You Can Make a Difference by Volunteering
There are many different ways you can make a difference by volunteering; however, where to start can sometimes be difficult, because there are many people in need. Below I will provide some example and past experiences on where and how to volunteer, so that you too can make a difference by volunteering. Here are couple different genres of volunteering, youth, homeless, seniors, and your community. There are at least 400 organizations across the valley of the sun that focus on raising money, providing food, shelter, and assistance for the homeless, youth, senior citizens and even for your community. Sometimes it is hard to find time or even selfish reasons get in our way from volunteering, but not only does volunteering makes the person you’re helping feel good, it also makes the person volunteering Feel good about themselves. And you know that at least for day you are making a difference in someone’s life.
One of the genres of volunteering is for youth. We as young adults owe it to our younger generation to make sure that have the same kinds of opportunities that we have or had. After all they are our future. On Saturday April 5, I was privileged to participate in Mesa Harley Davidson’s 15 annual Torch Run for youth Special Olympics of Arizona. The event was a success and we raised over $5,000 dollars to help support the cause. Here are a few places where you can make a difference. Boys and Girls Club. There are 11 Boys and Girls Clubs scattered across the valley. They have a variety of volunteer opportunities, from club volunteers to special event volunteering. Yetc (Youth Evaluation and Treatment Centers) teaches youth positive behaviors, healthier life styles, and help to heal emotional wounds. Donations to this organization help provide children back to school supplies, uniforms, and recreational opportunities.…...

Community Environment Issue

... Community Environmental Issue Kornorton Sullivan October 13, 2013 SCI/275 Claudia De Mendonca Synek Listopad Community Environmental Issue Environmental issues are continuously growing throughout America and the rest of the world. In order to protect what is left of the environment, each state developed an environmental department. These environmental departments are working to find ways to not only protect the environment, but to resolve the issues effecting the environment. Scientific assessments, risk analysis, public engagements, political considerations, and long-term environmental management is the starting point of succeeding in protecting the environment. One key element effecting the environment in Georgia is pollution. The population has grown past the means of Georgia’s expectation. The population growth brings about building new homes in wooded areas, new roads, more pollution, and fewer resources. Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division is geared towards protecting human health, sustaining healthy ecosystems, ensuring resources to support a growing economy ("Environmental Protection Division Georgia Department Of Natural Resources", 2010-2011). These are the new issues that have emerged in Georgia. Not too long ago, the American public became concerned about environment and the effects on humans. The federal policymakers implemented statutes as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the......

A Community Problem

...of the greatest problems faced by every community aside from drugs and homicide. In the community where I live, property theft has always been an issue. Day after day, more houses were being robbed in broad daylight. If there is a case of property theft; properties are broken and stolen, fear was developed among victims and trust among neighbors was compromised. Property theft caused victims property damage and loss. Usually, if there was a robbery in a house, thieves break windows or doors to get in the home which causes property damage. Aside from the damage being done, the theft victim will be at loss; household appliances, jewelry and money are the most common interest of these thieves. Theft also causes fear among the victims. In many instances, these homeowners are now afraid of being robbed the second time. Other homeowners would be very afraid of leaving their home just to protect their property. Trust among neighbors was being compromised when a house was robbed. Some homeowners will think that their next door neighbor might be the thief with the numerous cases of theft arising. Some next door neighbors might have been observing another neighbors movement the time they leave home and the time they arrived. With the cases of property theft increasing in most communities, homeowners have installed home security to protect their property and the house itself. Other homeowners bought pet dogs because it can help protect properties also. In our community where theft......

Community Environmental Issue

...Community Environmental Issue/Coal Mining in Arkansas Kathleen Hastings November 7, 2013 SCI 275 Clifford Blizard Community Environmental Issue/Coal Mining in Arkansas “Coal Production in Arkansas is not often done, but there are some cases in Arkansas. In 2004, the state produced about seven thousand short tons of coal. Arkansas was twenty sixth in the nation in coal production according to the National Mining Association. Arkansas does have many coal deposits; however, the most accessible coal has already been mixed. There is bituminous coal present in the Arkansas River Valley. There are about 9 billion tons of lignite coal in the eastern and southern parts of Arkansas. We get most of our coal from Wyoming. Arkansas used over fifteen million short tons of coal for electricity in 2004. (SourceWatch) Active Coal Mining sites are inspected each month by personal from the Russellville Field Office. When infractions are noted, notices of violation and cessation orders may be issued by the site’s inspector.” (Coal Program, Wayne Van Buren) “The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) established performance standards for coal mining operations for the express purpose of protecting society and the environment from the adverse effects of surface coal mining operations. The Arkansas Surface Coal Mining and Reclamation Code (ASCMRC) was adopted by Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commission on July 25, 1980.” (Coal Program, Wayne Van Buren) “The......

