TAUBER Are some shopping trips motivated by The results of an explora- tory study of shopper motivation suggest that a person may shop for many reasons 'T'HE field of consumer behavior has experi-•- enced a dynamic period of growth over the past 10 years. It is frequently overlooked, however, that this broad area consists of three distinct activities: shopping, buying, and consuming. Considerable progress has been achieved in identifying the behavioral dimensions of buying, and a number of theories of buying behavior have been postulated. However, less is known about the determinants of consuming and shopping which are also of substantial theoretical and managerial importance. This article attempts to encourage behavioral research and theory building concerning shopping behavior by presenting some exploratory research findings on the question of why do people shop? Numerous writings have been directed to this question. For example, researchers have suggested that shopping is a function of the nature of the product,' the degree of perceived risk inherent in the product class,^ and the level of knowledge or amount of information about alternatives.'' All of these answers are directed at the question, "Why do people shop in more than one store?"......

Why Do People Lie?

...I.- Why do people lie? Everybody lies. It may only be “white” lies, but everyone tells lies or “omits the truth” sometimes. We start lying at around age 4 to 5 when children gain an awareness of the use and power of language. This first lying is not malicious, but rather to find out, or test, what can manipulated in a child’s environment. Eventually children begin to use lying to get out of trouble or get something they want. White lies, those concocted to protect someone’s feelings, are not a big deal at all. The person, however, who seems to feel compelled to lie about both the small and large stuff has a problem. We often call these folks pathological liars (which is a description, not a diagnosis). They lie to protect themselves, look good, gain financially or socially and avoid punishment. Quite often the person who has been deceived knows that this type of liar has to a certain extent deluded him or herself and is therefore to be somewhat pitied.A much more troubling group is those who lie a lot — and knowingly — for personal gain. These people may have a diagnosis called antisocial personality disorder, also known as being a sociopath, and often get into scrapes with the law. Lying often gets worse with the passage of time. When you get away with a lie it often impels you to continue your deceptions. Also, liars often find themselves perpetrating more untruths to cover themselves. We hold different people to different standards when it comes to telling the truth. We......

Do Most People Know What's in the Food They Eat?

...Do most people know what is in the food that they eat? Very few people are aware of the dangers of consuming everyday food. Things such as chicken nuggets or hamburgers could be slowly killing someone these days. With so many things being added to foods, the human race must keep in mind the fact that said things are also being added to their bodies. Exposure to these particular additives could have a large impact on humans and more importantly, their children. Perhaps we should first take a look at exactly what is in our food. Steroid hormones are chemicals that are produced naturally in the bodies of all animals, including humans. They are chemical messages that control important body functions such as growth, development and reproduction. Our bodies produce them naturally in very small amounts to maintain a delicate balance. There are six different kinds of steroid hormones that are currently approved by FDA for use in food production in the US: Estradiol, Progesterone, Testosterone, Zeranol, Trenbolone acetate, and Melengestrol acetate. Estradiol and progesterone are natural female sex hormones; testosterone is the natural male sex hormone; Zeranol, Trenbolone acetate and Melengesterol acetate are synthetic growth promoters (hormone-like chemicals that can make animals grow faster). Ingesting steroid hormones, either natural or synthetic can upset the natural balance in the body and lead to health problems. Studies have shown increased rates of cancer due to the......

Why Do People Litter?

...Why do people litter? There are many reasons given as to why this might be. They have all sorts of excuses for littering. They can’t be bothered or are too lazy to find a bin and have no sense of pride in their community. And the worst reason they came out with this statement everybody does it! How many of these reasons or excuses have you heard? Litter is everyone’s problem, and there is never an excuse! According to Longman Dictionary, the word detrimental is causing harm or damage and littering can be defined as the waste of paper, cans, bottles, garbage and even chemicals so as to people have thrown away and left on the ground in a public place. The broadly accepted description of litter is ‘waste in the wrong place caused by human agency’. So who does the littering? Ignorant, lazy, immature, cowards are the list of people who do it in my opinion. Based to a litter statistics I have read in the net stated that most of littering occurs in transport sites, smoking areas and market sites. Chewing gum is a very constant form of litter as it sticks to the footpaths and roads and is very hard, and expensive, to remove it. And the most shocking statement is that men are tend to litter more than women and women usually use bins more than men. Even, our school children are more likely to be the culprit of littering than other people. In my point of view littering is becoming a habit among Malaysian. It has flattering an eye sore to the community and society. Far too often when......

