Dpughnuts Are Good for You

One of the most beloved foods in the United States is the doughnut or as it is popularly spelled, donut. Who invented the doughnut? Where did it come from? What is it made of? Why is it called a donut or doughnut? Why do I care?

Why? Because my beloved hubbuddy, frogdropping, challenged me to write about the history of the doughnut. So here is what I have learned from copious, painstaking research.

History of the Doughnut

To begin with, there are a number of conflicting statements about the origin of the doughnut;

It may be Chinese in origin.

But Germany, France, the Netherlands and Latin America also have valid claims.

And this was hard to believe: archaeologists have unearthed fossilized bits of what look like – would you believe, doughnuts – underneath prehistoric Native American settlements in the southwestern U.S.

Dutch olie-koecken (oily cakes)
So no matter where they originated, here is how they came to America. Back in1669, there was a Dutch recipe for “olie-koecken” (oily cakes) which closely resembles today’s doughnut. It seems that Dutch and German cooks fried the left-over sweetened dough from baking bread in oil or pork fat and made small round fry-cakes.

The Dutch also made their leftovers fancier by shaping them into decorative knots (aha! dough-knots), and rolling them in sugar after frying. I also learned that since doughnuts tended not to cook through in the middle some cooks would put nuts – walnuts or hazelnuts – in the center (aha! dough-nuts).The Puritans (Pilgrims) discovered these small, round,…...

Are You a Good Communicator?

...Are You A Good Communicator? Communication is the process of sharing one’s information to another person or a group of people whether it is one’s thoughts or his or her feelings through spoken words, written words, or body language. Effective communication requires that the transmitted information is received and understood by the receiver in the way it was intended. Interpersonal relationships are important particularly in the health care industry for teamwork and forming positive working relationships between the health care team and their patients. Trust in health care is an important interpersonal skill and the cornerstone of effective doctor-patient relationships. “The need for interpersonal trust relates to the vulnerability associated with being ill. Without trust patients may well not access services at all, let alone disclose all medically relevant information” (Rowe & Calnan, 2006, p4). Trust is also an important interpersonal element in effective healthcare team development. A supportive climate encourages open, honest, and constructive interactions among informal conversations and formal conversations. While a defensive climate leads to competitive or even destructive conflict. According to Dr. Jack Gibb, who was a distinguished psychologist and a consultant for various organizations for five decades, there are six dimensions of behavior. Each dimension has an opposite or polar end. One side of the dimension creates a defensive climate, while the......

Why You Shouldn’t Smoke

...Why You Shouldn’t Smoke There have been anti-smoking campaigns since the 1960s, and today the ads and commercials on TV are aimed more towards the youth culture—those who've not started smoking yet and might be around it—while commercials to stop the addiction to nicotine through patches and gums are geared towards the adults who've already become addicted. Not smoking is a very big issue as we can see from the proliferation of ads and commercials as well as the governmental involvement with tax-hikes on cigarettes to discourage smokers and the declaration of public places such as restaurants and shopping malls as smoke-free. There has been a stigma attached to those people who do smoke as can be witnessed by their division from the rest of the public into smoker areas. Everyone from the government to hospitals to movie stars, friends, and family claim smoking is a filthy habit one shouldn't start in on, and everyone gives very good reasons why someone shouldn't smoke, and I agree. The biggest reasons not to smoke concerns your health, the health of the people around you, the financial burden of buying cigarettes, cigars, and pipes and tobacco, and the health and beauty of the environment. One of the biggest reasons not to smoke that immediately comes to mind is health-related: "Cigarette smoking kills an estimated 264,000 men and 178,000 women in the United States each year" ("Tobacco"). Smoking has also been known to cause lung cancer, heart disease, and the chronic lung...

