What It Takes to Start a Business

...a business but there is much more to the process than just coming up with the initial capital. There are three main points to starting a business. The first one is to decide whether if it is in the best interest of the aspiring entrepreneur to start the business. The second is to choose every detail of how this business is going to run. The third is to find ways to maintain and improve the business efficiently. There is no shortcut to a successful business, but with this list of guidelines and lots of hard work anyone can be headed in the right direction. What is an entrepreneur and how does a person become one? According to Vincent Ryan in his article, “Anatomy of an Entrepreneur,” an entrepreneur is “one who organizes, manages and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise” (36-44). That is exactly what starting a business is, a risk. To avoid this risk, the first thing to think of when starting a business is whether it is in the best interest to run this business. Barbara Weltman said in her book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Starting a Home-Based Business, when choosing a business there is nothing better than to “turn a passion into a product or service.” From there she claimed one should play to their strengths and weaknesses to decide what kind of business to run (17-21). When a business is chosen it is best to know all the ins and outs of that business. According to Mark Warda, knowing the business at hand “might be the most valuable preparation you do.” (3) So......

Take What Is Yours

...Take What is Yours At the present time I am no longer employed but previously when I worked for a large conglomerate the evaluation system we implemented after we merged all our companies was based on several key areas. The Human Resources Manager and myself put together a system after gathering what was bring used at each division we purchased and felt what was best and most contusive to the review process for the individual and the companies and made one standard form. I was involved because I was in the operations department and was highly involved in all the companies and dealt with every employee and knew their needs and concerns and addressed them as needed. We made sure that each employee was able to voice their opinions, their accomplishments, needs, concerns and what they wanted to see for the growing family of companies that were uniting and what areas could be implemented. First we thought it would be helpful to have the employee and the supervisor each fill out an evaluation report. The employees on themselves, which is why it is so critical to keep copies of their work, email, and milestones to use as examples during there review process. We asked them what types of teamwork they participated in, what initiative it took and how they participated in the team projects and what type of work they did outside of their job scope, if they added to their job description and learned anything more and contributed more knowledge to the position and......

What It Takes

... As for writing I never really had to write I always talked face to face with my clients. I had never written an essay before I started college in the September of 2010. I never liked writing because I was not experienced in doing so. Honestly I was scared of having to take Communications. Now I am starting to enjoy writing still not the best at it, but I am getting a lot better compared to what I was. The essay This I Believe I really enjoyed it was my favorite one. Overall I have made a major improvement in my writing capabilities. I have tried the different techniques of brainstorming. I have tried free writing and I didn’t like this technique, because it had no order to it. I like thing having an order. Then I tried the web, I only used it once but I did not care for it much either. But the one that seemed to work the best for me was listing. I liked it because you could list them and group your ideas. Then when I started on my essay things go a lot smoother. One of the most helpful things my Instructor told me was that my biggest challenge as a writer is to keep the errors under control. Then she told me I will get better with practice. My instructor was always good and clear about what I need to do. In each draft my essay got better not as many run together sentences. I have good format for my essays, but I need to pay more attention to my final thoughts when I am done. I also need to proof read before I send them. However I feel that I am getting......

What Does It Take to Be a Good Person?

...common sense, which dictates what to do or not to do in everyday situations. Kindness is another character trait, like integrity, that a good person should have. A person who possesses kindness will usually keep your heart safe and your best interests in mind. Their willingness to help others also translates into someone who knows how to put another’s needs ahead of their own. Everyone is low on self-confidence every now and then, but it is another important characteristic of a good person. A person without self-confidence is usually driven by self-preservation, and will do almost anything to overcome their feelings of inadequacy. This can make them psychotic and distrusting, and almost always ensures dishonesty, a closed heart or inability to experience love and joy, a lack of integrity and no courage. Generosity is the next trait of a good person. Those who constantly complain about the money they do not have, especially while spending it on things that do not serve them, are not only annoying, but no fun to be around. To be a good person, you have to care about others and being a good person in mind, body, and spirit will allow your generosity to thrive. The last characteristic of being a good person is self-awareness. Most people believe themselves to be all kinds of things which they are not. This is due to the fact that they aren’t really all that self-aware, and don’t ever check to see if their idea of who they are actually aligns with what other people feel about them...

What It Takes to Be a Dj

...What It Takes To Be A DJ Being a DJ is not as easy as some may think. There are people out there who dismiss being a DJ as just playing one record after another, which is easy to say if one has never witnessed a DJ in action or even tried it themselves. Yes, it may appear to be easy to the untrained eye, but that’s mainly due to the fact that so many professional DJs make it look like a walk in the park. It’s become second nature to them. Imagine having to play for at least an hour to an expectant audience, an audience that has paid good money to have a good time, and being able to give that audience a good time, using just two decks, a mixer, and music that the DJ has chosen, is quite a skill (Barnes). Few DJs are able to support themselves financially with their DJing alone, and on top of that, they have to spend a lot of time and money on their craft. Of course, there are the obvious pluses; the awe-factor, the parties, the party-boys and girls, the ass-kissing. But there is more to it than that. This is an artform, an expression, a way of life (kbein). Many people dream of becoming a DJ, but to really be a DJ, one must buy the right equipment to handle the big-beat tunes. The first thing a DJ needs to do is to determine the type of gear he wishes to use. Building ones first DJ setup can be a difficult task if the person does not know which equipment to buy. There are four typical DJ setups: 1) computer only; it can be very difficult to DJ with only a computer because......

