Trash

...May 30, 2012 Trash Why are there so many landfills in America? It is because the amount of trash that the people put out is too high. All of this trash that we put out is adding up into our landfills, end up being burned, or even flow out into our oceans. Since most things that you put out into our trash are not biodegradable, these landfills will continue to grow and grow over time. Such things will have a negative impact on the environment. Though you can’t see the impact of it now, it’s going to hit us like a ton of bricks in the future. We can help avoid this fate by simply eating less food, recycling more and to use more biodegradable packaging. There are many ways that we can reduce the amount of trash we produce as people. One main way is to eat less food. In this day and age not much food is sold without some sort of paper or plastic packaging covering the item. If you just lower the amount of food we eat we can drastically lower the amount of trash produced as a whole and lower our weight leading to healthier life styles. Based on values in 2001 the USA produced 409,029,000 tons of trash. In the same year there was a population of 286,345,000. This equates to roughly 1.43 tons per person, that’s 2860 pounds of trash per person. Now how to distinguish between trash from people vs. the trash produced by factories and other large companies is hard. Of these 409,029,000 tons of trash only 32 percent was recycled, leaving behind 278,139,720 tons of trash. In one year......

...pregnancies, which means about 3 out of 10,000 woman. If you ask me, every other reason to take a life should be considered invalid. There are over 1.5 million Americans that desperately want children, so there is no reason adoption shouldn't be considered. While there may be unwanted pregnancies, there is no such thing as an unwanted child. With all things considered, it should be clear that abortion is unnecessary. Choice is not murder, and murder is not choice. Life is not trash, life is never a mistake, and life shouldn't be based on circumstance. We are blessed with so many opportunities that every unborn child should be given such as love, family, friendship and freedom. Every heart starts the rhythm of purpose when it begins to beat not too long after conception and every child has one. Many would love to have the honor of having a such a miracle; therefore, adoption should take the place of abortion. Not only does it give the woman a choice, but the child as well. In any event, babies are gifts, not trash....

...  Abstract This essay will cover the history of Municipal solid waste (MSW) as well as how their facilities have changed due to environmental reforms. Various types of waste facilities will be defined along with what has been changed to help keep the environment and population safe from the hazardous chemicals. Lastly, one facility will be explored and their preventative measures will be explored.   Municipal Solid Waste Solid waste is a persistent, part of our lives, yet it goes unnoticed. Today, many countries are facing an approaching crisis in the management of solid waste as many waste disposal sites are nearing their capacity and the contents are continually degrading the environment. However, new and advanced solid waste management systems can help to reduce solid waste disposal, and subsequently minimize environmental and health impacts. Unlike decades before, new legislation has been proposed, and highly regulated to ensure better management of waste. Most widely referred to as nuisances, open dump sites can be found on both private and public property; sides of the road, ditches, river/creek beds, secluded forest/woods, back yards, and empty lots. (Illinois EPA, 2011). All of these hazards can cause detrimental harm to plant and wildlife habitats as well as significantly reduce the quality of life in the nearby communities. (Illinois EPA, 2011), (Hamilton County Public Health, 2007) The early landfills were heavily associated with environmental problems.......

Trash Talk

...recycling causes toxic gas that pollutes the air. The effects of not recycling can be very dangerous to the eco system and to the health of all living things. When stationed in Northern Italy, I received a citation from the city for not following the directions and placing the trash in the correct location, which definitely made me learn about recycling. Being used to the garbage laws in Colorado, I did not understand the recycle programs in a foreign country. Italian recycling was actually easy, efficient and required by law. The disposal service furnished households with containers labeled for glass and aluminum, paper and cardboard, plastics, and organic waste. Easy to follow instructions came with the first service that that explained when, where, and how to divide the materials. My recyclable items (trash) were picked up weekly outside of my house without any hassle and cost about $15 a month. Recycling programs in Europe made sense and remained simple. Everywhere you go, there are bins marked for what needs to go where and you just drop your waste in the corresponding bins. Recycling in Italy remained easy and efficient compared to some places here. I currently live in Pueblo West, Colorado, where my trash disposal cost almost $20 per month and that does not include recycling. To recycle, we have to use our own containers, take it to a recycling center at our convenience and pay the place to take our recyclables. I think that there are much better programs for......

