The Adkins Diet vs. the South Beach Diet

The Adkins diet is famous for claims of weight loss, but the South Beach diet is said to be a more heart healthy choice for dieters. Most diets are hard to follow, and have so many restrictions on food that people often get fed up and revert to their old eating habits, instead of continuing with a new diet plan. A diet that restricts certain foods may be setting a dieter up for failure, when they give into temptation, and indulge in their favorite foods not included in their diet. The Adkins and South Beach diet offer a variety of foods that include healthy and tasty choices, even for the pickiest eaters. Both diets are similar, and start out with an induction phase that restricts the foods you eat, and lasts about two weeks. The Adkins diet relies solely on counting the total number of carbohydrates you eat in a day, and the South Beach diet relies on the size and portion of carbohydrates eaten each day. Both diets result in about the same number of carbohydrates per day, but are calculated using different methods. So, let`s explore the reason we want to lose weight in the first place.
First, we all want to improve our current health and prolong our lives. Unfortunately, because we tend to eat unhealthy foods, we experience weight gain and are acceptable to health related problems, such as high cholesterol. Changing your eating habits to include healthy food choices can lower bad cholesterol (LDH) and increase good cholesterol levels (HDL). Healthy food choices can also promote an increased metabolism, which will help you burn more calories and lose those unwanted pounds. One of the biggest benefits to losing weight, besides getting back into those old skinny jeans, is the boost in self esteem. Having a healthy…...

Vegetarian Diet vs. Omnivorous Diet

...Vegetarian Diet Vs Omnivorous Diet Vegetarian: a person who does not eat meat or fish, and sometimes other animal products, especially for moral, religious, or health reasons (Oxford). Evolution dictates undisputedly the fact that in order to survive all animals including human beings must consume the by-products of DNA (Evolution). Since living organisms (i.e. Plants &/or Animals) are the only provisions for DNA, their consumption is vital in securing a position in the cycle of life. For many, taking on the role of a vegetarian is far from thought. It may be because of the great difference in taste between the two that separates a person from even the slightest cooperation with the idea or the simple but vast feeling of the unwillingness to change something that’s working. Some might even argue that an herbivorous diet is no where near as healthy as an omnivorous diet. Well, the truth is, a vegetarian diet can indeed actually prove to be healthy. Once it is carefully and properly planned out, of course. In fact the design of a human’s intestinal tract, being long and all places homo-sapiens more in the category of herbivorous than carnivorous. As longer intestines allow herbivores more time to break down and assimilate tough-to-break-down plant fiber (Walker, 2006). A diet absent of meat can prove to be more advantageous than the contrary; as it consists of lower levels of total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol which allows for a lower risk of obesity, coronary heart......

...Introduction: Insulin resistance is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), both independently and in association with the metabolic syndrome. Impaired insulin sensitivity has been documented in those known to be at risk for diabetes, such as normoglycemic first-degree relatives of people of T2DM, and women with history of gestational diabetes. Although present in most people who developed T2DM, insulin resistance is generally present for many years before changes in blood glucose concentrations are evident. Despite possible influences from genetic and perinatal factors, diet and physical activity are likely to have greater and overriding influence in generation of the metabolic syndrome and T2DM. Dietary intakes of vegetable fat, polyunsaturated fatty acid, dietary fiber (particularly cereal fiber), magnesium, and caffeine are significantly inversely correlated and intakes of trans fatty acid and heme-iron, glycemic index, and glycemic load are significantly positively correlated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes (Murakami K et al J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo) 2005; 51:292-310). Studies have shown a significantly decreased risk for T2DM with the higher consumption of grain (particularly whole grain), and significantly increased risk with processed meat consumption (J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo) 2005; 51:292-310). Increased obesity is associated with insulin resistance. Other important factors contributing to insulin resistance......

...Natural Weight Loss and Diet Pills Taking diet pills could bring immediate results; however, eating healthy foods and exercising regularly is the best way to lose weight. The body can maintain its ideal weight when it is focused by a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle consists of eating nutritional foods as well as exercising regularly. Developing a new style of eating will show that food preferences will slowly change when high sugar and high fat snacks are cut out; cravings will go away in time. The body needs healthy food to function properly. Choosing foods from the four main food groups can be a guide for creating balanced and nutritional meals. By choosing to eat healthy, there is more room for enjoyment. Instead of the typical three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), a person can eat four to five small proportional meals each day. The weight gain and loss will be controlled as long as the person does their homework. Counting the calorie food intake is necessary to be sure that a person consumes 1,200 to 2,000 calories a day. Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day and a large glass of water with meals as well as after a meal can help control appetites and metabolize fat. The day should begin with a healthy breakfast. This consists of foods such as eggs, which contain protein, orange juice that has vitamin C, and one slice of toast to give the body fiber. To help with hunger building up, try eating about two snacks between meals. However, it is......

