Port expander is a device that allows a port on a computer to connect to multiple devices. There are two basic types of port expanders, internal and external. An internal port expander has a connection on the inside of a computer, connected to the motherboard and the only part the user sees is the expansion plate containing multiple ports. External port expander has connections on the outside of the computer and is more obvious, a cable plugs into the existing port on the computer and has multiple places to connect other devices on an external hub or similar device. The advantages of using port expanders are that you have more ports then normal to use. For example SAS expanders take one port and make many more out of them. If you have one at 6gbps and you expand it to connect 8 devices, throughout all 8 ports the total is only 6gbps or about 80MBps.
Some of the disadvantages of port expanders are external port expanders, not only do you have to buy them at a local store or online, but you also have the cable that has to be plugged into one of your USB ports. The cable itself can be annoying, some other factors are; the loss of one of your USB ports (depending on what type of expander you are using this might limit your abilities to plug in other USB devices). As for the question of; are port expanders made for specific types of computers or if they are generic devices that will work with any computer? The answer is they are all the same. In today’s modern world, any port expander you buy will work with both MAC and PC computers, making them more versatile than ever.

Most USB hubs allow you to hook up 3 to 5 USB connections from only 1 USB port on your computer. The disadvantage of using a port expander is speed. The single port you are connecting to only operates at a set speed; example of this is a USB 2.0 port operates at 480 Mbit/s. If you have a portable hard drive that runs at 300 Mbit/s and a digital camera running at 180 Mbit/s that leaves 0 Mbit/s left for any other USB device on the USB hub; you could run into a bottleneck situation if you are trying to run another device at the same time. I have used several USB hubs in the past and they seemed to work really well for me. I was not using all devices I had plugged into the hub at the same time. I found it was a lot easier than plugging and unplugging devices all the time just to plug in another device. There are some advantages of using a port expander. ...Port Expander I had never heard of a port expander before this class, but after much looking, I’ve found out what a port expander is and what it does. “ A port expander is a hardware device designed to allow a user to utilize more than one device on a single port at one time. For example, the device may allow seven devices to connect to one serial port.”(Computer Hope, 2016) It still didn’t make much sense to me, even after reading about it. As I went along finding more information, the more sense it made. What I found about this item is that additional ports receive and send data into a parallel format, which means it needs to be converted to a serial format. I found on the internet sixteen different port expanders, those would be SCSI port expander, audio port expander, VGS port expander, SATA port expander, Ethernet port expander, Modus Serial port expander, SSD port expander, SAS port expander, DB-25 port expander, USB port expander, VDI port expander, Microphone port expander, Video port expander, and Serial port expander (termpaperwarehouse, 2016). As far as if the port expanders are made for specific types of computers, what I’ve found are mixed answers online for this one. So for my own conclusion, I’m going to say they are generally basic, but doesn’t mean it will work with all computers, because a port expander doesn’t actually introduce any new hardware, just introduces a connection.
