a. I believe Oprah is a High Performance Leader.
b. I would consider Oprah to be a Competent Manager. She is great at building teams and definitely gets results through others. Her leadership consists of: * Carefully selecting her team-she has highly qualified people in the areas that they need to be in and in the areas she is most weak in, such as the financial area. * She gathers trusted mentors and uses them for her benefit * She rewards her staff * She values her customers and more importantly she listens to them she shows she truly cares * She stays focused on a mission or vision * She communicates her vision to her staff and she has the innate ability to motivate them * She dreams big and is constantly looking for "what's next". * She knows herself and her beliefs and abilities * She remains resilient, she is constantly changing or looking for new things she has unbelieveable ambition, drive and focus * She learns from her mistakes and then right away moves on
Reading about her employees though I would consider her to be more transactional to them than transformational, being very generous with pay and benefits. But other parts of the article stated how she praises but then right away she is on to the next new thing.

...What makes a leader? What is the outline or process as to how a person gains the characteristics of a leader? Throughout the history of America in hard times we have called on a leader. Traditionally this leader has come in the form of the president; Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and now Barrack Obama. Each of us has certain criteria of what characteristics an effective leader should possess. This would give headway in our attempt to answer the bugging question as regards what writers are. So then, why are readers said to be leaders? Who is a leader? According to John Maxwell, a renowned author on the subject of leadership, “a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”.1 Note that the first key definer of a leader in his definition is one who “knows” and an avenue to acquire this knowledge is by reading. ...What makes a great leader? There are many schools of thought and mountains of research in attempting to answer that question. Answering that particular question is a monumental task and given the scope it would be impossible for me to answer that question here. What I will do is take a look at the given scenario and determine what kinds of leader each of the 3 executives are based on the attributes and characteristics of each. With the scenario given I have determined that Executive A should be classified as a “Level 5” leader, Executive B should be classified as a Transactional leader and Executive C should be classified as a Transformational leader. Based on the information given Executive A is a true level 5 leader. ...Regardless of how we tend to view leadership, research shows that leaders do not necessarily possess any more positive traits than anyone else. Effective leaders do, however, develop and practice certain behavioral skills that contribute to their success. Rather than relying on personality traits, leaders should work to develop their relationships with followers, peers and other leaders. What Makes a Leader

...I think for anyone to be a good and successful leader they have to be on the same level as the people below them. You can’t run around big headed all the time and not take anything into consideration from other people. There is no better way to get on that level than what Daniel Goleman describes as emotional intelligence. I don’t think as a leader you can be successful without relating to people especially on an emotional level. I could personally use a little help in all of the areas described in this article. The one that stands out most to me is empathy. I tend to walk around big headed and lack compassion or empathy for other people. I think it stems from where I came from and some of the things I have gone through. Nobody every showed me this type of understanding and so I just grew up thinking like this. I tend to be tough with my kids when something goes wrong instead understanding the problem and feeling sorry for them. I have gotten better over time and I think I am improving. I think in an organizational viewpoint you have to understand people’s lives and understand that everyone is different and everyone’s home life is different. If you can’t empathize with people, than you will never get to know anyone and eventually fail as a leader. The second one that stands out most to me is the self awareness component.
