Who Is a Good Negotiator

...Who is a good negotiator? In business life, negotiations are very essential, because there are a lot of important issues in a company’s life, which have to be solved through a negotiation. A good negotiator has to have some special qualities to succeed in business life. We could learn them, or develop during our carrier. The more negotiations we can participate, the easier we can use these qualities. The most important is planning. We must prepare to a negotiation to avoid most of the surprises, and to know everything about our company. With planning we can prepare ourselves to the potential questions that we can get during a negotiation. We have to utilize the power of our market position, because if we are the market leaders, we shouldn’t finish the negotiation as the second or third one in the market. And we should be aware of our opponent’s market position as well. We also have to have practical intelligence, in order to react fast to the issues. In my opinion, clear thinking under stress in also one of the most important qualities of a negotiator. Because we should insist on our company’s best, or perhaps we have to find out new ideas, solutions of offers very quickly. As for socializing, honesty is the most important. It is a little bit interesting; because nobody is completely honest, during a negotiation, but everybody assume that his or her partner is honest. And everybody claims that about themselves. In a negotiation, verbal clarity is also important. We...

Good Leader

...A good leader is one who is able to engage members and get results. A great leader is one who listens to and empowers members to be innovative in looking beyond the present, to guide the path to strategic positioning, and places a premium on collaborative goal setting. A great leader is humble.  They really understand that their job is to focus on the goal and not on themselves.  Good leaders often compete for credit with the results in order to gain more influence or authority.   "To lead people, walk beside them ... As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate ... When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves!'" Great leaders don’t operate in a vacuum assuming that they always know best.  They know to consider input from everyone impacted by a decision in order to get buy-in from their team, stay grounded and remain objective. Although they retain final say, they’re team will stand behind the decision knowing that they’re input was wholeheartedly weighed and considered. James C. Collins loves to tell the story of Darwin E. Smith, someone most readers have probably never heard of. As Smith was ending two decades at the helm of Kimberly-Clark, maker of Kleenex and other personal-use paper products, he was asked what had driven him, what had he done to make his company so successful over time. "I was just trying to become......

Who It the Most Effective Leader?

...Title: Who is the more effective leader? Executive Summary “Leadership is a complex phenomenon involving the leader, the followers and the situation” (Hughes, Ginnett and Curphy, 2012, p3). This paper will look at two leaders, one from the corporate sector and the other from the not-for-profit sector, Gail Kelly and Ian Cox. Both have developed styles of leadership to ensure they interact with their followers within particular environments and situation. Interactional framework needs to be taking into account, rather than looking at leaders, followers or situation in isolation, as this provides a complete view of the leadership process. The interactive nature of leader-followers-situation helps understand the changing nature of the leader-follower relationship and the increasingly greater complexity of situations leaders and followers face. An analysis of Gail Kelly’s and Ian Cox’s leadership styles exposes some similarities, within vastly different situations and followers. Daniel Goleman (2000) identified six different leadership styles, authoritative, affiliative, pace-setting, democratic, coaching and coercive. Both Kelly and Cox employ different styles in their attempt to gear the followers towards attainment of a goal, objectives and the fulfillment of a vision. The organisations that Ms Kelly and Mr Cox are employed have defined their leadership. Kelly heads and organisation who main goal is to make profits for its shareholders, whereas Cox’ role is...

Characteristics of a Good Leader

...Characteristics of a Good Leader Introduction Leaders have an important role within an organisation related to its success, productivity and the performance of the employees. The ‘fundamental task of a leader is to build and maintain a high performing team’ (Furnham, 2005, p.566). However, Yukl (2013, p.18) argues that there are numerous and diverse definitions concerning the concept of a leader as well as the term leadership, although a general consensus appears to suggest it involves a process of influencing and guiding relationships within an organisation . Guirdham (2002, p.15) emphasises the importance of leaders having good interpersonal and communication skills, which as Yukl suggest involves the ability to persuade others. Yukl (2013, p.18) further states there are additional factors that contribute to good leadership such as the situational context and the use of power. Another issue regarding the characteristics of leaders is that many theories and models have been based on Western perspectives (House and Aditya, 1997, p.409) and typically based on research with white males (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, CIPD, 2008, p.7). There is some cultural crossover in servant leadership, which according to Northouse (2013, p.219), was originally proposed by Greenleaf in the 1970s, and also has origins in ancient Eastern and Western philosophies; for example, it is deeply embedded in Arab-Islamic culture (Sarayrah, 2004, p.59). A further concern is......

For example, some understand a leader simply as somebody whom people follow, or as somebody who guides or directs others, while others define leadership as "organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal”. Studies of leadership have produced theories involving traits, situational interaction, function, behavior, power, vision and values, [3] charisma, and intelligence, among others. Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to communicate and interact with other people, both individually and in groups. People who have worked on developing strong interpersonal skills are usually more successful in both their professional and personal lives. Leadership: Are Good Leaders Made or Born?

...Leadership: Are Good Leaders Made Or Born? Heather Brown Social Psychology Dr. Alyson Kohl National University Abstract Many studies have taken place to decide whether people are naturally born to lead or whether those traits are developed and taught over time. Different traits combine to make good leaders, such as ambition, intelligence, and self-confidence. In this paper I will discuss whether these traits are naturally within someone or can they be taught over time. Leadership: Are Good Leaders Made Or Born? How is a good leader defined? Are they charismatic, smart, an over achiever? A Leader, is defined as a person who is “appointed, elected, or informally chosen to direct and co-ordinate the work of others in a group”. A leader and leader-ship are two very different things. To lead you need to be able to influence groups of people socially [ (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2014) ]. Without influence, it would be hard to have people want to follow you. Leaders influence people to work together to accomplish a variety of goals. Leaders can be found in all aspects of life, at work and at play. Psychologists have conducted studies to identify what traits are common to “natural-born leaders”. Some of the common traits that great leaders have been defined in the Great Person Theory of history ( [ (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2014) ]. Ambition, intelligence, and self-confidence are just a few of traits that great leaders throughout time have had in common. ......

