Movie Exhibition

The strategic issue in the movie exhibition case includes the decline in attendees. The customer base is declining and is hurting the net income of the exhibitions. The most profitable sectors are the concessions and advertising. An increase in the price of ticket sales may drive attendees even further away. If attendees keep decreasing, advertisers will withdraw their purchases and the entities will be left with concessions. The industry as a whole is feeling the effects of declining attendees. The overall fixed costs are out of the control of the operating management. In the exhibition industry the fixed costs are steep. This limits the profitability margins with declining attendees. The strategic issue is how to increase the number of attendees? The exhibitions do not control the types of movies being produced but the movies are the driving force for attendees. The fixed costs are the same at one attendee to several thousand attendees and an effective strategy of how to cover the fixed cost plus profits need to be developed.

The recommendation is for each individual exhibition to perform a balanced scorecard. Each entity can look at how well they are continuously improving and creating value, what are their core competencies and operational excellence, how satisfied are their customers, and how they are doing for their shareholders. After identifying which strategies are creating value and which strategies are not then the entity can develop new strategies to implement for the non- performing strategies. Management can develop strategies to think outside of the box and utilize the facilities for other operations rather than just movies. ...Exhibition Review The exhibition that I went to see was Kurt at the Seattle Art Museum. I’m really glad that Hadley and Maxwell came to give us their artist talk before I went to see the exhibit because there were several components of the exhibit (including their own) that I could completely relate to their works. The first exhibit that really caught my attention (partially because it’s the first thing you see in the Kurt exhibit) was Hadley and Maxwell’s sound booth. It was an interesting set up to give the feeling of being in Kurt Cobain shoes. I was slightly confused by the studio-feeling of the booth combined with the sound of a cheering crowd playing, but nonetheless still a cool feeling piece that gave the impression of what Cobain experienced when he went onstage. As I moved through the exhibit I came across a smashed-apart drum set covered in stalagmites. The piece was titled “Deathstar Memorial” by Banks Violette. This piece was the perfect epitome of what Nirvana was all about and the dark feelings that they conveyed to their fans and the feelings that were present (even still today) about the tragic death of Cobain himself. The piece was cool because it gave the impression that it had been broken apart for a while and the stalagmites had grown onto the drum set, as if when Cobain died Nirvana was smashed apart and then the set was left to let nature takes its course. ...A Visit To An Exhibition Recently an exhibition was held in our town. It was not so big and grand as the recent any metro city fair, yet it was remarkable in its own way. It was a very modest shows nevertheless it was represented and well attended.  It was organized by the district authorities to encourage the introduction of cottage industries in villages. The district collector, RDO and the local leaders took a keen interest and put up a very good show. Never before had we realized that our village possessed such as vast scope for the development of cottage industries. We all felt that a vast heap of wealth was lying unused in villages.  The exhibition was held in the vast grounds of the banks of the river Cauvery. A temporary fence was erected on all sides and temporary stalls were built to accommodate exhibits of different articles.  The exhibitions lasted for about a week and were attended by thousands of people. Buying and selling worth thousands of rupees was done. The district authorities were pleased with its success.  First there were agricultural exhibits which the farmers had displayed. ...It doesn’t take intense or in depth analysis for one to conclude that the movie industry as a whole is heading on a negative path. This negative growth trend is heavily influenced by a number of contributing factors which individually impact the various components of the movie industry value chain but more specifically the exhibitors. Throughout this paper I will be focusing on improving the future strategic plans of the exhibitors while assessing their contribution to this decline and what they and their counterparts could do in order to maximize future revenues and profitability. Being an industry that has been constantly adopting new technology and trends, I am of the opinion that leveraging this retail space not only for advertising space (standees, posters, etc.) but also for enhancing the cinema experience, would make profits soar in the long term. By having Bowling centers, Billiards tables and other in-house sporting activities, it lures the young adults and children alike. Introducing a diversified alternate content during the weekdays and off-peak hours would be another mechanism of generating greater profits. The experience of being at a movie theatre is the sole differentiator and maximizing it without adversely affecting the consumer interests should be the goal of exhibitors. The external threats to this industry lies in the very hands that feed it – the studios. Studios are poaching that sacred territory of exclusivity by introducing Video-On-Demand and reducing the gap between movie and DVD releases.
