though it has enjoyed such popularity, it has not always been understood in the same way. Various authors have regarded the Sermon from numerous and even quite different, conflicting points of view.
The point of our discussion is simply to summarize the main teachings of Harvey K. McArthur's book entitled, Understanding the Sermon on the Mount.1 His book has seven major sections, including the prologue and the epilogue. The outline of the paper will follow the outline of the book as I work my way through it, noting what I feel are the most important points for later referral as well as commenting in areas where I feel the author has done an especially good job or in other instances missed the mark.

The Sermon on the Mount is a passage in the Bible that is well known and has been analyzed for numerous centuries. While the Sermon on the Mount has contained the same content throughout time, many people have interpreted this part of Matthew differently. Although there is no right or wrong way in doing so, it is very interesting to compare and contrast these different interpretations to see the commonalities and differences in their analysis. In reading many scholars' interpretations of the Sermon on the Mount and in interviewing someone whose religious knowledge I respect, I have begun to think about how I interpret the Sermon on the Mount and have broadened my knowledge regarding this topic. But before I did these things, consulted a scholar's interpretation and conducted an interview concerning the passage of Matthew 5:38-42, I did some initial preparation using the Trouble Shooting Protocol Sheet so I could understand the content of the text better.
To begin this assignment, I re-read Chapter 5 in the Gospel of Matthew and went through the questions on the Trouble Shooting Protocol Sheet. In trying to answer the questions on this sheet, I analyzed the text thoroughly becoming very familiar with the language and sourced verses to see what parts of the Bible they came from. I found this to be very beneficial and found out a lot of information. There does not seem to be any problems with the text in the edition of the Bible that I read this passage in. Also, Matthew 5:38-42 definitely fits into chapter 5 context wise in regards to what comes before it and after it. There are no unexpected jumps in this section, and it is fluent with the rest of the text in Chapter 5. There are not a lot of grammatical errors in these five verses, and the material seems logical to a person who is interpreting this section in a modern day sense as well as a person who is interpreting the text as people back in the ancient world did. Either way of interpretation leads to fluent reading of the text and an easy understanding of it. The writer of this section uses specific circumstances in the text to paint a picture for the audience such as "An eye for an eye and A tooth for a tooth ? or "when someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other as well ?. The reader of this text can picture Jesus sitting on top of a mountain saying these verses to people as they listen to him. This is unique because this phrase was initially created for an oral society and not a society that writes everything down as ours does today. Overall the use of language, where the section is placed in the Gospel of Matthew, and the overall presentation of this text seemed very effective when I initially inspected the text.
After inspecting the text, I sourced the verses in Matthew 5:38-42. The first verse, 38, came from M although there were many parts in Mark that seemed to touch around the same point. Although this verse can be found in a number of different places in the bible such as Exodus 21:24, Leviticus 24: 19-20, and Deuteronomy 19: 21, it is not found in Mark or Q meaning that it must be from M. Verse 39 came from Q 6: 29a and verse 40 came from Q 6: 29b. Verse 41 was not in Mark or Q so it came from M, and verse 42 came from Q 6: 30. It is apparent that the writer of this text used a lot of material in Q when writing this section of the Sermon on the Mount and did not use any of Mark.
