* What are the factors that would influence the Federal Reserve in adjusting the discount rate? * The amount of money that is in the reserve determines the discount rate. The quantity of loanable funds supplied must equal the quantity of loanable funds demanded. The discount rate is an implemented rate set by the Federal Reserve (Thornton, n.d.). The discount rate is the interest rate that the Federal Reserve lends to reserve depositories such as Wells Fargo or Chase Morgan. Each depository has a set of reserve requirements. These loans from the Federal Reserve enable them to meet these requirements. An increase in the discount rate means a decrease in the money supply and a decrease in the discount rate means an increase in the money supply. The discount rate is used to influence the economy. The discount rate is used to stimulate the economy. It helps to stop inflation or to increase spending, depending on the current health of the economy. * * * How does the discount rate affect the decisions of banks in setting their specific interest rates? * Since the discount rate controls the amount of money in the reserve it also affects interest rates on loans in the loanable funds market. A lower discount rate means more money supply which also means a lower interest rate. A high discount the rate equals a lower money supply and a higher interest rate. These all control the health of the economy. Interest rates are the prices that are charged or paid for the use of a financial asset (Colander, 2010). Financial assets are key variables in the financial sector and they can consist of either money or credit cards. However, money does not collect interest unless it is from the loanable funds market. In order for money to be considered in the loanable funds market it must be able to return into the loanable funds market for instance, an individual…...

Week Four Individual Paper

...Week Four Individual Paper XXX ACC/290 September XX, 2012 XXX Week Four Individual Paper The current reading supports that commercial accounting and generally accepted accounting principles, strongly advise the accrual basis of accounting versus the cash basis of accounting. The accrual basis of accounting confirms that when transactions alter a business’s financial statements they are recorded during the period that the events happened, regardless if there was an exchange of cash or not. An example of the accrual basis would be businesses who recognize revenues earned, regardless if cash was received or not. The accrual basis also recognize when expenses are incurred, even if cash was not paid. The other potential option to the accrual basis is the cash basis. The major difference between the two accounting basis’, is that under the cash basis a business will record their revenue only at the time that cash is received. Additionally, they record expenses only when cash is received. For these reasons, the cash basis of accounting is not allowed under generally accepted accounting principles. This is due to the fact that the cash basis does not record revenue when it is earned, and therefore violates the principle of revenue recognition. At the same time, the cash basis does not allow for recording the expenses as they occur, which is a violation of the matching principle. The cash basis measures can mislead or misrepresent the true financial picture of a...

Four Day Work Week

...THE FOUR DAY WORK WEEK: Just how effective is it? DOES THE FOUR DAY WORK WEEK LEAD TO INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY? Yasin Mohammed UMUC AMBA 600 Research Paper Abstract The 4 day work week is not a new idea. It is one that has had its share of controversies over the years. Introduced in the 1970’s the idea of the 4 days work week has been making a comeback as of lately. There are several issues to look at here. One of the main statements in regards to it is that productivity will decrease because of fatigue. A 10 hour work day is too long. On the flipside, another of the main issues pointed out by proponents is that productivity will increase because you will have a workforce with higher morale. In this paper, we will discuss these two issues among others in relation to the effectiveness of the 4 day work week. JUST HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE FOUR DAY WORK WEEK Proponents of the four day work week usually state the benefit of work/family balance as one of the main reasons that it should be implemented. They estimate that this balance will lead to happier employees which will lead to increased productivity. Most of the detractors state the long ten hour work days as the main reason why employees will be too tired and fatigued to perform. How can two such different viewpoints arise from the same set of circumstances? It is essential to point out that both of these positions are made with assumptions of a homogenous workforce that requires the same work/life balance......

...MGT 522 Week 4 Discussion #1 Read Taking Sides - Issue 11 - pp. 168-187 and answer the following questions: * How does information overload rob an employee’s quality of work/life? * What do you see as the advantages of working in a 24/7 virtual environment? * What are some alternate perspectives that HRM professionals may pursue to reduce the problems of information overload? Issue 11 deals with the increased dependence on laptops, cell phones, and PDA’s. This has become a serious problem in the workplace due to employees being distracted from work. With the rise of tablets and PDAs and the universal presence of mobile devices in meeting rooms and offices, it’s natural for managers to wonder where this trend is taking American employees. The information overload robs an employee’s quality of life because they are stuck on their laptops, cell phones or PDA’s. By being so consumed by technology they are not getting the work that needs to be done, done. Therefore, employee’s falling behind in the work place increases low performance and it becomes a problem for the HRM. “On average, Intel executives receive 300 emails a day, and Microsoft workers need 24 minutes to return to work after each e-mail interruption” (Rao, P. 2013, p. 171). This is an incredible stat, as it possible shows that once employees have read an email they tend to check social media, such as twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Thus taking them twenty-four minutes to get back to work. If an......

Retirees America’s baby-boomer generation is retiring in record numbers. The Washington Post published an article showing that between 2015 and 2034, more than 80 million Americans will retire. That number translates into more than 10,000 people retiring every day of the year for the next 19 years! Where will those people want to retire? At BuyBelize.com, the thousands of inquiries we receive each week convince us that a growing number of those retirees want to spend their golden years in tropical climates. The evidence is clear.