...engage in trash talking their opponents in order to gain a psychological advantage. The players do not always know the negative effects that trash talking can lead to. In the local 16 and up recreational softball league, there is a team that does a lot of trash talking. The end of the season meeting is coming up, and one of the coaches is debating if he should take action in trying to end the trash talking. I believe that a policy should go into effect with penalties and rules for teams to follow in order to provide fans with a healthy game atmosphere. Trash talking has become very common in many sporting events. Players tend to act as if they can say whatever they want to, whether it is on the field or on the court. Just because it is a game, does not make it right to do so. Trash talking may seem innocent to the person saying it, but it can actually greatly hurt the one it is being directed towards. All players are not able to ignore trash talking as well as others might be. This can especially be the case if an individual is new to sports or not used to being around trash talk. Trash talking can do more damage than just mess up a player’s performance. Trash talking can hurt a person both mentally and physically. A person who is used to having trash talking statements directed at them could start to lose a great amount of confidence they once had. With this pattern developing, many players could lose hope and desire for sports that they once loved. If trash......

The Lack of Awareness of Overconsumption of Los Angeles Residents

...of Los Angeles Residents Last year the Advance Science, Serving Society reported that 4.8 to 12.7 millions metric tons of trash enter the ocean. America, the country has the well-developed infrastructure to handle the waste, contributed 40,000 to 110,000 metric tons per year. The improved life quality and the increase resource consumption as the society gets more modern have posed the negative impact on the environment. Moreover, the waste management is far beyond the handling of the government and the agencies because there are never enough landfills for 25 percents of world trash in America (Humes). In the article “Can Psychology Help Save The World? A Model For Conservation Psychology,” Susan Clayton, a professor of psychology at the College of Wooster, and Amara Brook, a professor of Santa Clara University, use psychology to help explaining the human behavior which causes environmental problem. Although the government spends a lot of money on waste management, the lack of awareness of Los Angeles residents causes high volumes of waste, which leads to ocean pollution and health problem. The Los Angeles government spends a lot of money for trash management and controlling the amount of trash. California government spends millions a year to clean trash from their beaches and alley ways. In the article “L.A. lawmakers press for cleanup of city's trash-strewn alleys” by Emily Alpert Reyes, she states, “Now officials are poised to start spending more, with Mayor Eric......

Trash Problem in Naples

...one is the infamous extortion, an illegal way to get money from common citizens by threating them in some ways, including death. Other illegal fields where the mafia is present are the drugs and prostitution rackets. But the Mafia and especially the Camorra act also on many legal sectors of our economy and politic. Many labor unions are fluttered with “Camorristi” which take control of various building and road constructions all over the country trying to make as much profit as possible. From the beginnings of the 90’s the Camorra also took control of the industrial waste in Naples. They started to decide where and how to collect the trash and where to built the landfills. All of this under the eyes of the Italian politicians and the world. In 2008 a huge environmental crisis exploded based on this issue. Roads all over the city were floated with trash and cars could barely access the center of the city. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, after his second reelection decided to start a campaign against this huge environmental issue and especially against this group of Organized Crime. The project never really worked. Still today the problem is present. One of the most beautiful cities in the country is getting ruined by it’s bad administration, where corruption is fully present. The problem is that is becoming a vicious cycle. Politics are more and more involved in this “dirty business” and if we, Italian citizens, do not do something, nothing is going to chance. Now with the......

