Movie Questions for HSB4U

1. What is the major question an anthropologist would ask? Answer it.
2. What is the major question a psychologist would ask? Answer it.
3. What is the major question a sociologist would ask? Answer it.
4. How accurate is this movie in depicting a generalization of society?
5. Is diversity a direct correlation to racism?

1. Do you think that racism still exists in today’s current culture and society?
Yes, it definitely does. While we have become more a multicultural society, that does not mean that we have accepted all the other cultures and races; he have learned to tolerate them. This can be seen when Sandra Bullock’s character is having dinner with her higher class friends and she mentions a bad part of tone that is known for its black community. One of her friends reply in an almost disgusted tone that she does, but that she has no need to ever go that way. That just goes to show you that she judges the type of people that live in that area, and tries to stay clear of it.

2. Why do you think Sandra Bullock’s character invited the young black boy to live with her?
Her character gives off the vibe that she is confident, supportive, caring, family-orientated, and driven. I would assume that she grew up in a home that was warm and welcoming, and supportive of her decisions. She went to University, and currently lived a happy life with her family. Her younger years clearly shaped her into the person (or character) that she was. For her to see a young boy, cold, and with nowhere to go, her maternal instincts kicked in and she had to take care of him. She was already a mother to two children, so being a mother was nothing new for her. She began to care for this boy as she did her own, and could not let him leave. She genuinely wanted to see him do well.

3. Do you think that prestigious schools, like in the movie, are all so judgemental of those that differ from their average students (white kids from well off families)?
I do believe that some of the older heads of schools such as the one that we saw in the movie would be stuck in their old ways and might not be open to a different type of student. Though, as seen with the coach, there are those who focus on the individual and not where they come from. I believe that society is doing this everywhere, not just in schools. More and more individuals are fighting for equal opportunities in institutions these days.

4. I believe that this movie is pretty accurate with depicting a generalization of society. It shows us how prejudice is still alive, how different members of different social communities act, how the situation of the movie might raise questions (like it did at the end with the investigator), etc. It did an all-around good job in my opinion, and I believe that the movie also won awards as well.

5. I believe that diversity relates to racism, for sure, but maybe not directly. I would say that we cover up the fact that there still is racism by promoting diversity. Many companies my strive to hire a diverse team of people, but that could be leading them to pick those of colour over white people just to appear that they are not racist or have any prejudice towards anyone. Hollister is an example where their website broadcasts the fact that they focus on having a diverse team of people, but what many don’t realize is that they have received many lawsuits and complaints in the past for their hiring method and discrimination. Their goal is to hire attractive people, and for a long time, that was tan skinny girls and tan muscular guys. They have a specific look policy that resulting in them asking a Muslim woman to remove her hijab. She ended up suing the company.…...

Short Answer Questions

...Beau Smith, Zach Chrzan, Robbie Wacker, Terence Heiser 9/16/12 Business Comm. Short Answer Questions 45. An accounting career would be an interesting career to pursue. Listening can be a vital part of the job. One example would be having a more people oriented style of listening and being able to understand what they say more effectively to be able to help them with their problem. Along with being people oriented, being versatile in our listening style can make us better accountants. An action oriented style can help us accomplish that. Asking questions as an accountant is important. By asking questions we can obtain more information to help accomplish a goal for customers. When being people-oriented, the best way to improve your communication is to not worry so much about the factual information at that point. There will be time to make up all of the information that may be lost at another time. When asking questions, don’t just ask questions to make the person feel involved, rather really listen to the content of what they are saying. Really listen to the answer which they give, and take it for what it is worth. When being task-oriented, the best way to improve listening skills in this area is to remove the emotion from the situation, and focus solely on the information at hand. 46. The three barriers which affect our listening the most are preoccupation, fear of appearing ignorant and physical distractions. A lot of times in our busy lives, we can......

