Stress Reflection

According to the CDC, “Job stress is defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker”. Job stress can also cause someone to a decline in a person’s health and/or cause injury to a person. Our bodies are designed to deal with stress with autonomic responses. No matter what kind of stress that our body experiences it automatically responds with the fight or flight response. This can cause people to have an increase in heart rate and blood pressure and that isn’t good for the heart because it’s being overworked. Stress leads to people not being able to sleep, which can result into a person not being able to think clearly and make adequate decisions. A person could experience heart palpitations, tension in their muscles, headaches, and even gastrointestinal upsets. A person could also experience psychological symptoms from job stress such as feeling unable to cope, depression, anxiety, and cognitive difficulties. An example of job stress could be something such as an employee being overworked, a teacher loses a co-worker or student to death or even relationships that are intimate with co-workers that go bad. There are many different causes for job stress but it is agreed that it’s a result from two factors. According to the CDC, “Nearly everyone agrees that job stress results from the interaction of the worker and the conditions of work”. Some causes of job stress for a person being over worked could be long hours, a heavy workload, duty changes, deadlines, and lack of proper equipment to finish a task. If a teacher loses a student or co-worker to death, this could be caused by a crisis incident, which teachers had to deal with in the Newcombtown, Pa shooting. Then I learnt that emotional intelligence is all about the ability to recognize and control their own emotions as well as recognize and respond appropriately to emotions of others. These words helped solve the puzzle for me. Though it seemed I can handle with the pressure calm and composed by controlling my emotions, I experienced depression, frustration, suffering, and great stress in my heart under those situations and even after. Why? Perhaps the reason is that I am never capable of identify and care for my own emotions. My “seemingly” good emotion control actually comes from ignorance of my emotions. How can one control his emotion without fully understand it? The test also showed though I was good at diagnosis and recognizes the emotions of others, I failed to act initiatively and respond to their emotions. What is the point of recognizing other’s emotions without responding supportively to them? I knew that I have to improve my EQ. Though I did not track my emotion through the course of the day, I became aware of my emotions: I chose to face directly my stress, sad, and even anger, and I wrote them in my diary or talk with my friends about my emotions and propose my ways to manage them . Stress can come from many things such as failing a test, getting into a car accident, and even a break up with a significant other. These glucocorticoids are epinephrine and cortisol, which both accelerate immune cells to move from the bloodstream into the tissue if needed to fight against an infection, and when the infection is gone, they return the body to homeostasis. When a person is in stress, these glucocorticoids do the same thing as if they were fighting an infection; however, if the body is in constant stress, it will continue to "fight the infection" and will not return the body to homeostasis. This can cause glucocorticoid receptor resistance and can cause the body to develop an even higher risk of depression, upper respiratory infections, diabetes, autoimmune disease, slower healing, and even cardiovascular disease (1). ...Stress Journal Reflection Paper After having reviewed my Stress Journal assignments for this class, I have noticed that my methods for handling stress have changed. Learning what stress is and the body’s reaction to stress have attributed to this, but also learning methods that I had not thought of or did not know of has also helped me. Not only have I been able to cope with stress quicker, I have also been able to reduce the amount of stress in my life. In the past, if I was confronted with a stressor, I would just try to ignore it or push it to the back of my mind to deal with later. This is a very unhealthy response. It causes even more stress to build up in your body and for the stressor to become a bigger situation than it would have been had you dealt with it right away. In my second and third journal entries, as opposed to the first, I tried to stay in the moment and deal with the stressor at that time. It was much easier to handle and confront the issue rather than dealing with it later and letting my stress reactions have more time to start and run their course. Because of this, I don’t have to deal with the same stressor multiple times. I can deal with it once and move on to something else. Another method that I had not utilized in the past, but started utilizing in the first journal, was the deep breathing technique.