Why Camping Is Good for Famiies

...Why Families Should Go Camping English 090 Writing Fundamentals Professor Kathryn Whitener DeAnn Richards November 16, 2012 Revised November 27,2012 Final revision December 8, 2012 In today’s life style, with the hustle and bustle of busy families, camping can be a relaxing alternative to achieve quality family time. Most families consider quality time, to be the family sitting down to dinner together. Maybe an evening of television or video games is an idea of family time. There are actually families that consider sitting in the living room and texting each other, quality time. A weekend camping is a great way for a family to bond. Leave the video games, computers and the televisions at home. Instead, take a walk or a hike with the family. Sit around the fire at night and have smores. Tell stories and play games. If you don’t know any games, make them up. My family likes to play the Alphabet game. We start with the letter “A” and “I am going camping and I am taking “apples”. The next person has the letter “B”; “I am going camping and I am taking a bicycle and apples….and so on through the entire alphabet. Even as adults, my daughters enjoy playing this game. Most campgrounds have organized family programs to participate in. At the Ohio State Parks, there are programs such as family movie night, bug races, organized nature hikes, archery and even kids crafts. They also offer things such as putt- putt golf courses, rental bikes, basketball courts and......

College Essay - Why Do You Think We Are a Good Fit for You

...Renwick Caldwell Sam Houston University March 15th, 2013 Why Sam Houston Would Be a Great School for Me The transition from high school to college is a very stressful one. Many issues are revealed that you never had with high school. How can you afford to pay tuition? Can you afford housing? What about your location? This is why it is incredibly vital to find the best college that you think is suited for you. For me that college would be Sam Houston University. I was seriously scared about the step into college. A most confusing one at that, and I didn’t even know what I wanted to become when I get older. Honestly, it hit me hard. Responsibility is what separates these kids from going to community college, and going to a university. All of my friends want to just go to lonestar, but I don’t want to be one of those kids. I want to receive the best education I can possibly have, and this is why I want to go to Sam Houston. I want to study in computer science and become a software engineer. Checking out Sam Houston took the cake. It’s close to home, it has a computer science program, and a great one at that, and I could learn a lot more in the 4 years at Sam Houston rather than the 2 years at lonestar. I want to get a head start on my career. I want to succeed as far as I can and I believe that Sam Houston would help me on my road to success. The location is also a plus since it is only about forty minutes from my parent’s house, therefore making me feel a lot more safe......

Why Don't You Dance?

...How Raymond Carver’s “Why Don’t You Dance?” came to life on screen Dan Rush’s Everything Must Go is about a successful businessman whose life ambitions get demolished by a midlife crisis due to his addiction of alcohol. On a business trip nick relapses and ends up sleeping with one of his co-workers. The consequences of his relapse result in the termination of his employment and his wife leaving him. Nick goes home to find the locks changed and all his possessions on the lawn. Disgusted by the situation, Nick sits down on the couch in his front yard and drinks a case of beer. His life is now on display for his whole neighborhood to see. Raymond Carver’s “Why Don’t You Dance?” does not accurately describe why Nick is living on his front lawn, because he is still allowed access to his home. The film and story both have Nick living on his front lawn, although the story supports the theme of having your life on public display. In Rush’s film, he enhances the setting, characters, and plot from Raymond Carver’s short story “Why Don’t You Dance?” to support the theme of living a life full of regret and that nobody is perfect. The setting of Dan Rush’s Everything Must Go sets the mood for the viewers through the eyes of Nick Halsey. Nick sits in his car after getting fired and reminisces through flashbacks of the occurrence in his mind. While nick’s appearance is cliché, his emotions are becoming unveiled on camera by Rush’s ability to bring out his thoughts. Close up’s...

Coconut Oil: Why It Is Good for You

...Coconut Oil: Why it is Good For You In this article, fats and oils are used interchangeably but in a strict sense, oil usually means liquid at room temperature and fat usually means solid at room temperature. However, coconut oil is solid at temperatures under 76 degrees F. So if you live at temperatures of 76 degrees F or more, coconut oil is liquid; if less than 76 degrees F, coconut oil is a fat. Saturated fat – one that has a small degree of unsaturation or double bonds and tends to be more solid at room temperatures lower than 76 degrees F. Example: butter, coconut oil. Monounsaturated oil – Contains some saturated fat but is largely oleic acid, a mono-unsaturated oil, which contains only one double bond. Example: Olive oil. Polyunsaturated oils – poly means many, so this means that the fat has more than one double bond. Example: linoleic (omega-6) acid has two double bonds; alpha-linolenic (omega-3) acid has three double bonds; arachidonic acid has four double bonds. The following information comes from the research of Ray Peat, Ph.D. and Mary G. Enig, Ph.D. References are given where applicable. I recommend only three types of fats to my clients: extra virgin olive oil, organic or, preferably raw butter, and organic coconut oil. Most people understand the first two but cringe at the thought of eating coconut oil. Here’s why I recommend coconut oil to everyone. Coconut oil has been used as cooking oil for thousands of years. Popular cookbooks......