What Made Fast Food so Popular

...What Made Fast Food So Popular In the old days people used to eat healthy home cooked meals together as a family. However things have changed, today we can see that people prefer to eat outside their home and order from fast food restaurants, and this is due to the huge increase in popularity of fast food restaurants. Today people try to save as much time as possible due to the necessity to cope with numerous tasks within a limited amount of time. In the majority of cases modern people have busy work schedules and don’t have enough time to cook a meal. The fast food industry is more popular than ever but is it because fast food restaurants made themselves popular? The American lifestyle has changed and these changes have caused the fast food industry to grow in popularity because of its convenience, it’s inexpensive and the need to eat healthy is not a priority. One of the main reasons why fast food restaurants happen to be so popular is the change in life-style. The American lifestyle has changed greatly over the last few decades, people have demanding work schedules with long hours, children come late from school so parents are left with very little time to think about what to make for dinner. It is difficult for them to divide their time between their job and their responsibilities at home like cooking or finding time to prepare their food. This is why they rather go outside to eat instead of spending time on preparing a meal. Now many families have two......

What People Do

...enjoy learning about the different systems we have on Earth and how we as students can apply and observe what we learn in class. I was first of all quite impressed with the facility and the amount of land (350 acres) that was gifted to VCU. Being one of the first buildings in Virginia to be classified, as LEED Platinum proof is very exciting. Lots of work went in to making this a green building. Being a design student, I appreciate the relationship between nature and architecture while maintaining a pleasing design aesthetic. This building uses geothermal energy, which provides efficient heating and cooling while promoting sustainable energy use. What I found most interesting was the amount of natural light the building is able to use during the day. Looking up at the ceiling of the two classrooms you were able to view the sky that is used instead of florescent lights. Water as everyone knows is most important, especially for the Rice Center. Even rainwater has a purpose, which is to be used to flush the toilets. More importantly, the vast amount of water around the center serves a purpose of learning and exploring. Because the Rice Center is located on the James River, there is easy access to boats and canoes. While I wish I was better dressed and up for the challenge, many of my fellow classmates were able to go canoeing. Nevertheless I got a chance to see up close what it is like to shock a fish in the water. One of the TA leaders, Sam, was able to show us how to shock......

Why a Western Diet Is Unhealthy and What People Should Eat to Be Healthy

...Student: Sbraletta Matosinhos, Bruno Why a western diet is unhealthy and what people should eat to be healthy In recent years, the concern for health is increasing. The main factors contributing to the declining levels of health in the Western world are a lack of physical exercise, paired with an unhealthy diet. Although this sounds like a simple problem to fix, the vast majority of people are not actually aware of the dangers of a poor diet. This essay will explain why a western diet is unhealthy and suggest ways that people can maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are several health disadvantages that a Western diet can cause. First and foremost is that the consumption of excessive calories often leads to obesity Agarwal (2008) reports that the USA has the highest daily consumption of calories per capita in the world, with 3770 calories consumed per person per day. According to Kemp, Paul and Segal (2001-10), a western diet contains a lot of sugar, which of course means more calories. To illustrate, 10 teaspoons of sugar are found in one cup of concentrated fruit juice. The typical diet in the USA has lead to sixty-five percent of people twenty years and older being obese, and this number is increasing (Agarwal 2008). Secondly, a typical Western diet is often high in unhealthy fats. Many standard Western foods such as red meat and dairy products contain a large amount of saturated fats. On top of this, processed foods such as margarines, candy and cookies are high in......

Why Do People Work

...Why do people work? That’s the single most important question in the field of management. How you answer it can tell volumes about your management style. The most common answer is: “Because they have to.” If you believe that, you are likely to favor tactics like punch clocks, close supervision and constant nagging, minimizing any opportunity for your workers to shun their work. Another common answer is: “For the money.” That one leads you to intricate financial arrangements, attempting to tie each worker’s pay to his or her output, and providing an array of monetary incentives for extra effort. But the truth is, we all know people who pour themselves into work that they don’t have to do. And we’re all familiar with the volunteer who works harder than the paid staff, or the “dollar-a-year” executive who seldom goes home to sleep. For most of us, even a modest amount of self-examination will reveal that “because we have to” or “for the money” are, at best, only partial answers to the very complex question of why we work. Gaining a better understanding of what motivates people will make you a better manager. It will help you get the most out of those who work for you. The classic text on this subject is “The Human Side of Enterprise,” published in 1960 by Douglas McGregor, a founding faculty member of MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Mr. McGregor’s book argued that behind the decisions and actions of every manager are a series of assumptions about human behavior. Most......

Modern day information assists in helping Canadians learn more about what types of food will supply the most energy to their bodies and what kind of exercise is beneficial for everyone’s lifestyle. “Why Should We Eat Healthy & Exercise?” explains why food and exercising is so important for everyone and what the gains and losses can become a part of one’s life. Importance of Exercise According to Stats Canada, the total amount of adults that are moderately active is 24 percent and only 20 percent of adults are active. More than half of the adult population (56 percent) is inactive which again, could potentially be the reason that the major causes of deaths in Canada are because of disease and cancer (Hales & Lauzon, 2008, p75).