Training Is the Answer...but What Is the Question

...Article Critique Training is the Answer…But What Was the Question The author’s main objective of this article is to ask the question of whether training really works or not. Mr. Rosner looks at how managers were being trained in order to develop the employees that they managed. This article also speaks about the mindset of personnel that attend training. Rosner states, in the words of Bob Pike, president of Minneapolis-based Creative Training Techniques, “Most people come to training with one of four mindsets: as a learner, a networker, a vacationer or a prisoner” (Rosner, 2009). These mindsets that people possess can make the training better or worse for the people attending it. If they come in with a learning mindset then they tend to more focused on what they are about to learn. They are more involved in the training and understand what they are there for. The networker mindset person is there for learning but they want to network with other people within the class. They are looking to make connections in order to have more connections for a later date, maybe for a better job or for something they may need in their current company. The vacationer mindset person is there to get away from everything not to learn. They want to get away from the office and enjoy their time away. The prisoner feels as if they were forced to be there and they come in mostly with a closed mind about the training they are attending. Rosner also speaks about some problems that people have......

...University of Washington Graduate School of Business Finance 553 Midterm Assignment Rocky Higgins February 10, 2004 In less than five, double-spaced, typewritten pages, plus any exhibits, please answer the following questions about MW Petroleum Corp. This assignment is worth a maximum of 100 points. 1. (10 points.) Apart from any quantitative analysis, are there any reasons to anticipate that Apache Corporation’s acquisition of MW Petroleum might be a positive net present value activity for Apache, for Amoco? Explain. This looks like an attractive deal for both parties. Amoco does many things well, but managing smaller, marginally productive oil and gas fields apparently isn’t one of them. This is a chance to unload some properties that because of their high cost structure, Amoco can’t manage profitably. Apache, on the other hand, has low costs and is an efficient operator of small- to medium-sized properties. The company has grown significantly in recent years by acquiring less well-run properties and applying its “rationalize and reconfigure” strategy. The MW Petroleum properties appear to offer the opportunity to continue this strategy. If Amoco can strike a price wherein Apache shares some of its operating savings with Amoco, both parties can generate positive net present values from the transaction. Acquisition of MW Petroleum may also reduce the volatility of Apache’s cash flows by making them less dependent on gas. Although this may......

Interview Questions and Answers

...TEN TOUGH INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND TEN SMART ANSWERS If only interviewees could have the slightest idea of the kind of questions interviewers will ask them, a lot more people would be able to overcome mental fear of the unknown which often produces the physical symptoms of nervousness. The best way to prepare mentally is to know what may be coming. Fear of the unknown can only exist when there is an unknown. Take the time to understand some of the standards when it comes to interviewing questions. The following are some of the most difficult questions you will face in the course of your job interviews. Some questions may seem rather simple on the surface such as ‘tell me about yourself’ but these questions can have a variety of answers. The more open ended the question, the wider the variation in the answers. Once you have become practiced in your interviewing skills, you will find that you can use almost any question as a launching pad for a particular topic or compelling story. Others are classic interview questions, such as “what is your greatest weakness”? Questions most people answer improperly. In this case, the standard textbook answer for the greatest weakness question is to provide a veiled positive such as: I work too much. I just work and work and work. Wrong. Either you are lying or, worse yet, you are telling the truth, in which case you define working too much as a weakness and really do not want to work much at all. The following answers are provided to......

Data have little meaning unless they are grouped in a logical manner. b. Field: A character or a group of characters (numeric or alphanumeric) that describes a specific characteristic. A field may define a telephone number, a date, or other specific characteristics that the end user wants to keep track of. c. Record: A logically connected set of one or more fields that describes a person, place, event, or thing. For example, a CUSTOMER record may be composed of the fields CUST_NUMBER, CUST_LNAME, CUST_FNAME, CUST_INITIAL, CUST_ADDRESS, CUST_CITY, CUST_STATE, CUST_ZIPCODE, CUST_AREACODE, and CUST_PHONE. d. File: Historically, a collection of file folders, properly tagged and kept in a filing cabinet. Although such manual files still exist, we more commonly think of a (computer) file as a collection of related records that contain information of interest to the end user. For example, a sales organization is likely to keep a file containing customer data. Keep in mind that the phrase related records reflects a relationship based on function. For example, customer data are kept in a file named CUSTOMER. The records in this customer file are related by the fact that they all pertain to customers. Similarly, a file named PRODUCT would contain records that describe products – the records in this file are all related by the fact that......