Qualities of a Good Leader

...Qualities of a Good Leader We determine our leaders based on their qualities and competency. Which we critically contemplate on the traits of whom we empower with such caution. So, what are some of the more crucial traits we look for in a delegate? The more valuable traits a representative can have are fairness, honesty, and confidence. Fairness may be one of the most essential traits a leader could comprise. This trait most emphasizes the means to treat all equal, and that all lives matter. Abraham Lincoln noted “These men ask for just the same thing, fairness and fairness only. This, so far as in my power, they, and all others, shall have.” Some of America’s most dignified leaders held such a trait, establishing the land of the free. Honesty is also a very valuable trait for an effective leader to poses because leaders need to be candid in order for citizens to gain their trust. Author Michael Powell notes “People look up to and want to work for a leader they trust.” This quote implies that people want a leader who won’t lie to them. A dishonest leader may often make promises he knows he can’t keep, which results in distrust and a possible impeachment. Confidence is the characteristic in which if a leader has a mindset that he is capable of being a successful dignitary he can accomplish his goals as a leader of an organization, if you don’t believe in yourself then people won’t believe in you. Elaborating on that thought, a leader with confidence who commits to what...

Is Odysseus a Good Leader in the Odyssey?

...named Odysseus and his journey home from the Trojan War and it reveals how even great leaders have their flaws. Odysseus is faced with many trials throughout his journey home to Ithaca. Although he is said to be a perfect leader, we later see that his flaws are what cause these challenges and ultimately gets in his way to get home. Odysseus is a person who likes adventure and likes to experience things first-hand, because of this he is an imperfect leader. Odysseus has his qualities, he’s a brilliant strategist and has shown that by being the one who came up with the idea to use the Trojan Horse to end the ten-year-long war. When coming back from the war, one of his first trials is against a cyclops named Polyphemus. He and his men get captured by the Cyclops and get trapped in a cave where it is blocked by a huge boulder. When Polyphemus asks for Odysseus’ name, Odysseus says “‘Nobody - that’s my name. Nobody - so my mother and father call me, all my friends,’” (223). This is a good idea not to tell they cyclops his name, it shows he's quick to think of a good plan because of him being on the spot when faced with the question. The reason why he says his name is “Nobody” is so when Odysseus attacks the Cyclops. NOBODY is attacking Polyphemus. It’s a clever trick and it would have worked if Odysseus hadn’t revealed later that “‘say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out your eye, Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca!’” (227). This was Odysseus’ biggest mistake in......

Leader Who Cast Shadow

...differences between ethical and unethical leadership, Craig Johnson uses the metaphor of casting light and shadow where leaders who cast light facilitate ethical processes and principles and leaders who cast shadow abuse power, manipulate and are deceitful. I have had an experience of being a group with a leader who cast shadow. It all occurred during my freshman year in JMU in one of my classes. The class was assigned into groups of six people and we were to pick the leader by ourselves within our group. Since no one wanted to be a leader in our group, we decided to draw lots and came up with the leader. The leaders of all the groups were responsible to submit any quizzes or assignments of their group members at the end of class throughout the semester. All the in class quizzes were to be done in groups and were to be checked by the group leaders and the leaders were responsible to submit the score of the quizzes of their group at the end of class on a card. Our group never got a 15 out of 15. The highest we had ever got was a 14. When professor posted all the grades on canvas a week before midterm, we were all surprised to see that none of our quizzes grades were lower than 14. They were all either 14 or 15. Our group leader texted in group me that the professor decided to bump all our grades because the class averages was low. That was how our group leader manipulated us to hide the fact that he changed our grades and submitted the grades we never got to the professor.......

Was Ernest Shackelton a Good Leader?

...Hilary Murray Scott C. Hammond Management 3800 8 June 2016 Was Ernest Shackleton a Good Leader? The story of Ernest Shackleton is one that defies all odds. The fated quest of the Endurance and its crew is a lesson of perseverance, intuition, social skill, and adaptability. Shackleton’s integrity was challenged before the Endurance even left port in England with the start of World War I. The captain was willing to sacrifice men and ship for the war effort after months of preparation and planning. He was a man that was searching for greatness, while keeping things simple and calm. At the core of this born leader’s personality was optimism and with generosity combined with sympathy for the crew, he made everyone feel like they were part of the team. Amidst everything working against the crew of the Endurance from being trapped in the pack ice, trying to march to the water, rowing through waters that none of us can even imagine in very small boats and being marooned on Elephant Island the crew maintained one thing. Hope. This one element dominated all the rest and was made the reality of the crew because of the realistic but optimistic expectations and vision of Ernest Shackleton. According to Robert Goffee and Gareth Jones in our readings HBR’s 10 Must Reads on Leadership, “Inspirational leaders rely heavily on their instincts...we call them good situation sensors, and by that we mean that they can collect and interpret soft data. They can sniff out the signals in...

Without the ability to communicate a leader goes on a dark long path by himself. You will never get an vision unless you grab it an put it in his or her heart. God did just that when explain to the Hebrews families how they could save the life of their first born sons. (ex 12:3-23) Attitude: My way or the highway!!!!! Pharaoh thought it did. Not only did he rule with absolute power, he also displayed his true arrogance. Pharaoh revels his arrogant character, through his defiant response to Moses request that he let his people go.