Community Problem Solving

...Community Problem Solving Law enforcement is a constantly changing organization. As society grows more diverse, population increases, technology becomes more advanced, and criminals become smarter, the methods of policing must adapt and overcome. The current strategy for policing is referred to as Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS). Since the late 1970s early 1980s COPPS began gaining ground and momentum with involving and building relationships among communities in the effort to reduce and prevent crime. “The community policing model balances reactive responses to calls for service with proactive problem-solving centered on the causes of crime and disorder. Community policing requires police and citizens to join together as partners in the course of both identifying and effectively addressing these issues” (Fisher-Stewart, 2007, pg.4). Eucalyptus Ridge, a small community in Lakeside, is home to only military families. Most would image that a military housing community would be the one place that is free from crime. However, that is not the case for this community. Being located approximately 7 miles away from Barona Resort and Casino, Eucalyptus Ridge sits right off Highway 67. There was a time when the wandering (and most often slightly inebriated) trouble-makers drifted into the community looking for opportunities. The community is also not gated creating even more temptations for law breakers to come inside and do as they please. With no police or......

Community Issue

...for electricity water or gas but that is all changing. Families are now realizing the inconvenience of living on base. If a military family wants to live off base that’s not a problem, it is actually more convenient now. The problem with this program is the fact that families already have they’re pay deducted to live on base and now they must be concerned with an extra bill. Some may argue that it is only fair we pay electrical bills too because everyone else does it as well but this is not the case when taking into consideration the amount of money that is already being deducted from the resident. Attempting to live on base a person must first be put on a 6-month waiting list, the housing is not of best quality, and neighbors are far from quit at times. If a solution could be thought of, it would be to raise the pay of individuals who decide to live on base, or reduce the amount of money being deducted to live on base. Another good solution can be cutting the amount of power being fed to your home by setting up regulators of some sort so all homes can slowly get used to using less and less electricity. It is only fair to say that the men and women fighting for our country are being treated unfairly in this situation as well as other situations. The solution is not giving them more bills and issues, the solution is yes to be more conservative but without charging them. In conclusion The Resident Energy Conservation Program is not the solution to conserving energy......

Community Problems

...EN1320: Composition I | My Community Problem | Module 3 Essay | Edward Storms 7/12/2014 | Every community has their own problems and issues, some are worse than others. The problem that my community has is a lack of funding for programs that help people. These programs are very important to have in a community, because without them the people that really need help will suffer and could possibly go without necessities that they need to survive. These programs to help people in need are extremely important in every community no matter how big or how small. They allow families to continue to live their everyday lives without struggling so much. There are many different programs that need to be funded to continue to help these people. The program might help them with food, clothing, utility payments, child care, housing, job training, medical needs, and many more. Without being able to fund these programs, the people that need them would have to go without. I do not this that is right because, when a family is in dire need of help and they have ran out of personal resources and have no other options, what are they supposed to do? They pay taxes and obey laws just like you and I do, but if there’s not enough funding to help them, then they would go without. That is why it is such a problem. The reason that I think my community has this problem is simply because of its smaller size. We are not a larger city with hundreds of thousands of residents that contribute...

Community Environmental Issues

...Community Environmental Issue Holly Regan SCI/275 July 27, 2014 Stacy Murphy Community Environmental Issue The environmental issue of concern in the State of Oregon is its rivers. The water quality state of ten of the largest rivers in Oregon becomes polluted by tributaries which feed into them. Water quality is impacted not only by pollution, but also by water flow, streamside vegetation, and changes to the stream channel, and these factors are important for overall stream health. In some cases, smaller streams have unique water quality problems that become diluted once they reach a major river (OEC, 2007). Water quality declines from the beginning at the headwaters stream down to where it ends at the mouth of the river because pollutants are added throughout the journey by the type of land environment surrounding the body of water such as industrial or agricultural. Individually one can take action to reduce pollution and conserve resources to protect the environment by restoring streams and uplands to improve important habitat conditions of major rivers for fish and wildlife. Oregon has many tributaries that flow into some of the largest rivers in Oregon and North America crossing over and through several states in the union before emptying themselves into the Pacific Ocean. As each river makes a several thousand square-mile journey, many pollutants find their way into ten of Oregon’s largest rivers like the Columbia, Snake, Rogue, Willamette, Umpqua,......

Community Problems

...If I were given the chance to identify and improve a problem in my community, I would try to build a safe haven for young people from drugs, violence, and gangs. With the recent outbreak of violence, I feel that communities would benefit by having recreational centers that would have activities, organizational affiliations, gym equipment, and studio equipment that would occupy the time of young people and put their energy to good use. The recreation center could also offer educational opportunities as well, such as tutors, computer classes, online courses, GED classes, job placement, college/university enrollment, counseling, and much more to better help educate the young people of today. Young people not only need help in their social skills, but help with educational endeavors also. If this were to happen, I would volunteer my spare time to the cause, because we, the young people of today, are still the future of tomorrow. Young people need to have a sense of knowing that someone cares about their well being, what they are doing and how they are doing it, where they are going and how they are getting there, and what type of people they are hanging with. Young people need to have a sense of discipline. Young people need direction in their life, a sense of knowing that they are headed down the right path to success. Being a successful human being gives meaning to your life, knowing that someone helped you to achieve a better place in life and giving strength to your......

