Why They Serve

...Serving in the Army When reading these three texts about serving in the US Army, it gives three different views on how it is. In the first text by Sarah Palin, it is her son who enlist, to protect and serve his country, or ad she say in the text, he did it because of the younger generation in our family … he wanted them to grow up in a safe world. The most important statement she wants to give to us, is that we should not allow our kids to go in to war, and risk their lives, never knowing if they will be coming home alive or in a casket. On the other hand se can´t seem to understand why those kids chose to enlist in the first place, why not stay home and get a collage degree and take care of your family. Then if we take a look at text number two by David Zucchino, he talks about a man who have come home from service, and no longer is the same as before…..today he sufferers from PTSD which he will never recover completely from, the main focus of this text is to tell us that the soldiers who do service in the US Army and who has been sent in to war, never becomes the same when they come home, there are almost no offers for them, no treatment. It is also the story about a father that allowed his son to go in to war, and risk his life… as the father says in the end of the text…..”I wish he had never gone in”. Last but not least we got text number 3 written by, Joel Pitney, this time it is about the making of a marine officer, the main character in this text is lieutenant......

...Text: “I Will Serve” Subtopic: Will You Serve? Scripture: Foundation Scripture: Joshua 24: 14-16 Joshua 24    And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.  And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.  And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.  And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.  I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.  And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.  And when they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.  And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into......

Smart Grid

...The Smart Grid is a decentralized and interactive system. The interactive nature will involve two-way communication between the utility companies and the consumer. Through Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) consumers are able to make better energy use decisions, defer usage to off-peak periods, and contribute power to peak period usage. Utilities will be better able to detect problems within their own systems and react quickly to replace power sources from multiple possible sources. The “Prices to Devices” concept, based on the premise that energy is priced in real time, allows for ongoing transmission of power availability and pricing to “smart” home controllers and devices. The devices can interpret this information to alter energy usage accordingly – to defer usage to more amenable and less expensive times. The current U.S. power grid is no doubt an amazing machine, but it has many limitations and poses many challenges. One main drawback of the current system is that it was built to move power in one direction – from the plant to the consumer. Years ago this made sense, but today it limits the ability to handle power generated from wind turbines and solar panels. The smart grid uses two-way communication, which handles excess distributed power as well as detects and avoids potential power outages. Currently, power companies rely on customers to tell them if there is an outage or problem. The smart grid automatically detects the problem and instantly......

Smarts

...Intelligence I have this theory about intelligence. It's an over-simplified theory but here it is... There are three basic levels of intelligence. The first level consists of people who are not smart enough to know anything about the complexities of the universe and the deep suffering humanity has endured since its beginning. These people, unaware of the dark or disappointing aspects of existence, take blissful pleasure in small, insignificant things like a sunny day or a blueberry waffle. They spend their days with dumb looking grins on their faces, talking about unimportant, simple pleasures. The second level of intelligence is made up of people who are smart enough to have a notable understanding of those complexities of the universe and that deep suffering that humanity has endured. With their grasp on the bleakness of existence, they see no emotion in a sunny day, knowing full well that emotions are nothing more than chemical reactions in our brains, triggered by our environment to help dictate our actions in ways that might benefit our species. They fail to see the point in that blueberry waffle, knowing that at any given time, uncounted people around the world are dying of hunger caused by corruption. People within the third level of intelligence are also aware of these detailed and dreary points of our world. They understand the moral failure that so much of our planet endures. They know about the distant, permanently undiscovered details of the universe......

Book Smart or Street Smart

...Stephanie Collado Professor Gronsky ENG 103 Book smart or Street smart From when we were little kids to grown adults it is put in our heads that education is the most important experience to have in our life. It lets you be able to achieve any dreams and goals that you want. On the other hand there are people who are successful without school education and succeeded in receiving their careers with talent and hard work. This is what people call street smarts, things that people learn from their own personal experiences or what they see markets more in the social world. People argue that if you don’t go to college and get a degree you won’t have success or wealth, and some people argue that not going to college gives you more freedom and is less time consuming. Having street smarts helps people understand each other better on a more personal level then being judged on how smart or dumb the person is based on a degree. College isn’t accessible to everyone; some people have to be really smart or born into a wealthy family to attend. Having a college education gives people a professional look and the confidence to get a good paying job that will help support their lifestyle. College also lets people express themselves, letting them become comfortable in being social and speaking in front of large groups of people. When going to college some people don’t realize that they are taking out a loans and debts that they’ll have to set an exact plan......