Why Investing in Stocks Is Good

...You might have heard about people talking about buying and selling stocks, and I'm here to tell you what they are and why you should invest in stocks. First of all, you might be wondering what are stocks? A stock is an equity investment, ownership in a company. For a corporation, equity capital (money that a business gets from its owners) is provided by stockholders who buy shares of its stocks. Since the stockholders have a stake in the company, they also share in the triumph of the company. When the company has a great year, that means that your stocks will increase too which is how you make money with stocks. Another way to make money, is by getting paid dividends. A dividend is given money, stock or other property that a company pays to stockholders. The dividends are paid out of earnings which is why a stockholder would share in the triumph of the company too. One thing to note, is that a company is not required to pay out dividends. When a company has a bad year, its board of director's may choose not to give out dividends and instead use that money to cover some of the expenses for that year. A company may also keep some of the earnings to help pay for expansion, research, and product development. So, if the company has a bad year that means that their stock value well go down in price and if you own some of their stock you could start to lose money. Here's an example on how you might buy and sell stock, say you buy stock, now you should've have done some research......

Why Can't We Be Good?

...PHI 106 Assignment #1 Why Can’t We Be Good? “Our society simply has no generally acceptable solution to the ethical dilemma of abortion. So here is a test for us. This is ethnics. We are in front of a painful and Momentous question of right and wrong. How shall we try to think - to think, and not just wrangle - about it?”(“Why Can’t We Be Good?”, pg.63) I believe that everyone has an opinion about a certain situation whether it’d be right or wrong. Giving an opinion about a certain subject brings out the emotions that a person feels. Morality is another word for someone’s opinion about what is right or wrong and it goes back to what a person feels. For instance, many people discuss abortion and whether the solution harms the fetus or not, no one is sure. My opinion about abortion is that it is a form of murdering and lessens the value of human life and can cause long term damage to women or health risk. People who are pro-life consider abortions to be inhumane and believe they should be outlawed. As, viewed by people who categorize themselves as pro-life, it is seen as the murder of an innocent life. Plus, abortion lessens the chance for adoption if the child is born and sadly women that choose abortion usually do not have the financial resources to support the child. There are also, other safer forms of birth control. But I also, believe that in any situation if a woman is raped or abused, she should have the rights to do an abortion is that is the......

Why Finance Is Good for Us

...the bay, back and forth they went. As we filmed, a group of young Russian-speakers came to remonstrate. "This is normal," they said. "We want the Russians. You are telling the world lies. They are not occupiers." Soviet history and glory Russia says it is a legitimate cause to defend the rights of people like this who look east rather than west. And probably they are the majority in Crimea though no doubt there are significant minorities, such as the Tatar community, who do not want to be annexed, who do not want to be part of the Russian Federation. At the same time the Kremlin, of course, aims to defend its strategic interests. Would the Americans be any different? It is their access to the Black Sea, not to mention a land synonymous with Soviet history and glory. On the east coast of the peninsula, in Kerch, the Russians are now strengthening their forces. The ferry terminal has been taken. Perhaps more hardware will be moved across the straits. Yesterday the Russian Prime Minister, Dmitri Medvedev, said his government would build a bridge from Russia to Kerch. It reinforces the Kremlin's desire to be ever attached to Crimea. Why finance is good for us A new call to arms Finance and the Good Society. SINCE the September 2008 meltdown plunged much of the global economy into deep recession, no one has had a good word to say about finance or financial innovation. Adair Turner, Britain's leading financial regulator, has given well-received speeches questioning......