Community and Problem-Solving Policing

...Community and Problem-Solving Policing CJS/210 July 17, 2011 Community and Problem-Solving Policing Introduction In the United States today there are modern laws that are used in policing which are called community and problem-solving policing. Both of these are known to be useful in the community and with the law enforcement when trying to prevent and control crime in the community. At the core of problem-solving policing is responding to the matters within each community all across the United States. With that being said community and problem-solving policing are both improvements to the police and society that understands the use for these methods. I am going to talk about community policing. This method of full-service is really personalized policing where police officers patrol and work in the same area day in and day out. Community policing is a law that is brought down from the police department to provide assistance with the public and also inside the community which is very effective in minimizing crime due to the aid received by the police and individuals in the community. As the community develops an involvement of proactive techniques of community policing certain should then be reduced and managed in a safer manner. Police officers on a daily basis face ethical concerns in which they are the ones that are more experience to handle or answer to them. With that being said a lot of those situations due involve letting people get away......

My Writing and Community Issues

...Writing and Community Issues As I first read this assignment, I was a little confused. I have trouble speaking proper English and I know when I start to write in college, I was confusing my teachers with my run-on sentences and incorrect grammar. Now that I have attended Kaplan my teachers have used constructed criticism that help me want to learn to write even more. There are so many reasons why my writing was not reaching my readers. I was afraid of just what I need to write. Not sure, of the correct topic for my paper, I would e-mail my teachers to give me more direction on just what I needed to be writing. I never proof- read my writing before I turned it in I would always be at the deadline because I would always wait until the last minutes and not read the direction correctly. I have problems with my critical thinking. I am fighting against a mental illness and my thoughts are never where they need to be. I have problems with run-on sentences not knowing where to start the next sentences. Now that I know all my problems with me writing, I will try very hard not to do them anymore besides asking my teacher, to confirm my writing assignments. My community has many problems, such as killings, stealing, knockout games, and Mental Illness associated with homeless. I have mental illness so does my sister and mother and father, I take medication, my mother and father has gotten help for their illness. Nevertheless, my sister refuse to get help with her issues she......

Community and Problem-Solving Policing

...Community and Problem-Solving Policing CJS/210 There are different types of policing methods used through the different local, state, and governmental policing agencies throughout the United States. However are any of the philosophies better or worse than their counterparts. We will be covering different philosophies used in the current policing administrations today. The first of the two major philosophies that we will cover is called community policing. The primary goal or focus of this policing method is to attempt to involve the community as an active partner in addressing crime problems throughout the community. Community policing sets out to separate the thinking of individual segments consisting of the police, and the community. It instead is trying to make a single joint effort that is completed by both the police department and the community residents working as a single unit to deter or stop crime. The community policing philosophy has an emphasis on partnership and openness to the point that there have been innovative ideas created by the Detroit police department with their mini-station program. The idea behind this was that more officers closer to the community with great community relations skills would help to encourage the community with......

Community Issues

...Many communities have issues that bother or even cause trouble in the community. In my community the thing I most worry about is children safety while playing in the streets. Home appearance is also a big thing not only to the neighbors but to potential buyers. Also lawn care when your lawn is green and others look like deserts. The safety, lawn care, and appearance are an issue in every community that can cause either a place for great living or tension among neighbors. In my community there is a lot of families that like every other community has children that play not only in the yards, sidewalks, and streets. This is a very serious safety issue in my eyes due to the children being un-supervised. Other people in the community speed over the limit posted and children play there and may be hit or injured. Even though the children play in the street it cause a safety risk to drivers that don’t speed or drive wreck less do to the children running in and out of the streets without looking for cars. The children are our future and they need to be protected. When a person is looking to buy a future home they want to see a nice neighborhood that looks respectable and not as if it’s a bad neighborhood. The appearance of a home in my belief can say a lot about the people who live there. Someone who takes care of their home for example pressure washing, not trash in yard, paint nicely applied. Also there are some resident that don’t have the money but the residents should do as...

Issues and Problems

...Issues and problem: Problem solving process In some cases people get the difference in problem and issues mixed up and put the two together, which in some situation can be not a good idea for some. In some situation separating the two help to prevent smaller issues from being a big problem. In my paper it you will read about my work places where my boss was unfair. Well I was working in a nursing home and we all have certain people to work with the resident. But just like any other place of work it doesn’t be the people that you are seeing about it be the people you work with. The situation is more of a problem then an issue, because it keeps repeating itself after I feel like it is resolved. The difference in the situation is that the situation should been handle, because it was a health risk but it wasn’t so that was the issue. But when the job still was not getting done it became a problem, I express the problem to our supervisor that was over us. To see with that help and try to show the person the proper way of doing their job. But the supervisor thought that the person wasn’t doing any harm, so it continues and they train someone wrong. And the supervisor was looking at the rest of the employee because of the person mess up, when he should have handled it when it was an issue. Well to solve the problem I ask could I be removing from that floor to another one, and I gave reason and it did solve the problem. Because now I know that my residents are getting taking care......
