The Problem with the Younger Generation Today

Good afternoon, my name is Randy Daniels and I am pleased to have the opportunity this afternoon to give my thoughts on a subject that anyone over the age of 30 has an opinion on - that is the younger generation and their associated faults.

My view of this so called problem is that there is really no problem at all; it is simply generational bias at work. Every generation thinks the next generation is lacking in some basic knowledge or skill that is vitally important to the continuation of the human race. Often, however, we find out that in time that skill, ability or knowledge will surface or were totally unnecessary in the first place.

First, please understand that by “young people” I am not referring to anyone under the age of 17. These teens live in a sub-culture that no one over that age understands. There is good reason why retail shopping malls have imposed a ban on these so called young shoppers unless they are accompanied by an adult. Many of the young people I see today can solve problems and the solution is almost always correct. They just go at it differently. While my generation, my parents generation and those before might work out several possibilities and try to devise the best solution, the young people of today use Google and instantly have the opinion of several experts. Ask yourself this question; if we had had computers in our day wouldn’t we be doing the same thing? In other words, why do long division when you can do new math?

Our frustration with young people seems to be from their lack of concern or knowledge about routine day to day things. My nieces have never seen a dial phone, an ice cube tray and they certainly do not know how to work a manual can opener. They do not even know what an ironing board is. Generation Me

...Angelo Yatco 1301-S07 November 18, 2012 Generation Me In Generation Me, a comprehensive look into the current generation’s attitude towards the self, the differences from previous generations, and the overall effects of current social forces on the individual, Jean Twenge makes many observations on controversial topics. Though making many wild claims, we can only agree with the staggering amount of research and evidence she presents. Twenge begins her book with a chapter titled “You Don’t Need Their Approval: The Decline of Social Rules”. In this chapter, she explores the idea that the society of Generation Me, quantified as individuals born in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, is becoming less and less formal. It is apparent that the social norms of our generation compared to those of the previous (Baby Boomers) seem to be very lax. As traditional values such as clothed appearance and other forms of outward image seem to be less significant, Twenge looks into the reason of such a change in attitude. Generation Me is said to have learned tolerance as a standard; because of this, appearance and behavioral changes are seen to be more outlandish than in the past. Moving from the typical “white picket fence neighborhoods” that stood for a conformist mentality, young adults now are geared towards acceptance for individual expression. Internet Generation

...The Internet Generation For most of my life I have been fortunate enough to be able to interact with computers and the internet. Although this is a good thing for me, it doesn’t blind me to the fact that there are some people who just don’t understand the concepts of a computer and the internet. The "computer generation" is not just for one generation. The elderly don't have to sit back and watch while the younger generations have fun banking, playing, shopping and socializing online. But many elderly people shy away from computers out of fear, wondering "What if I break it?" or "What if someone steals all my personal information?" The concern over the growing “digital divide” has led to a number of initiatives being employed to encourage web usage for the older generations, and to ensure they are not excluded from the digital world. Among these is educating the elderly on ways computers may benefit their lives. Some computer manufacturers have designed computers especially for elderly users. The designs acknowledge seniors' limitations on a computer, attempting to make a comfortable user for them. For instance, the designs tend to emphasize simplicity and straightforward commands and prompts. Keyboards are less cluttered with keys, and the software lacks design complications. Generation Me

...attachment to duty or to group cohesion which is clearly highlighted throughout “Generation Me”. “Generation Me” discusses the attitudes and societal views of the younger generation; there has been a major shift in thoughts throughout the past decades of generations. This change of thought among the various generations is seen through the attitudes, political views, and social awareness of individuals within each group. Family traditions as well as cultural values do not hold nearly as much importance as they have in past generations. Younger generations are concerned more about their personal commitments and their own life rather than belonging to a larger group. Entitlement in the Younger Generations

...Entitlement is the greatest problem facing today’s generation and should be fixed by educating parents of the importance of giving criticism to their children and teaching the children greater responsibility and good work habits that may influence their decisions later on in their lives. Major disputes of today’s generation are laziness, disrespectfulness, and self entitlement. Laziness is the quality of being disobliging to work or use energy. Welfare was designed to be for the people who are unemployed because of a major injury, people that cannot find a profession, and people that cannot foster themselves or their family. ...The Stolen Generations The term “Stolen Generations” is used for the Children of Australian aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, most of the children were under 5 years old, who were taken from their parents by the Australian government and Church. They were separated from their parents and lived in dormitories or with foster parents. It is referred to “stolen generations” because it happened for many decades and several generations were affected. It is believed that these forcibly removals happened from around 1900s until 1970s. ...Debt and the Generations Summary As the UK faces a difficult economic period, many families and households are suffering financially. 65% of all debt belongs to households aged between 35 and 54, and within this age bracket 35-44 year olds hold a staggering 37% of this debt. This demonstrates the rise in debt hitting its peak between people’s mid-30s and mid-40s, however research has shown this is changing; younger consumers are now more likely to be less financially aware. This has resulted in around 75% of people aged 18-39 having unsecured debts, and becoming increasingly reliant on credit in order to meet financial commitments - 19% of 18-24 year olds are “very or fairly likely to borrow in the next 3 months”. Not only do younger generations have difficulty in getting onto the housing ladder, with 84% of first time buyers under 30 having to turn to financial assistance in order to buy, but many of the younger generation (almost 3.2 million) also have student loans that must be repaid. Both of these are factors resulting in a reduction in available income, meaning younger and future generations will have less money to save and invest, potentially reducing their quality of life during retirement. Every generation has similarities and differences from the one before, and the one after their time. The people living through that time determines if they will be known for something great. In August of 2011 I was able to attend training for supervisors and managers that showed them the difference in the generations in the workforce. This was the first part of a three part training that we will be required to attend. For the first time in the history of the U.S. there are four different generations in the workforce. The autocratic management style is considered the classical approach to management. With this style managers try to have and keep the authority and decision making themselves without depending on other workers. During the past 30 years this style of management has been criticized do to the higher turnover rate in organizations. These type of managers want things done their way with no questions asked, and do not want to listen to anyone, it is either their way or no way.