Why Globalization Is Good for Business

...The Good Side of Globalization Christopher Schemers PHL/320 March 30,2015 John Preis Globalization in Business In the last twenty-five years, the world has seen a good side of globalization. For the last four of those twenty-five years, the business world has seen a bad side of globalization("Forbes.com", 2011). There is also an ugly side to globalization, and organizations hope and pray that they will never have to experience it. The ugly side of globalization being when nations and communities try to escape the brutal cycle of income and employment declines through coetaneous currency devaluations. Globalization is Good The Industrial Revolution began a rise of global inequalities causing a select amount of countries to experience a much rapider economic growth than the rest of the world. This growth gave a small handful of countries an advantage over the remainder of the business community, until the beginning of the globalization era("Worldbank.org/", 2014). Advances in transportation and telecommunications infrastructure, including the rise of the telegraph and its successor, the Internet. A phenomenon is now in effect, with some of the poorest countries having emerged and turned into global engines of growth.  A globalized corporation offers a complex web of forces and elements that bring people, markets, and practices into an increasingly greater juxtaposition("Debate.org", 2015). The integration and interrelationships of indigenous and...

Why Are You a Primate

...Dania Pulido Mary Kennedy Human Origins Anthropology 102 September, 24 2015 Why are you a Primate? Humans are Primates. We share more DNA with monkeys than other mammals. Primates have excellent visions. I have forward-facing eyes that sit close together. By it being shaped this way it allows me judge the distance of objects their size and height and to see things in three dimension. This lets me see how far a soccer ball it is its hight and size and at what pace the soccer ball is coming at me. My eyes are both able to look at things from different angles but bring together one image. Depth perception is important because it keeps me from bumping into things and being able to tell at what pace things are coming at. A major thing that helps me do everything in my every day life is being dexterous because having a power grip and being bipedalism helps in being able to hold things and to use them as tool for example being able to write is given to the power grip. Bipedalism gives me the availability to stand up right and walk on two feet being able to play sports is one example. Another one would be my teeth it allows me to eat food by using my canines that are much smaller than other mammals this allows be to be able to chew my food better and I am able to eat a variety of food not just one specific category. Every primate mammal has a parental investment it is not all the same but with me my parents growing up teach me from right and wrong I grow up doing what they...

...Good morning. I’m going to start out by asking you this. How many of you eat breakfast everyday? Well did you know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Many people skip this meal and in fact, it is shown that less than 40 percent of Americans eat breakfast every day. Most people have very busy schedules leaving them with little time to eat breakfast. However, you should try your best to eat a nutritious meal before you start your day. There are a number of reasons to why you should eat breakfast. I’m going to tell you about 5 of those. The first reason why breakfast is so important is because its gives you an energy boost to start your day. What our bodies need in the morning is a meal that includes each of the three macronutrients: protein, good fats and complex carbohydrates. Protein’s role is to provide sustainable energy. It takes longer to digest than carbohydrates, so it will hold you over until lunchtime. A good protein breakfast would be eggs. Fats are equally important, as long as you stick to good fats like olive oil. Use olive oil in the pan when you make eggs. Complex carbohydrates provide glucose, our body’s main source of energy. Glucose is the brain’s sole source of energy. That’s where you get your sharp attitude and quick wit. Also, our muscles lean on glucose for sustained energy. Good sources of complex carbs are whole-grain bread, waffles or cereal. The second reason why you should eat breakfast is because it makes you smarter. You are......

... ARE YOU A GOOD COMMUNICATOR How do you know if you have effective communication? To have effective communication you have to have an understanding of ones ideas. Another good way to know if you have effective communication is observations among people. Communication is a two way exchange that must involve both a presenter and a audience. It is important to have good quality interpersonal relations particularly in the health care industry because when you are in health care, you are talking to multiple people. When you are in health care, you are always interacting with other departments, nurses, office personal and patients. A good example of defensive relationship would be where you are talking with medical personal and you tell them about a bill that was paid and they have zero records of the bill ever being paid. Now when this happens, you will get defensive......