What It Takes to Be a Leader

...like family and are there for them. Therefore, you must take the first step. Understand that others can perform some of your duties as well or better than you can. Loosening the strings doesn't diminish your importance; it increases it. And continue to remind yourself that, with only so many hours in a day or week, you are limited by those hours. Start to practice hands-off management. Every day, give your employees more tasks and responsibilities. It's perfectly OK to tell them how you handle each such task and, of course, tell them why you do some things a certain way. Then, reassure them that you want them to experiment, to find better ways of producing the product, delivering the service, billing the client, and generating new sales. Let them know several important things. You expect and respect failure. That you learned from your mistakes and they will learn from theirs. Remind them of the great confidence you have in them. And pledge to them that you are there to help if they run into trouble. Let them know that although business has been good up to this point, it can't get better without even more help from them When we talk about hiring the best person, we don't necessarily mean the candidate with the greatest paper resume or the one who's attended the finest university. What we're suggesting is that you have your antennae up for the person who most impresses you with his or her understanding of your vision and what the journey ahead looks like. On the other hand,......

Speach: What Does It Takes to Be Good Parents

...ears and I would try my best to interest you with my speech about parenting. Perhaps before I begin my speech, I hope you will forgive me if I just remind you about the missing of our MAS Flight MH370 which until now, nobody knew what happens to them. Few month back then, the mainstream media reported and follows the Tweet of Maira Nari, 17 years old daughter of Andrew Nari, one of the crew for that unlucky flight. “Come home fast dad, it’s the only thing I want” “Daddy, Liverpool is winning the game. Come home, so you can watch the game! You never miss watching the game. What Does It Take to Be a Good Parent

...There are many different things that I take into consideration when it comes to parenting. Parents have many different responsibilities but there are three in particular that I think are very important. Being a good role model is important, as well as listening to your children and disciplining them appropriately. If you want to be a good parent you have to put your kids first. The first responsibility that I think is very important is being a good example for your kids. Parents are examples for their kids whether they like it or not. My boys watch and copy everything that I do, and even if I don’t think their listening they are listening. If they see me finishing school and working a good job that’s what they will expect to do themselves because that is all that they know. Children are like sponges. I want to show my kids how to be a good person by being a good person myself. As a parent I want my children to know that they can be anything they want to be, but at the same time I am controlling their physical and moral environment so that they can be good people. I want them to be in an environment where they can develop habits of honesty, generosity, and responsibility. I think that one of the greatest things that I can do for my kids is to take them seriously and listen to them. My five year old is constantly showing me everything that he learns and it’s very easy to tune him out sometimes, but I think its very important not to. It is important to listen because if you......

What Are the Skills and Competencies Needed for the 21st Century Entrepreneur?''

...The emphasis on knowledge, service, and information in the new economy creates space for more new firms to emerge, and exerts pressures on existing companies to hire employees with higher level skills in order to compete successfully. The increased demand for a highly skilled workforce has contributed to the rising importance of obtaining a college education. However, recent studies indicate that newly hired college graduates do not excel in these higher-level knowledge and information based skills at the level that employers desire. Entrepreneurs have also indicated that the shortage of highly skilled workers inhibits the growth and development of new entrepreneurial firms. In response to this there have been multiple calls for educators at all levels to recognize the challenges and opportunities in today’s economy and to ensure that students develop the “21st century” knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) they need. A closer look at these 21st century KSAs alongside research and data on entrepreneurial competencies reveals a meaningful overlap between the two. This overlap can be developed into a useful heuristic to determine appropriate outcomes for assessment of undergraduate entrepreneurship programs. Sample outcomes and program assessment processes are illustrated and discussed. INTRODUCTION As the “new” economy of the 21st century continues to develop around knowledge, service, and information based activities, a company’s ability to create and......

What Causes Users to Take on an Avatar

...What causes internet users to take on an Avatar An avatar is a representation of one's self online. When utilizing the world wide web many persons choose to use an avatar instead of presenting their authentic selves. They are often used in online video games and on various sites that require some sort of user representation. There are many reasons for using avatars, these range from security and privacy to insecurity and a medium of escape. Avatars are a means of expression for some people, They allow for users to portray themselves the way they view or in some cases would like to view themselves. Avatars are often given a bad name and in some cases are frowned upon. Some argue that they are a misrepresentation of self and are a dangerous deception to others who assume the avatar to be a true representation of its user. Avatars act as front line security especially in the online gaming world. They make it safe for people to interact with each other with minimal risk of security breeches. It can be argued that the use avatars are not a full proof protection plan from online predators but they help is masking true identity. This, however, can be a double edged sword since the identities of other users are masked as well. When it comes the privacy avatars play a vital role, especially for younger internet users. As Sherry Turkle pointed out younger internet users are willing to share personal information online with no safeguards. With the use of avatars there is a......

What It Takes to Be a Sergeant

...Btry, 2nd BN 4th FAR 12 July 2012 What Does it Mean to be a Sergeant? A sergeant is given the responsibilities and trustworthiness to teach, mentor, and train the lower enlisted. Through the ranks of private to specialist, the title is given to you if you meet the “time in service” and “time in grade” requirements, and as long as you stay out of trouble, and you have done what has been asked of you. Unlike those ranks, sergeants have to prove themselves in front of his or her leadership. They have to prove to the board that they have what it takes to become a sergeant. It is commonly said that the reasons that the younger enlisted do what they do is because they are “privates” and that they don’t know better. When you achieve the rank of sergeant, that all goes out the window. Sergeants are expected to get things done without being told to do so; it’s called taking the initiative. We all would like for our soldiers to take the initiative to get things done, but for most of the time, it won’t get done unless he or she has been told to do so directly. As a sergeant, your section chief or platoon sergeant shouldn’t have to tell you what needs to be done all the time. You usually know what needs to happen for that day or week, and you should get it done without someone telling you to go do it, looking over your shoulder, and checking up on you. The Creed of the NCO says it; you are a leader of soldiers. Your primary duties are to train and take care of your soldiers’ needs.......
