Question: 2. Radio plays a central role in the discussions in this chapter. How does it affect each of the three styles under consideration? What role does TV play?
Answer: For the style of rhythm and blues: In the 1950s, a new approach to radio disseminated rhythm and blues outside of regional black communities. In 1948, WDIA in Memphis began programming and advertising especially to the local black population, playing rhythm and blues records supported by a roster of sponsors. For the style of country and western: As far back the 1930s, mainstream pop played to a national audience, while country and western was most limited to regional radio exposure. Within a few years, local and regional radio stations across the nation were programming country music, especially WSM in Nashville and WLS in Chicago WSM broadcast the popular country-oriented program the Grand Ole Opry, while WLS produced the National Barndance. For the style of mainstream pop: NBC went coast-to-coast with its national radio network in 1928, which was an important step in blurring the regional boundaries of popular culture. Because of this, some pop styles became national, while others kept their regional identities. This can be attributed to network programming: the mainstream pop was heard frequently on network radio. By the early 1950s, the national audience for popular music had largely shifted from radio to television. This meant that radio needed to adapt considerably to survive, and many stations opted for a local or regional…...

Classification of Rock and Roll Music

...Classifications of Rock and Roll Music It is said that music makes the world go round. That is a very true fact. If there was no music the world would be a much lonelier, quieter and boring place to live. Music fills our lives with happiness and sadness. Sometimes it makes us mad. Sometimes it makes us want to dance. It has been around since the invention of man. The love of music starts at a very young age and continues into adulthood and old age. Whatever type of music you listen to is your choice. There are many types of music to choose from. There is Country & Western, Rhythm & Blues, Rap and Hip Hop. There is Jazz and Big Band style music. And lastly but by far not the least is Rock & Roll. Everywhere you go you can hear these types of music. You can hear it in the local shopping malls as background music, and in the churches being sung by the choir or the congregation. You can hear it on your radio at your home or in your car. You can even hear it at your favorite night club being played on a juke box or by a live band. The style of music I listen to is Rock & Roll; therefore, it is what I will be talking about in this essay. Rock & Roll got its start in the 1950’s. It is comprised of Country & Western, and Rhythm & Blues, but played at a much faster upbeat tempo. It was made popular by people like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley, who is considered to be the King of Rock & Roll. Rock & Roll music became......

...Chapter 4 RnR erupted in 1950s ~ kind of… Major RnR songs: “Rock around the clock” by Bill Haley and his comets 1955 “Crazy man crazy” by Bill Haley 1953 “Sixty minute man” by Dominoes 1951 Definition is vague, as it has to deal with RnB, sexual context and the actual genre of RnR. Sexual context of the term dates back into the mediaeval times. E.g. Shakespeare RnR was very multicultural. A simple algebraic formula for RNR is RnB + CnW = RnR, but it is overlooking some other significant elements that contributed to the creation of the RnR. RnR meant ethnicity and working-class African American contribution was also significant White and Black performers were equally performing Black church from jazz/gospel Ray Charles (I got a woman), Clyde McPhatter (Treasure of love), Sam Cooke (You send me). The Orioles, the Crows, the Chords, the Penguins created the sub genre of RnR “doo wop”. Barely any females in RnR. Only occasional females in charts like Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker Women did not sing, they were sung about, often in sexual connotation songs. RCA, CBS, Decca, and Capitol released more than 80% of all weekly top 10 hits. What allowed independent labels to compete with others: * poorly capitalized independent radio stations * Development of lightweight 45 rmp record no the 78 rmp. In early 1950s patterns of ownership started to change from individual stations to “chains” Todd Storz and Gordon McLendon both owned radio chains, who......

...the artist’s genre. This is a perfect example of an artist taking a song and transforming into a work of art. Composed by lead vocalist from One Republic, Ryan Tedder, Evan “Kidd” Bogart and Beyoncé Knowles. The singer Ray LaMontagne was the main inspiration for "Halo". Evan “Kidd” Bogart suggested they create a song in the style of Ray LaMontagne’s “Shelter" for Beyoncé Knowles and her husband Jay-Z, and proposed the title "Halo". After hearing Ryan Tedder play "angelic" chords, they wrote the song in three hours. The song was composed to be a ballad that shows insecurities about love. Beyoncé’s version of "Halo" is a contemporary down tempo power ballad that features an R&B and pop production. It has elements of gospel and soul music. The instruments used in this piece are a piano, a keyboard, drums, a synthesizer, strings, and percussion instruments. The cascading piano work is accompanied by percussive beats that alternate between handclaps and foot stomps. "Halo" was composed using common time in the key of A major, with a moderate tempo of 84 beats per minute. It is built on the chord progression A-BM-FM-D, and is written in the common verse-chorus form. Beyoncé’s vocal goes from the low note of C to the falsetto note of F, and is supported by backing vocals. She stuffs her singing with vibrato yelps and trills, fast changes between two attached notes, about a tone apart. The arrangement also consists of musical increases and automatic accents. Florence......