Bodybuilder vs. Aerobic Athlete Diets

...Learning Experience 1.1 Kristen Sullivan Bodybuilder vs. Aerobic Athlete Diets I chose to compare the diets and nutritional needs for Professional Bodybuilders Jay Cutler and Arnold Swertzenegger, as well as Marathon runners Hal Higdon and Ryan Hall’s diet. My findings with the Bodybuilders diets are they are both very similar to one another. First off both diets consist of many meals throughout the day that are very high in protein (about 30-50g every 3 hours). Although Arnold Stays away from eggs, Jay eats 10 eggs a day. And as far as other protein sources they are very similar as they both use Whey Protein drinks and eat only lean meats including Chicken, Fish, and steak. Both Jay and Arnold stick to eating carbohydrates early in the day before workouts and try to stay away from them later in the day. Both diets consist of 15%F/40%P/45%C. As for the two Marathon runner’s diets, while training Ryan eats close to 6,000 calories a day which consists of a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein. Hals diet on the other hand is a little different and consists of 20%F/30%P/50%C. While Ryan’s diet is a lot higher in carbohydrates and lower in protein they are very similar to one another in that they both drink close to 3 gallons of water a day to stay hydrated pre, during, and after running. They also both find it very important on the time of the day they eat their meals and make sure to eat 5-6 smaller meals per day. Both diets are adequately supplied with vitamins, minerals,......

...The Paleo Diet The Paleo Diet or Paleolithic Diet is referred to as the Caveman Diet, the Stone-age Diet, and the Hunter-Gatherer Diet. It is not about tearing chunks of meat off animals. It is about type of foods that are eaten. The Paleo Diet is the healthiest way a person can eat because it is the only nutritional approach that works to help stay lean, strong and energetic. Researchers indicate that the modern diet which is full of refined foods, trans fats and sugar cause diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and infertility. Scientific research studies show that diets rich in Omega-3 and Monounsaturated fats will reduce these diseases dramatically. Some of these foods include lean proteins for strong muscles and healthy bones and it satisfies hunger between meals. Fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants decrease the development of degenerative diseases. Also, healthy fats from nuts, seeds, olive oil and grass fed meats reduce these diseases (Wolf, 2014). The purpose of the Paleo Diet is to eat a low sugar diet to avoid inflammation. High sugar and high starchy foods turn into sugar and produces inflammation. Cells can absorb so much sugar before becoming inflamed and hormones control blood sugar so a person will not pass out (miraclenoodle.com, 2014). The fact that the Paleo Diet delivers the best results is the fact that most people needs. It improves blood lipids, weight loss and reducing pain is......

Healthy Lifestyle What is the best way to lose weight and is there such a thing as a miracle diet? I have asked myself this question many times over the past sixteen years. All though school I was considered the skinny girl then when I started gaining weight it just kept coming. Diet fads are all the rage, and I have tried most of them that are on the market with some results but they never stay. So I started asking myself what is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. I had to come to the realization that there is no overnight miracle and it all takes hard work. In order to achieve a goal weight and maintain weight, miracle diets are less effective than making healthy lifestyle changes. The first thing I have learned along my weight loss search is that calories are an important factor. All diets are based on a calorie count but what is the correct calories a body needs. The calories the body consumes in a day is different for each person. To figure out how many calories a body needs to......

Diet

...Many diets have been developed to help people lose weight. However, many of these diets were developed without the input of dieticians or doctors, which makes them potentially dangerous. Understanding the pros and cons of a diet are vital to increasing the chances of success. One of the most popular diets in the last ten years is known as the South Beach diet, developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston. Unlike many competing diets, a famous cardiologist developed the South Beach diet. His medical training helped him develop a diet that follows medical guidelines and is not extremely dangerous if followed accurately. The diet requires the person to eat high-fiber, low-glycemic carbohydrates, unsaturated fats, and lean protein. His method categorizes carbohydrates and fats as good or bad, based on how much the food will affect weight. Unlike other diets, it does not restrict calorie intake. However, it does include an exercise program, which works to burn off existing calories. While many people promote the South Beach diet, it is not considered to be side effect free. The first stage of the diet aims for rapid weight loss by cutting water weight. The change in weight due to the loss of water can throw off the electrolyte balance and severely dehydrate the person. Other critics believe that the lack of dietary fiber, which is known to aid in weight loss, can have a negative affect on the body. Also, certain doctors believe that the glycemic index, on which the diet is based, is not...

Diet vs. Exercise

...as nutrition intake, time consumption and mental effects must be factored in. The human body requires nutrition to function properly. Nutrition repairs muscles, organs and skin. Exercise with no diet does not provide the proper nutrition that is essential to the body (Paez & Kravitz, 2000). Exercising and burning calories is important to recover the body with the proper nutrients. However, it defeats the purpose of exercise when somebody's daily food intake is above or below his or her suggested nutrition. Therefore, the nutrient intake with just exercise and no diet does not fuel the body inadequately. The appropriate amount of nutrients is consumed while dieting properly. Nutrients are required for the body to function appropriately. Essential nutrients are something the body can’t produce or can’t produce in an adequate amount of time on its own. Essential nutrients can only be provided by a proper diet. These nutrients include water, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat. (National Institute, 2012). There are recommended daily nutrients depending on an individual’s sex, age, weight, height and lifestyle. The time it would take to lose weight with just exercise is much lengthier than with a diet. This is when the common saying, “no one can out exercise a bad diet” comes into play. Lets say somebody is consuming 600 more calories than they are burning; in order to be in energy balance, they must exercise. Exercise expends way fewer calories than people......
