I. How many of you think that the minimum wage is too low?

II. Do you think that every American should be able to keep up with the costs of living?

III. As a teen employee, I know the struggle is real. Trying to make ends meet without running to my parents every time I'm in a jam is hard when I'm trying to live on minimum wage.

IV. The purpose of my speech is to persuade my audience that we need a higher minimum wage to be able to assure American workers that they can support their family.

Transition: Let me draw your attention to some facts about the minimum wage.


I. A higher minimum wage could help disadvantaged workers to cover the costs of finding and keeping a job, including transportation, child care, and uniforms (Schmitt, p. 17). We need the minimum wave increased to help people make ends meet.

a. The minimum wage has shown to lead to a decline in the number of students in school.

i. According to David Neumark, "Demand shifts toward higher productivity -employees after a minimum wage increase and that these employees take jobs in lieu of enrollment in school, in the process displacing lower-productivity employees from employment (p. 199).

ii. According to Laura Giuliano, the "employment effects may depend on the group of workers affected and on the specifics of particular labor markets.

b. There is a lot of sky-is-falling rhetoric suggesting that a high minimum wage will be a catastrophic job killer.

...Minimum wage In our country so many people live in poverty. Even if they are working hard and doing everything right. Except the government who has been spending so much money on foreign soil that we have none left to spend on ourselves. Minimum wage is not as high as it should be with all of these outrageous prices and spikes in gas and food. It should at least be bumped up to eight dollars an hour starting out or maybe more. In these times of need we need companies to start appreciating there help instead of working them to death with little to show for it. I understand that our country is in crises with the economy being so bad. On October 24, 1938, President Roosevelt signed into law “The Fair Labor Standards Act”. The federal minimum wage was set at .25 cents per hour. Many supporters of this increase believe that a $9.00 minimum wage would enable many adults to make enough money to live off for a year. The increase in minimum wages has been a topic that has been on the rise with much controversy involved. President Obama wants state and lawmakers to increase the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour by 2018. Connecticut was the first state to pass the law, which will increase their minimum wage to $10.10 by January 1, 2017. Maryland is a year and half behind them, making the minimum wage $10.10 by July 1, 2018. The reason for Maryland’s delay is because they want to give businesses more time to adjust to the new and increasing price. The increases will be in steps. The first increase will be from now until July 2018, and will increase to $8 per hour on January 1, 2015. The second increase will be to $8.75 per hour in July 2016. Raising the minimum wage will not only decrease income inequality, but also raise millions out of poverty, spur consumer spending, and ultimately lead to a more efficient workplace and workforce. Projecting this to a 40-hour work week over 50 weeks it comes to a total of $14,500 a year. This is just above the U.S poverty level for a family of 2, but below the poverty level of $22,050 for a family of 4. Despite the fact that the minimum wage has been increased 3 times since 2007, it is almost $3.00 below what it was nearly forty years ago in purchasing power. It has not kept up with inflation. If it had, the minimum wage would be $10.74 per hour. In other words, the minimum wage is a far cry from being a living wage which is a wage that is high enough for fulltime workers to provide a decent life for themselves and their families. For the benefit of American citizens and the economy, the minimum wage must be increased! Those opposed to an increase in the minimum wage focus on a number of assumptions suggesting it would be a bad idea. Under close examination, all of their arguments fall apart.   One of the main arguments for not raising the minimum wage is that it is a job killer. The reasoning is the increase in salary decreases profits and results in cutbacks in hiring. However, a study at the University of California, Berkeley, has shown that raising the minimum wage does not have a negative effect on employment.
