A cognitive bias is a pattern of deviation in judgment that occurs in particular situations. A cognitive bias can also be explained as a flaw in judgment which is caused by memory, social attribution, and statistical errors. Since, memorable events are further magnified by coverage in the media; the bias is compounded on the society level. Two well-known examples would be estimations of the probability of plane accidents and the kidnap of children. Both events are quite rare, but the huge majority of the population outrageously overestimates their probability, and behaves accordingly. In reality, one is more likely to die from an auto accident than from a plane accident, and a child has a higher risk of dying in an accident than the risk of getting kidnapped. Availability bias is at the root of many other human biases and culture-level effects. Availability bias is a cognitive illusion. The availability biasis a mental shortcut that occurs when people make judgments about the probability of events by how easy it is to think of examples. ...Bias is “Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair,” as defined by the oxford dictionary. History is a subject that studies the history of the past events where historians express their judgment. In the recorded history, we often come across cases were we are able to discern bias in ones viewpoint. Few years ago, India experienced one of the most disastrous terrorist attacks on the decade. The 2008 Mumbai attacks, which dated from the 26th November 2008 to 29th November 2008. There was a lot of controversy as to who was the main culprit of these attacks. The ties between the two countries – India and Pakistan have been frail and contentious, therefore before any evidence was brought to the eyes of the world; already a lot of bias was perceptible not only by the Indian media but also American officials. Through this essay I want to objectively explore the confirmation bias that is deeply woven into the fabric of the language used by the media to inform us about the history of the Mumbai attacks. ...Eliminating Bias People make decisions everyday in favor of one group, and to the detriment of others, without even realizing it. This prejudice or favoritism is bias. Biases affect not only our judgment but also our behavior, beliefs, and perception. Biases are selective, learned, culturally determined and can be inaccurate. Biased thinking leads to misunderstanding, wrong decisions, and to costly consequences. Bias can prove very destructive and is the foundation of stereotypes, prejudice and, ultimately, discrimination. A stereotype is an exaggerated belief, image or distorted truth about a person or group — a generalization that allows for little or no individual differences or social variation. A prejudice is an opinion, prejudgment or attitude about a group or its individual members. Prejudices are often accompanied by ignorance, fear or hatred. Prejudice begins with attachment to a close circle of acquaintances or an "in-group" such as a family and is often aimed at "out-groups." Discrimination is behavior that treats people unequally because of their group memberships and often begins with negative stereotypes and prejudices. Once learned, stereotypes and prejudices resist change, even when evidence fails to support them or points to the contrary. I predict outcomes without acknowledging the correct outcome. I often use this bias when I watch sports. I am an avid fan of basketball, and I typically like to predict the outcome of games and even the entire season. Cognitive bias is processing or obtaining information and filtering it through my own personal preferences. This bias is an individual’s personal preference or worldview, rather than concrete facts. Being aware of this bias will affect how decisions are made critical logical thinking should be used. I will not make decisions based on information I have previously gained but use resources to make a definitive decision. Facts should be considered for the best possible outcome. ... Morgan risked his life to expose the secrets of fast food companies, and in particular McDonald’s to help educate the public. Examination of Bias: In the documentary, multiple forms of bias were exhibited, clearly establishing an anti-fast food campaign. Had the documentary not be biased, Morgan would’ve made some kind of an effort to get a hold of information that presented both sides of the story. However, without exception every person interviewed in the documentary had said something along the lines of fast food is bad for you, that it is harmful to your health, and that it will eventually make you fat and/or obese. Maybe what he did find was actually is the truth, but it was presented in bias. The audience can tell that Morgan started from the assumption that fast food is unhealthy, and everything in the movie only proves that point. One of the examples that spoke the loudest was when he visited the school for students with behavioral problems, and cited their organic, healthy meals as the reason why the school showed good order. The good behavior within the school is, I'm sure, based on a number of factors, and surely healthy food isn't the sole reason why the school was calm. Yet there he was, proclaiming that it was because of their improved lunch program that the school was more productive. ... The Bias Challenge Anyone who is interested attaining a better personal understanding about their personal bias should take part in a bias challenge. These challenges can be attempted if you are curious to see if you have any bias or to take a closer look at your bias and see how they could be based on your personal inherent beliefs that are influenced by your culture. No matter which culture you are associated with, there is a hierarchy scale when it comes to ethnicity. Within that hierarchy scale, it can be observed that certain groups have privilege but those same privileged groups do not have that same internal perceptual view of themselves. For example, Caucasians are view as being high on the hierarchy scale while Latino Americans are low on that same scale. Unfortunately, Caucasians do not perceived themselves to be any more privileged than the next person. Could the reason be due to never experiencing the same transgressions that lower ethnic groups on the hierarchy scale have been subjected too? In order to answer that, I had to ask that question to myself. Surprisingly the answer did not immediately come to mind. One would think that if you ask yourself if you have any bias towards other ethnic groups, you would immediately answer a resounding “NO!”. To get the truth you have to watch at least three different news channels and then research multiple sites on the Web. The ten simple questions he discussed in the article will make deciding if the content being reported is worth listening to. One of the key issues I see with journalists is they have their own agendas and are not secure enough in their position to have it questioned or debated on television. They are quick to attack their “opponent” with a barrage of unchecked fact-based questions and will not allow their victims a proper platform to respond. If the conversation is not going the way they want it to they will simply “run out of time” and go to a commercial break. Journalists say they are just doing their jobs and want the truth, but I know it’s merely for ratings and pushing their agenda. In researching the two websites listed in the content area, the Media Research Center (MRC) and Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), I’ve come to the conclusion that there will always be bias in today’s media. The article raises key elements to why industries are now biased and why not all drug companies can be trusted with there experiments for drug testing. ...Lately, the concept of unconscious bias or “hidden bias” has come into the forefront of our work as diversity advocates because the dynamics of diversity are changing as we enter the 21st Century. Our tradition paradigm has generally assumed that patterns of discriminatory behavior in organizations are conscious; that people who know better do the right thing, and those who do not cause bias. As a result, we have developed a “good person/bad person” paradigm of diversity: a belief that good people are not biased, but inclusive, and that bad people are the biased ones (R. Cook 2008). Forms of unconscious bias with foreign employees: Out of the 10 unconscious biases mentioned in the article by Cook Ross (2014), I have noted the following to have a negative impact on the international business relations. Diagnosis bias, having foreign employees from India, employees make a quick decision on how to act with a person just based on initial perceived opinion. Pattern recognition, employees decide that if the Indian employee has completed a task wrong once before, they will do it wrongly again. Home bias is defined as the preference of the investor invests the equity mainly in domestic market rather than invest in the foreign market even though they can gain substantial benefit due to international diversification. The term of “equity home bias puzzle” is referring to the concept of holding extremely large proportion of domestic equity compare to foreign equity.
