We live in a society where integrity has become a decaying business ethic. In the scenario for this unit we find Dalman and Lei facing an integrity check, when they are reported by one of their managers that a government inspector stated he would be willing to approve a violation of a new law, based on new local health codes, by one of Sandwich Blitz locations, in exchange for catering services to his department’s holiday party. In this particular situation, the first demonstration of integrity has already been displayed by the location’s manager with the mere fact of him reporting the incident to Dalman and Lei. But the integrity test does not end there, in fact, that is just the beginning. In Sherman’s article Rethinking Integrity, one of the eight steps towards integrity is stated as “Doing the right thing: With the awareness of what’s right comes the obligation of right action. That means embodying our convictions—and accepting the consequences”.

Based on Sherman’s Eight Steps towards Integrity, on his article Rethinking Integrity Leader to Leader, the manager at this location demonstrated one of the eight steps by doing the right thing. On reporting the issue instead of accepting the offer to bribe the inspector he is fulfilling his obligation of right action. J.C. Watts said “Character is doing the right thing when nobody's looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught”. This manager could have gone along with the bribery and probably save himself a lot of hassles, procedures, and paper work that are now going to come out from correcting the issue at hand. Even though he could have gotten away with it, it was not right to do so. Due to the new local health codes and laws having been issued requiring trash dumpsters to be a minimum distance of 30 feet from the rear entrance of the building, and new land-use laws requiring that all out buildings be at least 6 feet from the property lines. Another strategy would be to secure venture capital to finance an internal expansion by opening more company-owned shops.