The Introduction of Rock Music (Beatles)

...The Introduction Of Rock Music Rock music began in the United States in 1950’s, but it has influenced and in turn been shaped by a broad field of cultures and musical traditions, including gospel music, the blues, country-and-western music, classical music, folk music, electronic music, and the popular music of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition to its use as a broad designation, the term rock music commonly refers to music styles after 1959 predominantly influenced by white musicians. There is basic agreement that rock is a form of music with a strong beat, but it is difficult to be much more explicit. The Collins Cobuild English Dictionary, based on a vast database of British usage, suggests that rock is a kind of music with simple tunes and a very strong beat that is played and sung, usually loudly, by a small group of people with electric guitars and drums, but there are so many exceptions to this description that it is practically useless. Other major rock-music styles include rock and roll, the first genre of the music; and rhythm-and-blues music (R&B), influenced mainly by black American musicians. Each of these major genres encompasses a variety of substyles, such as heavy metal, punk, alternative, and grunge. While innovations in rock music have often occurred in regional centers such as New York City; Kingston, Jamaica; and Liverpool, England, the influence of rock music is now felt worldwide. Rock Music History of Bangladesh

...The history of Bangladeshi rock music started in 1960 when a handful of self-taught musicians got together to create original music tracks. Their efforts resulted in the birth of the "Bangla Rock Scene". Among the pioneering groups in the late '60s were bands such as Windy Side of Care (Rafique Mazhar Islam Saju and Rafi Omar) (Ex-Iolites), The Lightnings, Rambling Stones, Ugly Phases and Insex Dui. They didn’t have the privilege of expensive instruments or sound systems, which present-day rockers now take for granted.[1] In 1963, "Zinga Goshty" was the first[citation needed]Orchestra Band in Bangladesh, formed in Chittagong by a young group of students of Chittagong College. [2] Azam Khan (Uchharon) a.k.a. "the Legend", a.k.a. "the Imaginative Composer", emerged around early and late 70s. Happy Akhand's "Abar Alo Elo Je Shondha" is a well known song. His premature death was a big blow to all of the musicians who were influenced by Happy's passion for music. His contemporaries include some popular figures such as late Firoze Shahi, Ferdaus Wahid and Fakir Alamgir. Among the old bands there are many bands that are still active, such as is Souls (1970), Feedback (1976), Miles (1978), and others. [3] Progression (1980s) While the early phase of Bangladeshi rock is marked by romantic songs and mellow tunes, the scenario began to change in the '80s. "Warfaze" was a progressive rock band of the country in this period. "Feedback" was another band in the `80s with their......

Rock Music

...Introduction    Rock Music, group of related music styles that have dominated popular music in the West since about 1955. Rock music began in the United States, but it has influenced and in turn been shaped by a broad field of cultures and musical traditions, including gospel music, the blues, country-and-western music, classical music (see Music, Western), folk music, electronic music, and the popular music of Asia, Africa, and Latin America (see Worldbeat). In addition to its use as a broad designation, the term rock music commonly refers to music styles after 1959 predominantly influenced by white musicians. Other major rock-music styles include rock and roll (also known as rock 'n' roll), the first genre of the music; and rhythm-and-blues music (R&B), influenced mainly by black American musicians (see African American Music). Each of these major genres encompasses a variety of substyles, such as heavy metal, punk, alternative, and grunge. While innovations in rock music have often occurred in regional centers—such as New York City; Kingston, Jamaica; and Liverpool, England—the influence of rock music is now felt worldwide. Rock Music