Called to Serve

...Called to Serve, Saved to Serve, Living on Mission with God: During a recent trip to Mexico City, I had the opportunity to visit a church planted by a church planter who was trained by the Bible League. The church has been using our Project Philip program as a way of mobilizing members more effectively to reach their families and communities for Christ. A woman by the name of Gabriella Villa and her husband were two of those people reached through this outreach. Serve Others

...Serve others, be happy By: Mahar Mangahas Philippine Daily Inquirer 10:51 pm | Friday, August 31st, 2012 Share on facebook_likeShareTweet 14 Despite his great worth as a man for others, Jesse Robredo was only moderately popular with the voters, relative to other national leaders. His survey ratings (if he even noticed them) were not enough to favor him to win a Senate seat in 2013.  But clearly, he expected no other reward than being happy to serve others.   Now the call is for everyone to be a Robredo. How many Filipinos are capable of heeding it? I am optimistic that the potential number is large, based on some data about Filipino altruism, recorded in the World Values Survey (WVS) of 2001.   Altruism in the Philippines, 2001. The WVS-2001 had a battery of questions as to how important were several matters in the lives of the respondents.  Of seven matters tested, the three with the highest percentages calling it Very Important in their lives were “family” (99), “work” (94) and “religion” (87).   In the middle of the seven matters was “serving others,” which 57 percent of Filipino adults called Very Important. Such Filipinos are altruists. There is no doubt that Jesse Robredo was one of them.   The three other matters in the battery, with lower percentages calling them Very Important, were “friends” (37), “politics” (22), and “leisure time” (15).   Aside from the 57 percent altruistic, another 37 percent called serving others  Rather Important, and 6......

The Tennis Serve

...The Tennis Serve By: Brayden Bennell Harloff 7/8 5/18/2015 What do you need to do to make sure you have a successful tennis serve? Sure practice will help, but truly the secret lies in different muscles in your arms, abs, and most importantly legs. Legs? Why Legs? In this presentation I will show you why and how you can maximize your ability in your serve. To begin with a successful serve, look for a racquet that has a grip that fits the size of your hand, this will maximize grip as well as momentum through the swing of your stroke. The serve is a full body motion, not just an upper body move, if one thing is off the whole serve will be different than expected. I suggest the Babolat Aero Drive tennis racquet for powerful serves, as being one of the heavier performance racquets on the market it will provide more power and control to your shots. You will be amazed with what 10.9 ounces can do for your game. To start I would lift small weights of 5-10 pounds daily in the swing of the serve, this will help strengthen all the muscles you actually use when you serve the ball. Believe it or not, the main muscles in your arm don’t take a part in what makes a powerful serve, it’s the muscles that are hidden and are significantly smaller than the bicep, and tricep. But enough about that, now that you know some tips lets move on to the knowledge and mental aspect of the serve. Your mental game in tennis is more important than anything else, if you don’t believe and get down on......

Smart Cities

...Smart Cities will be the biggest enabler of Internet of Things Before going on and on about the mentioned subject, a question must be answered. What is a smart city? A smart city is a city where modern technologies and advanced resources are used to uplift the standard of living with the society. The target is achieved with better resource management and adapting methods that are more in accordance with the environment. A smart city is a city which has lower levels of pollution and other adverse effects on the biosphere and environment around it. It might sound something of similitude from science fiction of some perfect utopian future where robots serve as personal comfort assistants of the Human race, people travelling in flying cars or any such levitated contraptions and where we have trade relations with beings from another part of the Universe. To the contrary of the previous sentence, smart cities are not a part of a distant utopian future, but are happening now and the World Wide Web of the Internet has been the greatest tool in achieving it. In fact there are examples of Smart cities in the past such as Bletchley Park, where Professor Alan Turing deciphered the infamous Nazi cipher Enigma machine during World War II. Alan Turing who is often called the father of modern computing, is only fitting that he too once lived in a smart city that changed the course of history and we know and live now. Compared to the early 21st century, our way of living, at least in the......

...BOOK SMARTS OR STREET SMARTS THE ON GOING DEBATE TODAY AMONG CORRECTION OFFICERS REBECCA KIRBY PROFESSOR STEPHEN N. KNIGHTS, JR. OCTOBER 18, 2014 INTRODUCTION This paper will be discussing the debate on whether or not higher education in law enforcement officers should be mandatory and the effect it can have in the correctional facilities. It will also have insight from a local police officer on the education debate. As of today, only two states, Minnesota and Wisconsin require a police officer to obtain at least an associate’s degree. Other states carry a much lower standard, only asking for a high-school diploma or a GED to satisfy their requirements. It is often said that the criminal justice system and corrections are a booming business. Over the past two decades, the need for staff has increased and the need for education has also increased. But is it street smarts you need or is it book smarts? TOPIC: WORK ETHICS As a correctional officer there are many things that go into what they do. They have to be professional, understanding, logical, compassionate, intelligent, and reasonable. A correctional officer has many jobs while on duty and the police department asks a lot of them. Determining if an officer needs to have a college education is difficult. Debate on this controversy has led to the study of work ethics surrounding officers who do have some sort of formal education. This research dates back to the 1930s by August Vollmer and......

It is the first of its kind with a long history and possibly an even longer future. It all started when the idea and the proposal for a connecting road from Blacksburg to Interstate 81 was introduced in 1985. Roanoke Mayor Noel Taylor favored the idea introduced by Roanoke-Virginia Tech Advisory Council in 1986. The following year the Department of Transportation was asked to consider short and long-term answers for traffic jamming along Route 460. Governor Gerald Beliles’ identified a new road to serve as a direct link between Virginia’s largest university and southwest Virginia’s largest city. In 1988, the study of Route 460 for......