Short Story - the Trash

...The Trash He looked out of the dirty window, which was covered with fingerprints and dead insects all over. He was sweating in the torn shirt he had put on this morning, before his long journey back to Denmark. He was already excited about his next lunch, rye bread with liver pâté and beetroot, just the way he liked it, just the way he knew it. It reminded him, that he had to go to the grocery before they closed. He had sold his house to fulfill the dream of his life; to become a tour-guide in Africa together with his best friend. His friend, Lasse Henriksen, left back home the week before, when he received a call from his mother, telling him that his dad was found shot on Nørrebrø. Lasse’s dad was a cop, recently celebrating his 30-year anniversary on the force. Lasse had to make it to the funeral, and support his family during the hard time. He hadn’t heard from Lasse since. He had tried reaching him on his cell, but with no luck. Wednesday d. 16th of April 15.09 o’clock Smallville Sigurd was pulled out of his thoughts, when the bus driver announced the final stop threw the speakers of the bus. Sigurd dragged his luggage out of the backdoor of the bus, and the bus went on along the empty and quiet road. He inhaled the fresh air, and felt his stomach sizzling of joy. He finally had reached his destination after a long journey. He had rented a weekend cottage in the edge of the small town of Smallville in the Northern part of Sjælland. He found the description of...

Ankara Under the Trash

...Trash which is one of the main problem in the world in terms of health and environment has been increasing day by day. Not only lack of education but also unplanned urbanization trigger this problem. Ankara which is a large city can be given an example for this problem. When the population of this city increases, the trash problem in that environment will cause many people, animals and the nature to be damagedin the way of health. Trash problem in Ankara become a highly controversial topic between the officials of government and many proffessionals in Turkey. While the officials of government argue that there is not a trash problem in Ankara, the proffesionals and experts support that this problem has been remaining in nowadays in Ankara. Trash which is a global problem has been increasing minacously in Ankara day by day because of lack of awareness and unplanned urbanization. The main reason of trash problem in Ankara is lack of awareness. In today's world, education is not a measurement to specify people who learn what is the good or bad thing. Especially university students who are known as a well-educated people have negative effects in this problem. For example, the picture above is belonged to Ted University's students. This picture is a scene which describes how much well-educated students give importance their area and how these people show an approach to this problem. Therefore, it is not related to university or school, this is related to lack of awareness......

Interstate Shipment of Trash

...Landfills have a unique history since their extensive use began after World War II to concentrate municipal solid waste. They have transformed from simple piles of hazardous, unsanitary trash into reliable, engineered foundations. Even as the annual rate of trash landfilled per capita rises, the amount of landfills has decreased dramatically from twenty thousand in the 1970’s to the remaining two thousand eight hundred today. This is due to the benefit of the interstate shipment of trash in environmental, ethical and economic perspectives. Subtitle D of the Resource and Conservation and Recovery Act requires strict environmental protections. These strict laws lead to the replacement of small landfills with expensive, regional mega landfills that can generate enough trash to afford the technology required to conform to the law. The new privately owned landfills therefore, lead to the interstate shipment of trash since landfills across state borders are more accessible for a city than an inner state landfill. This increase of mega landfills is environmentally beneficial since there are fewer landfills, making it easier to regulate under the more strict laws. New landfills also benefit the environment by converting emitted methane to electricity, compressing more trash into the same volume as old landfills, decreasing ocean dumping and reducing urban areas use of incineration. These engineered landfills also provide sloped cells that allow for a controlled collection of...

Improper Trash Disposal Practices

...In this paper I will describe what constitutes improper trash disposal practices. I will also discuss the health issues that these improper practices could pose to the people of my community in Allenhurst, Georgia. Finally, I will discuss the possible effects that a natural disaster would have to our waste management services and health. Improper trash disposal practices include, but are not limited to, placing household hazardous waste in unapproved containers or areas, littering or illegal dumping, and illegal burning. Household hazardous wastes (HHW) are things that may be toxic, corrosive, highly flammable, or reactive to other materials. An example is pouring antifreeze into the ground or throwing car batteries into your household trash can. According to the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), “The average home can accumulate as much as 100 pounds of HHW in the basement and garage and in storage closets.” Abandoned durables, such as refrigerators, dish washers and other appliances can also be considered HHW. Littering is carelessly discarding trash and may also be caused by animals digging through trash searching for food. This can happen by trash bags not being in appropriate trash containers. Illegal dumping is intentionally discarding trash in unapproved areas, such as privately owned land, vacant lots or even bodies of water such as creeks, ponds, lakes, etc. Illegal dumping was a growing problem in our community a couple of years ago. The tiny dump that......
