Case Study – ‘The Comeback of Caterpillar, 1985-2001’ in
De Wit & Meyer (2004:755-772)

Addendum to the January 2013 Assessment to be noted by all Centre Tutors and Students submitting this assessment

Following a review of the assessment by the External Examiner and Module Leader it has been agreed that the emphasis on Question 3 of this assessment should be shifted to allow students a greater opportunity to conduct further additional research of their own which can be used to supplement the material contained in the case study and module study pack.

Therefore Question 3 (b) will be amended as below and students will be expected to demonstrate that they have undertaken further research of their own to should how Caterpillar has adapted to strategic change since 2001 and the publication of the case study. It was felt that given the extensive additional material which is available, students should be given the opportunity to demonstrate their personal research skills and enhance the case study material by incorporating their own reasoned views on the company.
To reflect this slight shift in emphasis it has been agreed that the marks for the two elements should be switched to reflect the additional content in Question 3 (b). The mark elements will be Question 3 (a) – 10 marks and Question 3 (b) will be 20 marks.

The question will be as follows:

Question Three: a) What were the major revolutionary changes that shaped Caterpillar’s business system and organisational system between 1985-2001? Which evolutionary changes took place during the same period of time? (10 marks)

b) What seems to be the dominant perspectives at Caterpillar in respect of strategic change since 2001? (20 marks)

The marking criteria will not be affected by this amendment and all other issues relating to the…...

...O que é feito do “THE SIMS”?

Tom Sims

...Name Teacher NAme Tom Sims 11 December 2012 ` Ever wonder who revolutionized downhill snow sports? I can tell you that. One day in school Tom Sims was in his 7th grade shop class and he had to do an engineering project and he wanted to make a skateboard that you could use in the snow. If it wasn’t for Tom Sims I don’t know whether or not there would be snowboarding or even skiing. He is the godfather of snowboarding and aggressive downhill skiing. The way he thought of it is when he couldn’t skate in New Jersey in the winter and that frustrated him. So he invented a ski board, which is a snowboard just with a different name. So that winter he had something to use in the winter and then it just hit. He had owned his own skateboarding shop for a while after he got out of school, and Tony Hawk road for his skateboards, but then he wanted to add his invention in 7th grade to his production list. So he tried to get them on their in the late 1970’s but he didn’t have enough money for it so he had to put it off for awhile, but he didn’t tell anyone about it. Because he wanted it to be a surprise. So then in the early 1980’s he put them on his production line and they called “Sims Snowboards”. It was basically a huge hit when he produced them. People loved it, it was Americas next big thing. After the snowboards came along in the mid 1980’s Tom Sims decided he wanted to spice things up with them. So what he did was wanted to make jumps so u could get big air just like......

Kasus Korupsi Simulator Sim

...I. Adanya......

First Period Worst Period Best Period Last Period Resource Allocation / Managerial Actions What Worked Well What Did Not Work Well Reports Overall Evaluation References………………………………………………………………………………………….. Introduction During the eight periods of the Microsoft SIM Project, our challenge was to make the most effective decisions possible for each round, resulting in superior performance for our project relative to other teams in our class. Our goal as a team was to complete our project with the highest score against the four project success criteria. The four success criteria’s are the following; schedule, budget, functionality, and stakeholder satisfaction with an additional focus on resource allocation. Schedule We participated in the Sims Project simulation for eight periods which followed Auto Supply Inc. (ASI), who is a regional automotive parts supplier, as they updated their antiquated information systems. They were trying to going from an out of date paper system to a strong Internet and e-mail system which linked departments with each other and external stakeholders such as suppliers, customers and distribution services, together effectively and quickly as possible. Their goal was to......

Hw11 Sim Key

...Radio Waves & Electromagnetic Fields SIM Homework Answer Key 1) For this question, use the Radio Waves & Electromagnetic Fields simulation to guide your understanding of how Radio broadcasting and Radio receivers work. This simulation is available at the Physics 1010 Homepage. a) How is the radiating electric field (or electromagnetic signal) produced when radio stations broadcast? Include a description of what is producing the signal as well as the reasoning behind how this could produce a signal. Electromagnetic radiation is produced by accelerating charges. In the radio transmitter, electrons oscillate up and down and are thus accelerating. An electron will exert a force on another electron when they are some distance away, like charges repel. When the electron in the transmitter oscillates up and down, the direction of the force it exerts changes since the source of the force (the oscillating electron) is moving. It takes some time for the change in this direction of the force to be felt since this change is communicated or propagated out at the speed of light. In addition, the horizontal component of this force is canceled by the positive charges in the transmitting antenna. So, the resulting force is an oscillating force that pushes vertically on electrons. This force propagates out as a wave as the signal travels at the speed of light. b) How does your antenna work to detect this electromagnetic signal produced when radio stations broadcast? Include the......

The Sims

...I would like to focus on the last genre, construction. After defining what the constructivist approach symbolizes, I will use the example of the online gaming series, “The Sims,” to show how this genre differs from the academic and entertainment types in terms of content, benefits, and advertising techniques. The construction genre is often also called authoring, for it involves a player who is the writer, builder, or creator. “This constructivist approach focuses less on conveying academic or cultural content and more on providing tools for construction and tinkering… They draw less on explicit educational ideologies or images of play and more on images of mastery and control” (101). This genre integrates both education and entertainment, in a way. The games associated with this category provide children with a toolkit to create simulations. For example, a popular online game is called “The Sims.” It represents a life simulation game, or a “sandbox game,” in that it lacks any defined goals. Players create every physical and even emotional feature of their “Sim.” Directing their moods and satisfying their desires are the only true goals of the game. Building a town or constructing a house for your Sims is also part of the game. Some argue that it lacks educational purposes, but I beg to differ. The Sims certainly satisfies the player in terms of amusement and pleasure, but the game can also be beneficial to a certain degree. It can teach a child how to make effective......

My Evening with Linda Sims

...My Evening with Linda Celeste Sims Last February, my mom took me to an Ailey 1st production at The Kennedy Center in D.C. and I sat on the edge of my seat during the entire performance. My eyes were fixed mainly on dancer Linda Celeste Sims. Her movements across the floor were so graceful that she looked like an angel. I was inspired by her elegant walk and before the evening was over, I was determined to meet her. I really did not know how that was possible but I knew for certain that my mom would make it happen. Fast forward to two weeks later and my amazing mom gave me the news! Mrs. Sims is coming to our house! The director of my dance school had arranged the date for us and I was beyond excited. Linda Celeste Sims was born in 1977 in Haiti. She grew up in Bronx, N.Y. after she was adopted by an American family. She is one of the primary dancers with The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in N.Y. She is one of the most loved and admired dancers in the company which she joined in 1996 at the age of nineteen. In that same year, Mrs. Sims was honored with an award from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and in 2009 she was highlighted in Dance Magazine as one of the “Best of 2009”. As a little girl, Linda Sims had aspired to become a professional dancer. Her goal was to be part of a renowned dance company. She excelled in school while taking dance classes five days a week. Her parents taught her that hard work is necessary to achieve......

This is how radio waves are broadcast. Set it so that both “display the curve” and the “radiated field” boxes are checked. a) What does the curve represent? The line of electrons being sprayed off of the antenna that then cause the receiver electron to move. The path that an electron will follow due to the electromagnetic wave. The evenly spaced electrons moving up and down between the two antennae. The field of negative charges that are moving through space. The strength and direction of the force that would be exerted by the electromagnetic wave on an electron. b) With the frequency set at the mid-point of the slider and the amplitude set at the mid-point of the slider,......