...Shosanna Spill Tricia Swoope ENG 112 03 July 2010 Rock Music Rock is a popular form of music that has evolved over the past couple of decades starting in the 1950s until present day. Rock music has been known to be used as a form of expression over the years. Despite its sometimes negative and defiant lyrics, rock is a form of art that allows one to release his/her feelings through singing in an expressive tone. Later styles of heavy rock music in the 1990s, such as grunge, the typical example being Seattle's Nirvana, show influences of heavy metal but are typically not labelled sub-genres of heavy metal, as opposed to thrash metal and glam metal. The general absence of virtuosic guitar solos is perhaps one reason grunge bands haven't been considered heavy metal bands. Another key artist during this time was Megadeth, which combined the relentless, speedy thrash metal riffs with the fancy guitar soloing of speed metal like Judas Priest.     Rock-n-Roll has never just been music. Heavy metal, Rhythm & Blues, Art Rock, New Wave, and the rest may be primary styles or genres but as sub-categories of rock, or rockin’ roll they do not cumulatively add up to the whole. Rock n’ Roll is a movement, a lifestyle, in many ways a belief system and all that Rock n Roll is today it owes to history: two years, no more than three when the fabric of American popular culture was torn apart and rewoven, and a new era explosively began. Rock n Roll started with slavery. To understand......

Rock Music and Culture of Th 1990's

...Rock Music and Culture Report There were many people and events that shaped my taste in music as a teenager in the 1990’s. My parents raised me in a household of strictly Country & Western music. Grunge music had exploded in the United States. The political atmosphere in the 90’s was going through a transition from a Republican President to a Democratic President that promised many changes. Although my parents raised me on country &western, and grunge was the predominant music style on the 90’s, and the country was going through big changes politically I have matured into my own eclectic taste in music today. When I was growing up my parents only listened to country& western music. They both grew up on farms, and that was the predominant music available to them. My dad was also a huge fan of Elvis Presley, and my mom listened to Willie Nelson, and Kenny Rogers. Around the age of 10 I remember my dad winning the Michael Jackson album Bad in a raffle, and he didn’t want it, so he gave it to me. This is my first memory of really getting to explore a type of music other than country& western. I was hooked on the upbeat dance tempo, and strong message of confidence. The first time my brother showed me the music video for “Bad” on MTV I became addicted to learning the moves of the urban street gang dancers. As a pre-teen my first musical “love” was The New Kids on the Block. I had my entire bedroom plastered with the posters I had ripped out of magazines such as Tiger Beat...

...South Asia in the West? The classical music of India has gained most of the attention of outsiders probably due to the colonization era that has brought Indo-European invaders (Aryan Civilization) into their territory between 2000 and 1500 BCE due to the presence of rich resources. However, Indian music, unlike the communal music of Africa and Southeast Asia, is individual and often virtuosic and can be both vocal and instrumental. The Hindustani one (North) is more appealing to the Western society as it is more instrumental based, whereas the Carnatic (south) one is more vocally oriented. Another factor that attracts the Western attention to Indian Classical Music is the presence of virtuosic improvisation 2. Discuss the following terms important to a Hindustani classical music performance: Raga, Alap, Gat, Tala, Rasa. Raga: long Hindustani instrumental improvisations. Several things stand out to the first-time listeners: twangy buzz of introductory instruments, constant ornamentation and pitch bending of main melodic part, and tension changes. The word raga (color, atmosphere) denotes a comprehensive system for the simultaneous composition and performance struggle. Alap: the opening section of a raga performance in which the performer “explores” the raga. It can last for a mere minute or so or even be extended for an hour or more. Gat: the skeletal melody used as a basis for improvisation in a raga performance of classical Indian Music Tala: cyclic rhythmic framework......

Art Rock Music

...I don’t think that art rock is pretentious or arrogant music at all. The type of music that an individual or a band chooses to create does not define their intelligence level or how well educated they are. The art rock is a genre that is just like any other genre of music that faces some negativity from different sections of people or fans. Art Rock gets the controversy because of the images of the bands or individuals and the message that they pass in their sings. The controversies however do not narrow down that the individuals are pretending or are not intelligent enough.it is just a new way of creating new music for the world and hence it should not be seen as if the bands or individuals are pretending in their passing of the message. For most of the artists that were involved rock, they hardly opened up about their actual sexual preference until later on in their careers. Much of their affiliation with homosexuality was actually assumed by the media, critics and their fans. Some of these assumptions were however proven to be correct when the artists later on actually came out as homosexuals but initially this had just been speculations. Early in glitter rocks artists’ expression about being homosexuals was part of their image, part of the wow factor and a way in which they would be able to receive more attention from the media for being something new different which might have received either good or bad reactions from their initial fan base. ......
